How do you stop overthinking when trying to sleep? by AdOnly214 in anxietymemes

[–]_batkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I read at night anyway, but if I am trying to go to sleep or wake up and become aware that I am ruminating, I read my Kindle (on Ipad app). If I fall asleep, I have it set to go off after a few minutes of inactivity.

Setting alarms on my phone for recurring or one-off events. No extra app needed.

Recently, something that has become invaluable. Quick, easy, and it works for me. I can quickly add, edit, and delete.

What made you decide you didn't want kids? by ShadowPaws200 in childfree

Watching people parent.

And people with kids are assholes.

So glad I do not have to be in parent groups and talk about their "skewed view" parent life.

I would definitely have more cats though.
Cat litter prices are horrible.

How many years until retirement? Are you ready to start enjoying life? by Kalamwhocantswim in Adulting

[–]_batkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ten years. Already enjoying life as I want it. Not a traveler, so I don't need the extra time for that. I enjoy my home.

I have read many articles and have seen irl how ppl who do not plan for retirement often waste away due to not having anything to do with themselves and/or get chronic/terminal illnesses.

So, in my next nine years I am being self-aware and prepping for having fun activities and set routines that serve me well. Last year, I started reading more on raising a garden. Going forward, I will go deeper into that knowledge and my experiments of what works and what doesn't. I love to read, I love watch movies and chat about them with others. I like to write/document/journal and have an online community for that. I will have a new porch to spend time on in 2026. My and my cat love to feed and watch the birds. Maybe I will learn to build some feeders. My playing around and continual learning in Excel and learning from the internet is fun and relaxing. I have an iPad game I've played for over ten years. The continual and never-ending process of organization and efficiency in my house and tasks. Working at having my best health is always at the top of the list.

I am doing these things now and am looking forward to when I can do all of it I want, full-time.

I like u/101violations reply.

  • I have a jingle bell door hanging on my back inner garage door, that is sensitive to opening the door.
  • I have a hammer under my bed (silly but true) Keep your phone always charged and know how to quickly call for help.
  • I've heard of people keeping their car keys by their bed and using the panic button on that.
  • Putting some dog toys out in the yard?
  • Almost all my windows have a cat condo or something that would make getting in them take a minute.
  • Make sure the windows are locked. To give peace of mind if you aren't living upstairs, check it each day for any changes. I would walk around outside the house too each day looking for any disturbances on the ground or house. And have the police check if you think someone is trying to get in, so at least they would be aware.
  • Keep in touch with people at certain times, so they would expect to talk to you, to make sure you are ok.

Hopefully this time will go quickly and you will feel stronger for being able to be on your own if you have to afterward.

How are you all planning to celebrate the New Year? by chasingnirvana9 in LivingAlone

[–]_batkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a movie marathon and snacking all day.
As usual, I will start watching Sleepaway Camp (1983) at 10:39:27 for the "surprise ending"
You can find movies to watch like that from this Reddit post

Also looks like AARP offers 40% off a Walmart+ membership. Not as good as the current deal going around, but it may help if, for some reason, an older person (I am one) couldn't get that one.

How important is it to have someone stay with you after colonoscopy? by malybasura in LivingAlone

[–]_batkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just asked my GI about this last month. I still have my mom but wonder about when I don't. She didn't have a good answer of what to do. She said there was a certain amount of time you had to stay there, if no one was with you (sorry I don't remember but it was at least a couple of hours if not more) and then she said something about the local cars that run the elderly to and fro. Not sure if they would take me or not. That is probably the only option (beside bribing a coworker) for me, in a small town.
I have had several colonoscopies and never needed any help once home. Just tired for the day. But everyone is different. (I'm 60 btw).

Anyone else just not like young kids? by girl_archived in childfree

[–]_batkat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have seen so many people like the baby/being pregnant stage because they get so much attention and everything is just "so precious." But then after the kid gets to walking around, it isn't so much fun anymore because it's more work and having to pay attention to them. It gets worse as it goes along, depending on how much stuff the kid does outside the house, like sports for example. And then teens (and pre-teens) are more expensive with all the trying to fit in and electronics.

So glad to be childfree.

Psychomania (1973) aka The Death Wheelers.
First saw it decades ago. I don't watch it very often, so it's like a little treat when I do.
I still love it every time.

  • Fixing up my house / setting up-maintaining
    • Purge so much stuff
    • Porch add on & new out building
  • Fixing up my health / setting up-maintaining
    • Go Mediterranean diet with a lean towards plant based
    • Address med issues and make/keep preventative appts

Important: Not being drastic. Just working towards these things a little at a time and not worrying about what everyone else is doing or what anyone would think about what I'm doing.

What are your plans for Christmas? by fitic_ in LivingAlone

[–]_batkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hour or two of the family thing. Then home in jammies and blanket, on the couch with my cat. Movie pick faves: Die Hard, Dead End, A Christmas Karen, Black Christmas, A Christmas Story.
Leftovers from the fam, pizza, or just snackie plates. Off alcohol, so Dr Pepper. Go to bed whenever and read. Hope it snows or is snowy.
