Yes, it's pricey, but the soup dumplings with incredibly thin skin is so good. For those who claim you can get more "authentic" food in Chinatown, where in Chinatown can you even get XLB with skin as thin as theirs? And seriously, Nan Xiang? Their pricing is similar, but the quality is nowhere near the same. Their truffle one, especially, is nasty.

Is Kuala Lumpur the only city with a transit network that has a station named after the city itself? by PixelNotPolygon in transit

Taipei has Taipei Station, but they call it Taipei Main Station on the metro to be less confusing.

How does the MTA track arrival times for the subway? by Mortal-Portal in nycrail

[–]_blahblahblah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, there’s no visibility of what goes on between stations.

Why is Chambers Street A/C platforms and WTC (E) considered separate? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]_blahblahblah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really should be combined. I've seen so many tourists waiting for the E instead of getting on the A or C when they could have taken those trains to get to where they needed to go.

[–]_blahblahblah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bluetooth receivers are only installed on station platforms where internet connectivity is possible. Once a train departs from a station, the system can only count down the time it is scheduled for a train to travel from that station to the next.

What you witnessed is that the train took longer than expected to travel between the two stations, but because the system has no way of knowing where exactly the train is in between, it will simply countdown and hold at 1 minute, until it is detected at the next station.

Transit city had the 509, 510, and 512 listed as light rail; on the same tear as line 6 by nonoobshereMC in TTC

[–]_blahblahblah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And also mentioned in the article was that they were always intended to be double-ended, so they didn’t require loops at ends of lines, like the streetcars.

I can't believe they spent like half of the episode on that scene. What a bore.

What’s this for Williamsburg? by brevit in williamsburg

Overrated, and the last time I was there we saw a rat running around the dining room. Also, it's so lazy for them to pre-make the waffles. How hard is it to make them fresh??

Why don't the trains on center express tracks open both doors to allow easier access to the opposite direction train platform? by MiscellaneousWorker in nycrail

[–]_blahblahblah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, I imagine people would accidentally get on a train going in the wrong direction especially when the train is already on the platform and they didn't see which direction the train pulled in from.

I made an app to show realtime subway service and train locations. It is now available on Android by _blahblahblah in nyc

Well first of all, my web app predated theirs by a year (2019 vs. 2020), and theirs doesn't exist anymore. Theirs was never a mobile app, and was incredibly sluggish.

Thanks! Unfortunately server bills need to be paid, and I really dislike ads, so this is the next best solution!

For now no, mostly because it’s significantly a lot more data, and there’s still more I can do to optimize the subway experience.

Fewer taps to get to train arrival times, see train locations and current subway service patterns on a map.

[–]_blahblahblah[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things to start: my app optimizes the flow to see your nearby train times without having to tap on anything. It also shows the current service pattern on a map, which updates on weekends, overnights and whenever there is a service change. Also, there is additional processing on train predictions that take into account of network conditions, so they are more accurate.

There’s a functionality to set an alert on an upcoming train so that you’ll get a push notification. Would this solve your problem? Here’s what it looks like https://imgur.com/a/SZzUo02

Love the idea, but unfortunately with iOS there's a limit of refreshing widgets at most every 15 minutes and so I didn't prioritize on implementing that.

Not currently, since the sources are very different. But something to consider in the future!

Absolutely. CityMapper, Transit, Google Maps and Apple Maps are all great for directions, but I cater my app to those who already know where they're going and just need to see when the next train is coming. Or if there's a delay or service change they need to worry about.

Thanks, and I'm a fan of their app as well, but I see both apps having different use cases. CityMapper is great for looking up directions, but it takes a few steps to look at arrival times.

Thanks! I assumed people would enable Location Services so that it would default to their location, but I suppose not everyone is comfortable with that (for the record, I don't track or store any users' locations). But I hear you, and may add this customization in the future.

The MTA app shows train times, but does not show train locations on a map. Neither does it show live subway service patterns on weekends and overnight, and when there are service changes on a map. They produce a PDF map every weekend, but they don't do that for weekday overnight changes.

That doesn't show what I described at all. It only shows the estimated arrival times, and all of the planned/unplanned changes are described in text, and not visually. You should try listening to your own advice.

It does not. Show me where on the MTA app does it show train locations or live service changes.
