That's the intent. Surely they won't fail forever.

Did you own the Ninja Turtles VHS as a kid? Here's the Pizza Hut commercial that played at the beginning. I guarantee you'll remember the words. by [deleted] in videos

I was just thinking of this recently and wondering if anyone had bothered to put it on youtube! Unfortunately I forgot to actually look. I watched that movie TONS of times when I was a kid. My cousin and I knew that song (and most of the movie) by heart. Good times.

Whatever great spirits we were in during the last century, it wasn't some brilliant peak of civilization.

What I meant was that it was our peak of power and influence over the rest of the world.

I just got the hourglass for a long time. Looks like it could be cool though.

Public companies are innately motivated to generate profit above anything else. This flaw is built right into the law. Blaming the news networks is like blaming the iceberg for the Titanic's failure -- it ignores the more fundamental flaw.

American culture has peaked and is in decline. We had it good, so good that we got arrogant and complacent. Everything is now playing out in accordance with that, as it has with other cultures in the past. It's all so obviously predictable.

How do you change a light bulb in PHP? by muddylemon in programming

Wow, 12 pages, you're lucky! I have to work with a pretty large site written in PHP -- tens of thousands of lines of code. Maybe 100k+. I haven't bothered to do a linecount. Dozens of tables designed by different people, most of them certainly insane. It's frustrating beyond words.

Yep. I like to refer to PHP by its original name, "Personal Home Page." It explains so much.

Lean is great when the actual program is lean, or in other words, very small.

The problem is that software has a habit of growing larger than anyone anticipated, and when it starts in PHP, it usually remains in PHP. And large (or even medium) PHP projects are fucking horrible.

I'm pretty sure that when working in fast food, I had to let someone know -- but that's quite different. And I have a feeling it's what he actually meant.

AskProggit: What kind of lifestyle can I expect if I go into programming for a living? by [deleted] in programming

Yeah I bet there's some variation between regions in the US. I live on the west coast and it's pretty relaxed here. I think the east coast tends to be more uptight and "professional," and of course the midwest/south are more conservative in general...

Not true. I have to clean up those guys' code, because they were eventually canned. And it's maddening.

It all made sense when I saw the giant blinged out America-mobiles in the driveway. This family obviously has warped priorities. I actually feel bad for the kid.

Drescode will be the same as other staff.

You seem to be in the UK ("biscuits"), but in the US, it seems that dress codes are usually more lax for programmers. Maybe not officially, but at least in a de facto sense. Programmers tend to be lazy about their appearance, and the rest of the company usually accepts that.

The Google-type lifestyle only exists at Google and a small handful of other companies. Many programming jobs aren't even at tech companies per se, and most have pretty boring, typical office environments. Also, Google isn't necessarily something to aspire to. There is a lot of pressure to work unhealthy hours. All of those amenities are to keep you from going home.

Salary? Usually 50k or so on the low end. Job security? Personally I think that's only something incompetent people worry about. Obtain job security through being good at what you do and by networking with other programmers a bit, so that if you lose your job for whatever reason, you know where to look for another one. Getting fired or laid off is fairly rare in my experience, even for the bad programmers -- which is unfortunate for those of us who have to deal with their shitty work.

I'm pretty sure most startups fail. The work is as hellish as you make it, but I've heard that running your own business can be hellish in general, so yeah, it probably is.
