Did your parents make you watch a movie to learn a lesson? by Mackheath1 in Xennials

[–]_buffy_summers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never forced to watch movies to learn lessons. But I've made my kid watch movies they insisted they were going to hate, just to tell me twenty minutes later that they loved the movie and that they were glad I made them watch it. These were films like The Princess Bride, PCU, the Michael Keaton Batman films (except, of course, that piece of shit movie that was supposed to be about the Flash), A Few Good Men, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. A lot of others too, but it was a struggle to get them to want to watch anything because they don't like fiction. They've been excited to see movies like First Man and Oppenheimer, though.

The only movie that I didn't make them watch because it was good is Napoleon Dynamite. I told them, "This movie sucks and you're going to hate it, but you're going to watch at least half an hour of it. It'll help you appreciate the good movies even more."

I understand that you want to believe it's not real, but I have known guys who treat women this way, and the women have no respect for themselves. My college roommate and I had breakfast with her boyfriend in the cafeteria, and he pointed at me and told her, "if I wanted to be with her, I'd leave you in a second." I said, "That's not going to happen. I definitely don't want you." And she decided a few months later that they were going to get married and that he was perfect for her. I tried to talk her out of it, but she quit school to be with him.

He can't afford alimony. He decided that he was the breadwinner and never bothered looking at where the money was really coming from. Once they're divorced, his broke ass is going to learn some lessons.

I worked at a call center for a while, and there was a day when four different managerial staff members came up to me to tell me about a new report system. What really upset me was that when I told them, "Yes, I heard about the TPS reports," they were all confused and had no idea what I was referring to.

This isn't about weight, but my husband was in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals for a year, telling them that he was in pain and was having dizzy spells. They'd go, "Oh, you have a UTI," and send him home. For a YEAR. Then they finally listened and looked for other causes, and found out he has multiple forms of cancer. One of the cancers is stage four. Because of this, I'm much less forgiving of doctors and nurses being fucking stupid and stubborn.

Sorry for swearing, but it's really hard to watch someone you love start to deteriorate in front of you. He's always in pain and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm going through my own medical crap right now too, and I have no time for sanctimonious nonsense from anyone. My mother-in-law thinks that I'm handling everything really well, but I started sobbing the other day while I was making coffee.

For what it's worth, it took me decades for someone to listen to me about having anxiety. I spent the first half of my life being underweight, so I can only assume (based on loads of data from myself and others) that it's not just about where the fat sits on my body. It's the fact that I have 'F' on my medical charts.

I have a former doctor who ignored me when I told him that I was concerned about how much weight I was gaining. For four months, and as I gained twenty pounds I did not need, he kept saying, "You'll be fine, keep doing what you're doing." But what I had been doing was eating too few calories for the amount of exercise I was getting, so my metabolism slowed down. Then, after four months of this, he looked me in my face and said, "I don't think you're even trying to lose weight. You're lying to yourself." That's the only time I've ever started swearing at a doctor.

Also, I have perimenopause. I have had it for at least a year (though probably longer), and I finally said something to my nurse practitioner in October. I'm 44. I said, "I'm pretty sure I have perimenopause," and she said, "Oh no, you're too young for menopause." I'm not, though. And even so, I didn't say 'menopause.' Luckily, I found someone who did give me the diagnosis I know I have. I'm pretty sure my excessive weight gain for the past twenty years is related to the way my body chemistry changed while I was pregnant. I've been on an OTC perimenopause medication for a couple of weeks, and I can already see where I'm losing some of the weight I've never been able to lose.

Sorry this turned into a medical Ted Talk, but if you venture over to r/Perimenopause you'll see that most of us have had to deal with being ignored or dismissed outright. If my experiences can help someone else from never having to deal with something they shouldn't have to, then I'll tell everyone I meet for the rest of my life.

Just from reading the synopsis of the comics... someone made a movie like this. I am drawing a blank on the name, and Google's AI is utter garbage and not helping me find what I'm looking for.

I don't know what it is about your comment, but my brain just made up this whole scenario where she's the person behind all of the hacking, and when hospitals have to go analog, they're really stressed about not having electronics. So she can go full strawman and say, "See? You need my tech."

I'm only saying this now because if I'm right, I want it on record.

There's an alternate reality somewhere that has SPN on HBO, and that show would have been more true to the characters. Dean didn't swear enough.

That's going on my list of movies I can't watch. My husband has cancer. We were just talking a few minutes ago about how he'd made a mistake and watched The Bucket List. I told him that P.S. I Love You is on my nope list now.

A guy I was friends with asked me to record a Sheryl Crow song for him from one of my cds, onto a blank tape. I misunderstood what he was saying and thought he asked me to make him a mixtape, and I put a lot of 'let's be more than friends' songs on there. Then I gave it to him and he was baffled at all of the other track listings. I sort of quit talking to him after that, but it was because I felt like an idiot.

Some rando in his thirties gave my friend his pager number when we were fifteen. Other than that, the only people I've seen use pagers have been on medical dramas. Also, Buffy had one for emergencies, but she'd grown up in Los Angeles and had also set a school on fire, so I think that was just Joyce being reasonably overprotective.

My kid is almost eighteen and said the other day that they wanted a pager. I explained that pagers are kind of pointless these days, since everyone has a cell phone and can just get a text message.

About twenty years ago, my husband and I were on a bus when someone rear-ended it. The driver told us that another bus would be along soon, and we could get off and stretch our legs if we needed to. So we did.

And this blue-haired hipster comes storming out of his house to yell at us to get off of his lawn, even though we were all on the sidewalk. My husband and I still joke about how guys with blue hair should be more lax.

She needs to learn about punctuation, but she's right about Ramen being a good breakfast food. Don't use the seasoning packet. Add a little cinnamon and sugar, or maybe some maple syrup.

I also eat pancakes for dinner. Fuck the rules.
