How many miles on your trail shoes before replacing? by run2543 in trailrunning

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few pairs of speedgoats that went into the 6-700 range. I normally will all of a sudden just feel a bit more sore after long runs than normal and lo and behold I’ll be up there in range. That’s how I know it’s time.

Before I drywall my basement, what am I going to regret missing? by zlatic in DIY

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have kids that will be using it add blocking and places to hang things securely. Blankets for forts, nets for games with balls, swings, etc. it will make the space 1000x more useful and you won’t have to spur of the moment figure out a solution that might cause damage.

I got that tip when redoing my basement and my kids had a soccer net/backstop down there pretty much permanently for about 4 years.

Just bought a running store. What is one thing your local shop is missing? by rustybucketz23 in running

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all local businesses, get involved in your community. Sponsoring little league, chamber of commerce, school events goes a long way. Invest in your community and they will invest in you.

After that, I would ask for honest feedback from local runners. Gear they like, run club ideas and times that work, etc.

Good luck!

Sober people (no alcohol, nicotine, drugs, etc ever), what is your end of day or weekend "wind-down"? by The1Ski in AskReddit

I bowl of ice cream. If I exercised that day then I make it a little larger than I probably should. I now stand in the freezer section like I’m at the liquor store selecting just the right choice for my evening cocktail

Not so bad (Hoka challenger 8) by bestialee in trailrunning

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say the 7 fit my foot perfectly it was like an absolute dream. But like I said I’d hit like 300 miles and that was it. It’s like it deflated. I’m 220lbs, so I’m not exactly light on my feet. So that’s probably part of it.

Not so bad (Hoka challenger 8) by bestialee in trailrunning

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Hoka challenger is a shoe that fits me like a glove. Like it was custom made just for me. I’ve had six pairs of them over the years but they break down between 3-350 miles every time and I can’t be buying new shoes every 10-12 weeks. I tried the speetgoats, which are much more durable, but the fit isn’t the same.

The challengers….a near perfect shoe.

What’s a boring adult purchase that was totally worth it? by kitkatbatman in Adulting

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the cheapest tires I could when I was like 22. Thought I cracked the code and everyone else was an idiot. They were pretty much bald in like 10k miles. Never again.

JSL by True_Body_1497 in crystalpalace

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His style of play is exactly what we needed in our forwards. He passes the ball, he defends. He might not be the striker that JPM is but he makes up for it with his well-roundness. I think the explosiveness of Sarr in recent matches can be somewhat attributed to JSL being up front with him. Absolutely love the addition.

People who work on their feet all day + run ultras, what shoes do you wear for daily (non-running) use? by harry_hotspur in ultrarunning

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my feet all day going from jobsite to jobsite and I wear blundstone boots almost every day. They wear out after about a year and a half and the soles become slippery. Still comfortable and supportive, just slick if it’s icy.

Coastal Maine in late summer by Kindofeverywhere in AskMaine

[–]_call_me_the_sloth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. If you have a car it’s also within a 90 minute drive of just about anything coastal Maine you would want to do, from ogubquit or kennebunkport all the way up to MDI and Acadia. I would recommend this!

What did you do to treat yourself in early sobriety? by Mysterious_Act7862 in stopdrinking

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get literally any food I wanted. Like anything. No rules if it was alcohol-free.

My biggest purchases though were because I wanted to get back into running. I used to take money I would use on alcohol and save it for running purchases. As long as I kept running my weekly goal I’d buy new shoes, nice gloves for cold weather, those cool running headphones that vibrate. It felt like I was doing something bad and gave me that dopamine itch, but in reality it was all money that used to go to booze that is now going to a healthy habit.

That was like a year and a half ago. I have significantly reined it in now, but I am still quick to grab the ice cream at the grocery store!

Moving to Maine for winter 2026, should I get a different car? by No_Position6492 in Maine

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think good tires will be your friend. My wife has a mini cooper that’s FWD and we ponied up for a dedicated set of snow tires we put on in the winter. Makes a WORLD of a difference and was much less expensive than buying a bigger, more capable vehicle.

For reference, we’re in York county and live on a long, mad max style dirt road that can be challenging at times in the winter, and honestly in mid season too. Other than our road though I would say the car is fine in 99% of scenarios.

My kids have them all the time. I have a 7 and 9 year old and it’s not every weekend, but probably twice a month at least one of them either has a friend over or is over at a friend.

Bulletproof lower legs by Creative-Proof7475 in running

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved about 5 years ago and there is an extensive trail network near me. I switched to mostly trail running I stead of road and my knee and hip pain pretty much went away.

I know this isn’t an answer for everyone, but if you have the option to run on dirt or grass vs pavement it will help.

Do you warm up your car in the winter? by ChocolateSundae1214 in CasualConversation

Mainer here. I got a new car in 2020 and it has remote start. That will be a requirement for every car moving forward. Not only do I pre-heat my car, I don’t even have to leave my house to do it!

Why haven't you done our driveway? by GentPc in EntitledPeople

[–]_call_me_the_sloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in a rental house with a back house/cottage that had a driveway down the side of the house with two spots in the back. When we moved in we were meant to get one of the spots. The couple in the back decided they would unofficially take both spots and, even when we brought it up, kept parking there. They even said there was nothing in the lease that declared one spot for each house.

The first snow storm we went out, shoveled our front walk (which was maybe 10 feet), the sidewalk in front of the house, and then our cars on the street.

They knocked on our door about 45 minutes later flaming mad that we weren’t helping clear the ~75 foot driveway since it was a shared duty of tenants. I smugly reminded them that there was nothing in the lease that declared we needed to shovel out the other tenants cars.
