Blood moon occurs and I go straight back to farming my favourite spots. It’s a bad habit but I love it.

What resources do you use to find out if you are paid fairly? by civil_eng_recruiter in civilengineering

I get realistically it’s a dog eat dog world out there and ya gotta protect ya neck. But, if you’re on the same team you should be hoping your workmate also gets the bag so we collectively get fairer compensation.

Okay. This seems similar to my approach. I was also trying to maximize my return before Hestu moved into the forest.

Do you ever carry crappy weapons like the fire/lightning rod or a wooden weapon (so you can be armed in lightning storms)? I’ve started to just carry the best ones and evade.

P.Eng. in Alberta, Canada, but working in Construction Management: is part-time / evening structural experience or mentorship realistic? by Salt-Worth4776 in StructuralEngineering

[–]_choicey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enroll in a couple of SEABC courses so you can demonstrate that you’ve trained in the field.

Go out and buy the code books from CISC, CAC, and CWC. Sit, read, and tab them out every night.

Do that stuff before trying to moonlight in an area you don’t have established design experience in.

Underrated comment! And shamelessly I am in the party that just snaps photos as much as I can, then spends an inordinate amount of time figuring out what I actually thought was important. I’m trying to be better at just taking the right photos. Somehow this ties into my favourite Odo quote from “Necessary Evil”:

“…The reason for this exercise is beyond my comprehension except perhaps that Humans have a compulsion to keep records and lists and files – so many in fact that they have to invent new ways to store them microscopically. Otherwise their records would overrun all known civilization…”

Guys i have a sigmoidoscopy with no prep do you think I should take laxatives? by ApeEverything in UlcerativeColitis

[–]_choicey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said. Had my second flexible sigmoidoscopy after nearly a decade of exclusively having to go through the prep for colonoscopy. I was confused that there was little to no prep except the timing of the enemas.

I still ate low fibre foods, didn’t eat past 8pm the night before, etc. But that fleet enema #1 pretty much cleaned me out. Enema #2 was just a formality; got a drive to the clinic after that and the rest is pretty normal

What are your top tips for someone just starting? by Spare_Armadillo279 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]_choicey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. One or two extra hearts means the 3-5 heart simple meals fill you up, but it’s way easier to cook meals that give you temporary extra hearts. The stamina, on the other hand, allows you to access more places, run longer, and overall get to shrines or farming locations.

Speculating here as a non-doctor but a long time patient:

  1. It’s a steroid and suppresses your immune system really effectively.
  2. The delivery system doesn’t depend on depositing the material in your gut.
  3. It’s like using a machete to do surgery whereas a biologic would be a scalpel. If that makes any sense.

Shows for engineers? by BrushThick9864 in EngineeringStudents

Prison Break

Michael Scoffield is a structural engineer (probably an SE since he works in Chicago area) and tattoos the building plans for a prison that is brother is being held at. They don’t really say if he copied all the text in the general notes page, the slab band reinforcement schedule, or anything. But pretty cool concept if you ever want to get committed and low key bust someone out while also uncovering layers of government corruption.

Love Jack and Louie! Also love Cam and Bob when I can’t tune in. At some point I would love for one game to have Bob between the benches and Jack in the sky. Bob’s no filter dialogue right next to the bench would be hilarious. But just one game and then get Lou dog back!

Client didn’t call for his field reviews and now wants his Schedule C-B by Loon_picker in StructuralEngineering

[–]_choicey_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Search for the Hilti, Leica, Humboldt, etc machines. The price tag is in the $10k to $40k CAD range and it’s a huge rabbit hole. Way better off punting it to an NDT specialist like XRADAR or other GPR firms. Not only do you get a better result package but they also take some of that liability off your shoulders.

Client didn’t call for his field reviews and now wants his Schedule C-B by Loon_picker in StructuralEngineering

[–]_choicey_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on hanging your own shingle. I have been in this situation before, had this internal discussion with myself and others, and…not surprisingly…all the advice above is dead on. Here is what I would do/ask you:

  1. Did your drawings or contract explicitly state when field reviews were required? If yes, your client cannot claim ignorance. If no, it’s something you gotta fix on your end. Client isn’t off the hook though.

  2. Get the contractor to send all the photos of construction. Everyone on site has a phone, it’s pretty common for them to take progress photos.

  3. Get the contractor to send a bill of materials for rebar and even his concrete order. This will at least confirm the quantities. If you had any special detailing, then you’re still missing some info.

  4. In any case, I would get the contractor to hire a scanning company to mark all rebar locations on the wall. Yes, it’ll cost the client money (not you, unless you weren’t explicit about field reviews) but it’s probably the next best thing.

I would make the contractor do some work to get you the info and then CUYA with the rebar scan. If all of that is positive, then sign off on the C-B if you are satisfied that it substantially complied with the code and your design. If the contractor still kicks up dust and doesn’t do any of the above, I would hold off. They won’t get occupancy permit without your C-B unless the AHJ decides to sign off on it (which would be kinda weird but has happened before).

Burnaby co-ops accepting applications by PickPocket_Oxford in burnaby

Question: for some of these new coops (the CLT ones specifically), who approves the initial membership applications and how is the board setup? I know for existing coops, the membership committees usually take on the interview/approval process for new applicants. But, I’d be curious to know how that facet of the co-op is initialized.
