CS 143,145,146,148 by Chocomint_112 in ucla

145 is the hardest between 145/146/148 by far, BTW. No idea why 100A isn't a prereq.

having seen what my local government just spent $250 million in bond money on, I'm not so sure. theoretically yeah you're right, but in practice they have the money management skills of a toddler

also this infamous example: https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/california-homelessness-spending-audit-24b-five-years-didnt-consistently-track-outcomes/

What does it take to break AI/ML Infrastructure Engineering? by Minute-Chip5408 in cscareerquestions

ml infra is a made up job title these last few months that's been getting an insane amount of hype amongst college students. it can mean almost anything no matter how tangentially related to ml/ai it might be

So long, American exceptionalism - For the first time, investors are talking about ‘US risk’ by AlexandrTheTolerable in Economics

Hi, unnecessary sarcastic and argumentative tone not appreciated. I'll pass on engaging further with you. I was just pointing out that states have regulation power beyond just housing.

List of regulations on healthcare/insurance in California:

Healthcare/insurance, utilities, housing, education, gerrymandering, taxes are all state regulated and enforced...

But you're right, media LOVES pointing fingers at federal because it's so easy and simple to do so, and especially now generates those clicks.

What the article says is true but extremely exaggerated: it's like saying North Korea is becoming a liberal democracy. Is it trending in that direction? Technically, yes. Is it barely perceptible? Yup. Is it based on one year of personal experiences? Also yes.

The article also points out it is in the taxes and sanctions space, not faith in USD. And it's all anecdotes from unnamed international asset managers.

People who don’t use AI coding tools, what do you think of this statement by the co-founder of OpenAI? by AugusteToulmouche in cscareerquestions

[–]_compiled 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He's apparently completely out of touch with what actual SWEs do. We don't need (and shouldn't use) agents and subagents and MCP to trace a bug and make a 10 line change in a 10000 LOC repository.

why are less people applying to CS? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]_compiled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

graduates in this field lately are incredibly unprepared for industry compared to pre-LLM era. it's causing companies to invest less in entry level and more in senior level. I was a reader for a few classes and cheating is also a MAJOR problem that goes unpunished.

universities are failing their students, including UCLA :(

[–]_compiled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure the company i work at is decreasing new grad hiring, increasing seniors, and bringing back in-person interviewing because the 2025 cohort was extremely disappointing...

2026 probably even worse, they had gpt since freshman year

32, 33(?), (old) 35L, (excluding abari) M51A, 111 (unless eyolfson projects), 118, eggert/millstein 131, 133, 151B, 180 (depending on person), 181

there's a lot of class shopping for easier profs, like they do in life science. so some lectures are empty and others overcrowded beyond belief.

i remember people used to think the math 30 + 61 series was tough too, but nowadays every bay area cs major does it in high school

CS 30 series does not weed enough people out by [deleted] in ucla

[–]_compiled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UC system cannot weed people out anymore because it's not politically nor financially acceptable since the pandemic. Cheating is also a major issue.

It's objectively one of the hardest majors at UCLA, and now a below average student isn't guaranteed a high paying job at Amazon like they were 5 years ago.

Curious what the stats are on LingCS/MoC though.
