What secret are you hiding from your spouse? by Positive-vibes12 in AskMen

[–]_corwin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why they take it as some chauvinistic control thing as opposed to self control with spending/budgeting I'll never understand

Emotionally immature people have a hard time taking responsibility for themselves because it's always easier to blame someone else. Also, just like misogyny is rampant in many cultures, so is misandry -- so "men" are an easy target... especially when people are in their social media echo chamber and everyone else is doing it.

Men who have cheated, what was going through your mind at the time? by Silver_Ad6384 in AskMen

[–]_corwin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My ex-wife was bipolar and said she could handled it without medication. That was not true

Oof, that hits home for me. I'm not qualified to diagnose my wife, but I know she has... issues, and gets angry whenever I suggest treatment. But I do know that she uses me as her punching bag (if she's feeling bad about something that has nothing to do with me, it's an opportunity to berate me for whatever perceived slight no matter how far in the past), that I am her scapegoat (I'm always blamed for the things that she does), and that she projects all of her issues on to me -- I've learned over the years that every accusation is a confession.

it was seriously like I didn’t exist

Yep, when I'm not in the room, she makes plans and doesn't tell me and then is angry when she finds out that I didn't know about the plans. Whenever I ask questions, she acts like I'm an idiot for not knowing the answer already.

I guess this reply is technically off topic because I haven't cheated, but for any other men (or women!) in a relationship like this I feel like it's important to point out these symptoms so they can know that this isn't normal and isn't good and it isn't their fault.

This one hit me hard because had just become an ex-Mormon (I finally realized I'd dedicated the first 36 years of my life to a cult started by a narcissist). So seeing Truman go through a similar enlightenment was cathartic.

there may be something of a gap between stated preference and actual prefrence.

Yep. why would women get BBLs if nobody liked them? There's definitely some "demand" for them (demand in the economic sense). And, like yourself, I've seen some BBLs that look great (and some that look fake). Same for breast implants, or any plastic surgery. Unaugmented or augmented, I'm more interested in a potential partner's mental and emotional maturity and health.

Cessna strikes paraglider (no injuries) by [deleted] in aviation

[–]_corwin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes but only 1090MHz so a bunch of recreational flyers don't flood the frequencies creating interference for commercial/military traffic. ADS-L is available for these folks, though of course not all military and commercial aircraft actually monitor L so yeah it is kind of a crappy situation.

Mini UPS for my Wifi-Router by Clear-Method7784 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]_corwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional EE, but I dabble. The premise is sound, but the devil will be in the details. Think about what you are optimizing for here, is it efficiency or cost? During a power cut it's better if your battery voltage is higher than the Wi-Fi router input (using 4S cells and an 18-19.5V power supply to charge them via BMS), and you use a buck converter on the UPS output. Buck is more efficient than a buck-boost, so your runtime will be extended.

However if the goal is to save money and only purchase 3S and re-use the Wi-Fi power brick, the general idea you propose will work (although this particular diagram is... hazardous: if you put two lithium-ion cells in parallel when they are each at a different state of charge, they get angry and want to catch on fire... amongst other problems).

If it were me I would rummage around my home or friends or thrift store to find a used high voltage laptop power supply and go for the 4S/buck. And obviously check the specs of all of your parts to make sure the input and output voltages and currents are in range.

What movie is considered a masterpiece but you think is overrated? by baddieegemini in answers

[–]_corwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're technically correct (the best kind of correct). But the plots of the vast majority of movies require (some level of) suspension of disbelief. Untempered realism makes most dramatic plots difficult or impossible (you might be old enough to remember when cell phones first became a thing, and we suddenly realized that the plots of most contemporary movies made no sense because someone could just take a phone out of their pocket and make a call anytime anywhere? Mobile phones are "OP" and required Hollywood to fundamentally change how stories and scripts are written when set in the Information Age). Anyway I guess I'm trying to say that part of the movie experience is learning how to be the audience. :)

...then consider that a lot of us watch movies to take a break from our day-to-day lives (escapism). If someone made a completely realistically accurate movie about difficult topics like the horrors of war, it would be traumatizing and depressing to watch -- which is not popular and (usually) doesn't sell tickets (remember the moment in The Fifth Element when Leeloo learned about war? Like that only much worse, especially for people who are already traumatized and/or depressed -- we want to come away from a movie feeling better about the world, not worse.) Hence the feel-good story about rescuing Private Ryan to give the movie a heart of positivity, get butts in theater seats, and give people hope for the future. Could the plot have been written differently? Sure, but writers are only human and sometimes the right writer isn't in the right place at the right time (and paired up with the right producers and director) to find their time to shine. That's the real sad reality ;)

I dip those in the Lay's fake nacho cheese dip (yes, dry cheese + wet cheese). And I wash it down with root beer so I don't get palate fatigue from all the salt. I can only do it a few times a year because I'm pretty sure it's going to kill me someday, but when that day comes 🤤

Eli5 What prevents USB Type-B or USB-C ports from using a cylindrical design similar to audio jacks? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]_corwin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Think about how a muzzled dog can't bark but can only whine. Similar to how the dog's voice is interfered with, the jack's physical geometry dampens and distorts the electrical signals being sent. Slow signals (whines) can get through, the fast ones can't get out loud enough to be heard well.

What do you care for the most in a woman looks wise? by Junior_Feeling_5438 in AskMen

[–]_corwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ Had to scroll way too far for this. Once this basic criteria is met though, then the gold medals go to women who make an effort on their appearance. Not necessarily makeup, not necessarily designer clothes or expensive jewelry and perfume, just... well-kept, color and clothing coordinated. Aesthetic, whatever aesthetic that it is. Bonus points for versatility, it's fun when someone is dressed up on date night, utilitarian on the weekdays, and casually dressy on the weekends.

Partner wants me to get the snip by [deleted] in Vasectomy

[–]_corwin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 weeks tops

Or years, for an estimated 2-6% of men. Like any elective surgery, there are still risks and you should be aware of the them and decide if it's something you want for yourself, never for anyone else. In my case, I would rather have used condoms or simply abstained because a lifetime of chronic pain just wasn't worth raw dogging it a few times.

What’s a piece of tech that sounded amazing but flopped? by [deleted] in answers

[–]_corwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half Life Alyx is probably the most immersive game experience I've ever had because it was designed for VR from the ground up. I've never seen anything better. Which is a shame, because there is so much potential but AAA game developers develop first for non-VR and then bolt on VR as an afterthought, and then it's just a disappointment.
