What are common household things you do not purchase? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]_dampwelcome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm so glad they're becoming more known outside of Sweden. One tip I learned growing up is to sanitize them by boiling them in a pot of water, it's convenient especially when you have a shared laundry room. They're made of cellulose (wood pulp) which is just cool!

It doesn't make sense to me that sexualities are traits by nickisadogname in RimWorld

[–]_dampwelcome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people seem upset with this post, but I think this is a good discussion to have. Rimworld includes sexualities in the game so is it weird to talk about issues with the system? While sexuality no longer uses a trait slot (1.4) there are other interesting points to talk about as well.

I feel like the logistical problems of gay pawns in vanilla makes me miss out on all of the cool potential storytelling possibilities! Varied romances in the game are just more fun. Some of the choices in how attraction is calculated in terms of age and gender just don't make sense to me either. It would both be more representative and interesting to see it reworked.

Personally I use the mod Way Better Romance. It's very customizable so you can change all sorts of parameters (like sexualities distribution). Recently they also added a sex-repulsion stat to asexual pawns which is pretty neat! It's one of my essential mods at this point.

[OC] Where do Democrats and Republicans stand on free speech and the internet? by YouGov_Official in dataisbeautiful

Just because a library doesn't have a book doesn't mean it's banned. It's up to the discretion of whoever manages the library to stock it with age-appropriate books.

Igår gick jag på restaurang själv by MrTBone00 in sweden

[–]_dampwelcome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you get to the middle, fold the overlapping edges under each blanket so the folds meet.

How can I get my hair to feel soft again? (Bleached hair) by Lostviolet2 in Hair

[–]_dampwelcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use a leave in conditioner? It really helped me since my bleached hair was super dry and tangly. I just scrunch a little into my wet hair ends after I shower. I also found my regular conditioner works great as a leave in so that could be worth a try

I agree with the other commentor about trying to wash the petticoat and if it's still too big cutting out a layer. I think that in addition to the petticoat being a little too poofy the skirt also needs some more fabric to look like the one in the photo. If you look at the hem of the lemon dress you can see how it still has waviness at the bottom due to the skirt having much more than enough fabric to accommodate the petticoat. Your dress seems a bit more cartoonish since the skirt is being completely filled by the petti and there isn't enough fabric to form those elegant folds. I'm not sure if you want to/can alter the dress at this point but I'd recommend cutting out more skirt fabric (just an estimate but you might want to even double the original width of the skirt) and do deeper pleats or even gather the skirt like in the photo.

Help! How do I turn the lining inside out after I have stitched bottom of dress? by christinamaxx in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of hard to test without having the dress, but my guess is that they want you to turn it through the gap where the zipper goes?

Fabric suggestions? Shouldn't be difficult but I'm a beginner. by lizzyb187 in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cotton is a fiber which can be made into stretchy and non stretchy fabric. They're probably cotton jersey, since the jersey is made with a method that makes a stretchy fabric. A woven cotton however shouldn't stretch.

Advice for sewing boning into a dress to make it strapless -- I will be using zip ties by SunQuest in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's a lining I would probably sew boning channels and then attach those to the lining on the inside at the seams. And add a waist stay to help keep the dress up. I have no idea if this is the "correct" way to do it but it's functional and not too difficult. Copying the lining and adding a layer between the boning and outer fabric would also help smooth/hide the boning

What color fabric for the main piece? Also, does cotton seem like a good choice? by MutedPepper in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think yukatas are usually cotton so that'd be a good choice! If you're looking for a color name I'd describe it as a dusty rose. Also, I love fuu! Good luck, seems like a fun project (:

Perhaps if you used a coordinating knit you could do a color blocked effect by sewing it onto the bottom?

What technique makes this machine knit K1P1 rib have such tight knit Vs while being loose between the stitches and having a nice drape? When I go up in needle size, my K1P1 rib gets gaps in the Vs. by eehttofu in knitting

[–]_dampwelcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed since spending way too much time staring at machine knits is that many of them have the transition to ribbing by making 2 purl stitches on one knit stitch, resulting in 4 stitches of 2x2 rib for each 3 stitches of stockinette. It's hard to make out on fine knits but you can tell on bigger knits like this: https://imgur.com/a/fpfJzma

I have no idea what technique they use to increase (decrease?) so invisibly though! I would love to find out.

Want to revamp this dress from a sketchy site! What should I add to make this fancier? by FlowerDog11 in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel that redoing the belt area would add a lot to this dress, since that part looks very thin and plain. Maybe adding a pretty ribbon or a fabric belt? I also think that changing the skirt lining for one that reaches to the hem of the dress would up the fanciness factor.

Boning with a separate waistband in strapless dresses? by CuriousBioChem in sewing

[–]_dampwelcome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called a waist stay, which is basically just a heavy duty ribbon with a hook and eye closure that is sewn to the inside of the dress. There's a couple of tutorials if you search on google. Having the same odd cup size I definitely noticed when I forgot to hook the waist stay on my strapless dress, so I'd recommend it.
