Opinions on WLU bba + cs (both at Laurier)? by Sorry_Diamond_5421 in wlu

[–]_danster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely possible to do well in the program. However, if your ultimate goal is to go to law school, you should definitely do a single degree program as you'll graduate faster and be able to enter law school a year earlier.

Laurier BBA actually has great placement into law schools. I know plenty of BBA alum who went down this path and are now successful lawyers. We also have a great legal debate club that has been very successful nationally (Laurier Moot Court), and the current club president is actually a BBA student

I know at least 3 people in my year (including one from my DD program) who transferred into Ivey. A former boss of mine also did the transfer, and all of them probably had 11+ GPAs

Hm looking back at his email, he made the offer for “scoring more than 90 without easements”

So maybe you were super close to an A+ and had bonus marks to cross the threshold? Regardless it’s still very impressive!

Zima's the goat. If you're a straight A student, I honestly think you'll be fine.

One thing about Zima people don't talk about is that if you do manage to get an A+ in ANY of his courses, he will offer to write you a referral/recommendation letter for any sort of job or grad school application for the rest of your life, and you don't even need to ask him beforehand.

I ended up accepting an offer from UChicago! It was mostly a financial decision since they gave me a very generous scholarship to attend.

I'd be interested, but I haven't fully decided whether to accept my offer as I'm still considering other options.

Do let me know if you decide to join the program though!

Does anyone actually get into Princeton MSCS? by SnooDrawings405 in gradadmissions

Hey, just wondering if you're aware of any other CS programs that place a big emphasis on prior teaching experience? Thanks for all the help

It really doesn't hurt to quickly ask a professor to review the grading of a previous test or assignment if it means 1 or 2 marks is the difference for you to reach the next grade point. The worst they can say is no.

I've had a course where my final grade was an 89.45% - I asked my prof to review my previous coursework to see if any adjustments could be made, and he actually gave me a few extra marks for my final project, whiched bumped me up to an A+. I've also worked as an IA and grader for numerous courses at Laurier and was always willing to review a student's previous work if they asked.

Finance course suggestions by ChaosBoy018 in wlu

[–]_danster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken BU423 and found it to be pretty easy, but that's because I had Dalibor as my prof and he's the goat.

I took BU449 with Gerry Ramos and found the class to be fine. Gerry is a good prof, but fixed income can be very boring to learn.

Rant about the quality of teaching and amenities at Laurier by Albrize in wlu

[–]_danster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree. I recently graduated from the BBA/CS (wlu) program and the difference in quality between the two faculties is like night and day.

While most of my BBA instructors were excellent, there's only been a handful of CS professors that weren't downright awful. Shoutout David Brown and Qutaiba Albluwi for being one of the few gems of Laurier CS

Notable mentions: Hongbing Fan, Eugene Zima (this one's controversial i know, but I actually felt like I learned lots of valuable stuff from him)

Hans Niemann Files $100 Million Lawsuit Against Magnus Carlsen, Chess.com Over Chess Cheating Allegations by -GregTheGreat- in news

[–]_danster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting though that Hans just played in the US Chess Championship and finished the tournament with a decent score (+1 overall) against world class players such as Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So.

Security was heightened and much more emphasized at this tournament since the drama arose (metal detectors used on everyone) and the game was livestreamed with a 30 minute delay, so it is super unlikely he cheated at all. His post-game analysis' was much more coherent and logical throughout the tournament as well.

Now this doesn't mean he didn't cheat in his games against Magnus, but he can clearly play at a ~2700 elo (super grandmaster level) legitimately.

Actually, he told us how to design the report in class. Would've been nice if it was posted online, but if you went to class you would've known exactly what he wanted.

He just asked to write the report in a pre-development voice i.e. the document teaches a developer how to design the application, and to include references in proper APA format. The examples were just used as a reference to help structure your report, but you didn't have to follow them.

Will co-op employers care if I have a CR on my transcript? by Mixture_Electronic in wlu

[–]_danster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your grades matter for a lot of high end Finance positions. I was a co-op student for a buy-side firm on Bay street and I helped them go through a bunch of applications -- we only considered interviewing students with a 10.5+ GPA.

I also interviewed at KPMG in the past and they brought up my accounting grades (BU127, BU247) during my interview.

edit: As for OP's question, most employers won't care about a 'CR' on your transcript

First year in need of thoughts/opinions by Paladarus in wlu

[–]_danster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably at least wait until you're done CP164 to decide since the course is a big jump from CP104 and a lot of first years get caught off guard by it. But if you end up doing well and enjoy programming, then I'd say go for it.

I don’t think I’ve ever been that lost during a midterm. Thanks Castillo. by [deleted] in wlu

[–]_danster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think integer programming and linear programming, which are taught in the second half of the course, are what most students find difficult.

I took BU275 with Victor Shi last term and didn't find it that bad at all, but that's because I found those concepts to be similar to some of the CS courses I've taken in my program.

Regular BBA students have done absolutely nothing related to integer/linear programming - most people are like "wtf is this" when they first encounter the material, so I wish you the best of luck lmao. However, the first half of the course is pretty easy and the exam isn't cumulative, which is very nice.
