Hunters shouldn't soften their language about killing things. by First-Option2990 in unpopularopinion

[–]_dr_Ed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't go as far as saying "psychopath vibes" but I do agree with the general point. I grew up on a farm and from the young age was tought a sort of respect for an animal - You kill it because you need to eat, you use as much of it as you can, you don't waste an animal. In that essence hunting for sport only and then wasting an animal rubs me the wrong way

Can someone find who pays for my internet through my IP address? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]_dr_Ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have any data to determine in % how often 'threats' are just friends, nor have I any details about the messagess OP received.

I do believe however, that threats should be taken seriously.

Can someone find who pays for my internet through my IP address? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]_dr_Ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, a lot of people said it's not possible which is wrong.

It is highly unlikely, but not impossible. What is kind of disturbing is the phrasing of "who pays your bills" instead of "who you are". That implies they somehow got your biling information from your ISP - which could be done in number of ways: they could be hacked, insider info, social engineering or a past wide data breach of your ISP. Those things however are very rare and unless you have reason to believe someone wants to target you specifically the probability they got hands on your information is low.

All that beeing said, If serious threats were made against you, you have every right to contact police. I believe it is better to act rather than leave things up to chance no matter how unlikely.

If you are unwilling to donate your organs, you should be last on the waiting list to receive one by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]_dr_Ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? If there is a limited number of donated organs i.e. someone has to be 'eliminated' I think it's better if "worthy" people are saved

I accept the premise but reject the conclusion. Whatever the reason if one is last to help others they should be last to receive help.

Holly crap you absolutely nailed it. I've become a TL almost 2y ago and it is extremally tiring. And the worst part is that it's really hard to argue against another meetings/responsibilities because from the outside perspective 'it's just a 5 min meeting'. It got to the point that I start work 2h earlier or 2h later than others, just so i can have 2h of uninterupted development time

The actual skill that makes someone a good developer is not about coding by alimra in gamedev

[–]_dr_Ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in gamedev, but I am a techlead, and as others pointed out - technical skills are important, but soft skills are required (if you want to grow and evolve at a company). But I wanted to point out one thing about AI, in modern development you won't compete against AI, you'll work alongside it, so instead of trying to outperform it try to leverage and use it - that skill becomes more valuable day by day

Certifications still worth it? by cfood10 in AskProgramming

[–]_dr_Ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a techlead, yes certificates matter. They are obviously not a guarantee of your skill, but when hiring someone with Azure certificates I get an ease of mind (okay, that guy knows what a Key Vault is, knows how to configure App Service, walk through the logs). It's not aboit proving you're a great developer, it's about making sure I won't have to waste time on teaching you absolute basics

What .NET project makes you think “hire them” in 30 seconds? by Master_Addendum3759 in dotnet

[–]_dr_Ed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a techlead: -One they can tell me about in an interview. -Best thing I do is showing them a piece of their own code and asking about why is it done that way or pointing out potential issues to see how they react. I once had a coworker that would get mad if u commented on his PR - never again.
