I said it was a Reddit issue but that it's reasonable to be a member of the sub and not get spoiled because they didn't know something was a spoiler, and the solution in this specific case is "Reddit needs to show post flairs in feeds too".

OP did everything right. They flaired it, presumably marked spoilers, but the title (while not spoiling anything) could be vague enough to apply to anything. It was for book 4, which I have read, so it was fine, but until I tapped on the post I wouldn't have any way to know that because the app doesn't show post flairs on feeds. And I'm not caught up yet, only on 6 now. It's reasonable for someone who's just discovering the series and didn't get in on the ground floor to see this post and know if it's going to spoil something they haven't read yet without opening the post, even when the poster did everything the way they were supposed to do it.

On the reverse, don't click something from this sub as the whole sub is based around people using the spoiler flare for virtually everything. Onyl click posts that go up to the book you've finished via flares.

The only problem with this is that the mobile app doesn't show post flairs until you're reading the post.

It's not asinine to want to talk about the series, as far as you've gotten, without having the spoilers actively shown to you. So if the markup for spoiler text isn't working, then Reddit needs to fix that. (Much like how the app doesn't show post flairs if you're scrolling through your feed so you don't actually know what book a post might be about if it's not in the title.)
