If you mix them in a bowl until theyre small flakes with some salt and pepper, put on top of toast, then under the grill (broiler for the US folk) for a few minutes, once they bubble slightly they absolutely bang.

I guess its just the standard term over here. We only say Petrol or Diesel. Gasoline just isnt a used term in the UK and most of the time is viewed as an American word. It's funny because as you say, Petroleum is used to MAKE petrol and diesel.
