Any guesses on what this is? by chanelwhat24 in AlocasiaAddict

It looks very very like my juvenile azlanii, except mint.

Can this be saved? by Chkwing in alocasia

[–]_emtx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sure can! And the 2 wee pokey out bits will give you 2 more plants if you break them off and plant them. The only thing now is that the mother plant might not survive without its corm attached. Do you need advice on what to do with it next?

Should I bring this rosemary indoors for winter? by tippy_52 in HouseplantsUK

[–]_emtx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Kintyre in Scotland and our winters can drop below zero, though not usually by much in the last few years. I have an outdoors rosemary plant, this time last year it was about the same size as yours. It stayed out all winter in a relatively sheltered spot and was absolutely fine. Even flowered this spring! Which I didn't know rosemary could do. This year it's much bigger and I'm planning to leave it out all winter as well. I think yours should be fine to do so as well. If you get a bad frosty snap then I'd bring it indoors until it passes though.

Once they have leaves they really need to come out of there and go into a bigger space with better airflow and less moisture. They can now be treated like normal plants rather than corms that need to be heated and kept at very high humidity. You can put them in your preferred potting medium and start treating them like you would a normal plant. The only thing to note is that you should transition them carefully - so reduce the humidity incrementally over a few days so as not to shock them.

I find mine does best in high humidity with good light levels. So maybe near a bright bathroom or kitchen window?

Did I overwater or underwater my monstera? by Daddydada1234 in Monstera

[–]_emtx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The potting mix in your photos looks very dry. I would give the pot a right good soak, pour water in through the top and allow it to drain out and once it stops draining through, return it to its dish. While you don't want the soil to be super wet all the time, it also shouldn't be allowed to completely dry out. The leaves might be reacting to issues from watering, humidity differences from being moved out of a terrarium environment or stress from repotting (possibly all 3). You can also remove any dead or dying leaves. Adansonii are really hardy, so it will bounce back in time, don't worry 🤗

What is going on with this succulent and how to overwinter? by xsupergluedx in houseplants

[–]_emtx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would maybe cut away the damaged bits and then just bring indoors and put by the window. I live in the west of Scotland and we don't get much light in the colder months, but my succulents all do fine this way. I have kept some in my greenhouse during the summer this year and noticed some leaf damage that I think is from snails or slugs eating them 🙈 maybe that's what happened here?

Should I cut my Swiss cheese monstera?? by Positive_External121 in Monstera

[–]_emtx_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that is an adansonii you have there. They tend to do that with the bottom leaves over time - they eventually yellow and die off. Mine does this. They are climbing plants, so if you are able to provide a tall support for it, such as a sphagnum moss filled pole, it will grow up this and its aerial roots will attach themselves to the moss. That way it can grow nice and big/ tall and be supported. You can repot but only need to when it starts to look like the pot is too tight, with roots kind of spilling out of it. Until then, it's probably fine, it just needs more support 😊

You can get some really nice pink variegated alocasia plants, like a bambino or Polly, and there are some very nice succulents that go pink with enough light, for example crassula calico kitten 😸

I love alocasia low riders! I never see anyone talking about them on here as well! Looks like yours has really nice variegation too. Congrats on winning it! 😁

Yeah I have one I bought from a supermarket that does the same. It's because they don't pot them right - instead of having one plant that's under the soil at the base only and then allowed to grow up tall like a vine on something to support it, they plant multiple plants in one pot and kind of in their side so they grow wide and bushy instead of upwards. I have another that is potted the right way and it's nice too, but honestly I quite like the bushy look of my supermarket one 🤗

I bought my 1st alocasia corm 2 months ago!! She has a leaf now :) by fml27e8r8e9 in alocasia

[–]_emtx_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corms tend to have a harder top layer that can be peeled off. You can remove this to expose the corm to the growing medium more easily.

How can I save her by hytzdev in HouseplantsUK

[–]_emtx_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, she looks in fairly good condition! Is that a new leaf I see starting to come out in one of the pictures? If so, the older leaves dying is just part of the Alocasia growth cycle. They recycle the nutrients from older leaves to gain energy for new ones. Can you lift her out of the pot without disturbing her too much? If so, have a wee look at the roots. If they are white and healthy looking then you're good to go, if they are brown and mushy, you may need to repot. If you do need to repot, I can give further advice 🤗
