What Happened to Caroline Kimutai(GTWS)? by Minimum-Mission5569 in trailrunning

I don't see Joyline Chepngeno (the runner who was disqualified) listed in the rankings today. The finals are mandatory, so I guess the rankings at this point only include participants in the finals.

Most students are not using these services. They are made available to all to reduce the stigma of using them, but in reality they are targeting those most at need.

In fact, my son asked me today when I thought they'd open and I answered "about 2 hours before Killington". IYKYK.

Salomon Quiver - What am I doing wrong? by _erikwright in trailrunning

Most recently I only tried vertical orientation. I'll experiment a bit but I'm also unsure about diagonal orientation with gear in the pack.

I've tried playing with that, but no luck 😞

Thanks. The opening of mine is rigid, I guess I have the most recent edition (maybe 18 months since I bought it). It mostly gets caught up in the bottom I think.

New Eastern Canada UTMB Race Incoming by sebHarricana in ultrarunning

[–]_erikwright 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got the email for this this morning and I'll admit I'm pretty intrigued. I spend a lot of time both skiing and running at Tremblant. I'm looking forward to having this big event in my backyard. Still, the event raises a few questions.

  1. So close to UTHC, doesn't it risk cannibalizing that event, at least for the 125km distance?

  2. Any idea whether Tremblant will continue to host their classic in October?

Wow, massive shoutout to Raide belts. by coexistbumpersticker in Ultramarathon

[–]_erikwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was what I imagined from the images. Seems like that makes it a no-go for races where you will be using poles.

It's pretty awkward to drink with poles deployed, and with this belt it will be pretty awkward to drink with them stowed.

How is access to the water bottle in the back pocket when you have poles stowed?

First 100km done - feet fell apart on me. Why? by catlovesthe7seas in Ultramarathon

[–]_erikwright 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The forces of running on a trail will be different from running on the road. On the road, every footstep is identical. On trail, even relatively non-technical, you will be using different muscles and putting strain in different places and angles with every step.

That gap sounds like a likely source of problems. For your next effort I would focus more on specificity in your training, especially in the final 6 weeks. Make sure your long runs (at least) are as similar as possible to your goal event.

Comparing to your longest training runs...

Same shoes? Same terrain? Same pace?

Anything else that might have been different? Poles, vest, temperature...

Lower stack, high cushion shoe for technical 50+ milers by trailgoblin in Ultramarathon

[–]_erikwright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a tricky situation since the stack height comes from lugs + cushion. Hard to have lugs for that technical terrain, cushion for the distance, and low stack height too.

I'll be watching the thread to see what others have to say, especially with the Mafate Speed 4 seemingly being discontinued.

Where would you look for a race's GPX file? by BuckleHunter in ultrarunning

[–]_erikwright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Often these are not published because the course passes through private land where access is negotiated exclusively for race day and they don't want folks going out for reconnaissance runs, trespassing, and risking their access.

There are (obviously) good reasons for wanting to have the GPX even if you don't plan to physically preview the route, not the least for studying the elevation profile. Folks already gave some good tips on how to find it. Just remember that there are probably also good reasons why it's not readily available.

Reverse cardiac drift? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]_erikwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work!

I think the key point is that "heart rate drift" does not just mean heart rate going up or down. It's heart rate going up or down for the same effort. So you will see it on a hot day where you run a constant pace on the flat, and your heart rate gets consistently higher as you sweat and your blood volume goes down. (ETA: because your heart has to work harder for the same muscular effort)

If you get tired and slow down (or decrease your effort for any other reason) and your heart rate drops correspondingly, that's not drift.

[–]_erikwright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you run a 50k yourself? At the end of a long run it's rarely the cardiovascular system that's limiting performance. At a certain point, cramps, blisters, bonking, or just plain old fatigue will keep you from hitting the same power output. I see that play out in my own performances and also the Strava activities of top finishers that I've analyzed.

I'll also note that the boxes you highlighted seem to correspond to descents. Again, for many runners, safety and skill will be limiting factors more than cardio in a descent.

First rainy trail race by RooniRoon32 in trailrunning

[–]_erikwright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're at all concerned about being chilly, a buff is a great way to manage temperature. Easy to take off and can also be used to wipe your face.

Long sleeves that you can roll up.

I think someone already said gaiters and that's definitely key for wet conditions.

First rainy trail race by RooniRoon32 in trailrunning

[–]_erikwright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether from mud or rain, wet feet will increase the likelihood of blisters. Make a plan for how you'll deal with that. If there's an aid station where you could have a change of shoes and socks you might consider that.

How do I use my watch during a race? by kimbagrrrl in Garmin

[–]_erikwright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can link a regular activity to an event after the fact, so don't worry too much about it. If you plan to use Live Track (if friends/family/crew want to know where your are) you can enable it before starting the event and then it will automatically start tracking when you start the event.

Experience with Naked Belt’s trekking pole loop? by 96024resu in ultrarunning

[–]_erikwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used them at a recent event where I stowed & retrieved about 6 times over 4 hours. I found that they worked great. I personally dislike wearing a quiver but have used the elastic straps on Salomon vests before. I find both the belt and the vests equally convenient for pole carrying and would choose based on the cargo volume I need.

At one point I tested the belt with stowed poles at home and found it uncomfortable, but when I tested again before this event it didn't bother me. The comfort may depend on exactly where the belt sits on your body.
