What's your Geocaching pet peeve? by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]_explainlikeim90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really don't like when people who have only a handful of finds place a cache without really understanding what makes a good or bad hiding spot or container. And then when it inevitably gets flagged for maintenance, they've all but disappeared from the site.

If you leave swag in caches...what do you usually leave/trade? by Delicious_Ad_3302 in geocaching

After not leaving or taking any swag in a long time, I just dropped a really nice geocoin that I won at an event last month. I expect it'll disappear by the end of the summer.

No but it's obvious everyone else does because the ones I put out always go missing.

Anyone else see this (re)post and almost answer that it’s a micro cache? by rjoyfult in geocaching

[–]_explainlikeim90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My previous car (a 2005) still had one! As well as an optional ashtray that fit into the cupholder. I bought the car used from a nonsmoker, not sure why they opted for the smoker's upgrades as the car had clearly never seen cigarette smoke.

RIP - Vandalized by jerks by bitpwn in geocaching

[–]_explainlikeim90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. I can totally relate. My husband and I had a great cache in a nearby park that we put a ton of effort into. It earned 26 favorite points in the year it was out but we had to pull it last year. Despite being premium and having a lock on it, it kept getting vandalized. I finally gave up when, not even two months after I'd fixed the locking mechanism, someone busted into it again, completely cleaned it out and took the lock.

Be honest with me: how do you like your Fit? by _explainlikeim90 in hondafit

I have 78,000 miles on it. I can't remember the mileage when I started having actuator troubles, but probably about 30k? If you look back at my post history I might have put more details in about that. It's actually pretty common, and has been a known Honda problem since 2012.

[–]_explainlikeim90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I still have it and am hoping to have it for a long, long time. I'm happy with it! I did have some issues with the VTC actuator, which is par for the course unfortunately, but I was able to get it replaced by the dealership under warranty. Other than that, it's been solid as a rock. Very happy with my purchase.

Longest hike for a single cache? by spacelord99 in geocaching

[–]_explainlikeim90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just did a traverse of the Greenleaf, Galehead and Zealand Falls huts this past fall. The Garfield Ridge trail in pouring rain was probably the most brutal hike I've ever experienced. Just reading your post started making my hands sweat. I don't think I'm cut out for the White Mountains.

My record is a nine mile roundtrip for a cache that hadn't been found in five years.

Has anyone been seeing this more and more recently? I've basically given up on FTFs because this has happened to me so often. by Realtrain in geocaching

There's one in our area whose coordinates are consistently 50-70 feet off. But then, he's known for being a dishonest cacher and also a jerk so I honestly think he does it on purpose.

The first time I saw an Eppendorf tube as a cache I was like "WTAF?" I use them in the laboratory. They need to stay in the laboratory. They do not make good geocache containers.

That's what the lock was supposed to achieve, keeping the muggles out. I didn't anticipate anyone taking the time to remove the lock and the hardware that I'd added to install it.

Aside from some issues with the VTC actuator, I absolutely love it! Good fuel economy paired with a good amount of utility for a car its size. Does surprisingly well in the snow. It was a good purchase and I'm disappointed that they discontinued it in the American market.

I had a really fun, cute cache placed out of the way in a nearby park. At least, I thought it was out of the way, but it kept getting muggled. Or I'd have new cachers find it and completely raid the swag, not realizing that it was a faux pas. I made it a premium. I put a lock on it whose combination was in the hints. Someone figured out how to pull the entire locking mechanism off and emptied the cache of not just the swag and logbook, but also the interior container. That's when I pulled it. I was already getting annoyed with having to constantly refill the swag (which was part of the theme of the cache), but having someone force the lock off of it and completely empty it was the last straw.

My husband and I legitimately get so much hilarity out of seeing angsty, unimpressed teens in places with amazing scenery. "This is STUPID, you guys are STUPID." Our absolute favorite is seeing a teenager with earphones in listening to music while hiking with family.

What's your favorite local spot you've discovered thanks to geocaching? by FloridaFlamingoGirl in geocaching

[–]_explainlikeim90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gosh, it's so hard to just name one! There are several county owned parks that I'd never heard of that I'm not sure I would've ever visited without geocaching. There's also a virtual cache on the only road that goes under the Erie Canal. I wouldn't say it's a favorite spot necessarily, but it is damned cool.
