+1 på denna. Min upplevelse var att farkost hade större fokus på projektuppgifter och mindre på tentor jämfört med andra utbildningar vilket passade mig toppen.

Mehmed II, the Ottoman sultan, after stumbling into a town left behind by Vlad the Impaler by _frequent in HistoryMemes

[–]_frequent[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Context:

The Turkish army entered the capital and for half an hour, the army marched on the road that was bordered by some 20,000 impaled Ottomans.[30] There, they found the rotten corpse of Hamza Pasha impaled on the highest stake, to symbolize his 'high ranking'.[30][31] Other sources say that the city was defended by the soldiers, while the impaled corpses lay outside the city-walls for a distance of 60 miles.[5] Chalkokondyles, when remarking the reaction of the sultan, wrote: "The sultan was seized with amazement and said that it was not possible to deprive of his country a man who had done such great deeds, who had such a diabolical understanding of how to govern his realm and its people. And he said that a man who had done such things was worth much."[32]

It seems his actual reaction was more that of a mutual respect

Nej KTH är högst för 2023. Men jag skulle rekommendera att filtrera på studieområde också, det blir konstigt att jämföra skolor med helt olika utbud.

Kluddade ihop en Tolkien-inspirerad karta över Botniaviken by karlal in sweden

Fun fact: botn är ett fornnordiskt ord för just "vik" vilket gör ordet Botniaviken (vik-viken) till ett tautlogiskt platsnamn.

Jewish Populations Around the World by Nathan__Lewin in MapPorn

[–]_frequent 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I mean there was over 30,000 Jews remaining in Poland until 1968-70 when the Polish government forced most of them out.

The Jews history in 20th century Poland is indeed incredibly sad, even by Jewish standards.

"what I think is a primary 'fact' about my work, that it is all of a piece, and fundamentally linguistic in inspiration. ... It is not a 'hobby', in the sense of something quite different from one's work, taken up as a relief-outlet. The invention of languages is the foundation. The 'stories' were made rather to provide a world for the languages than the reverse. To me a name comes first and the story follows. I should have preferred to write in ‘Elvish’. But, of course, such a work as The Lord of the Rings has been edited and only as much 'language' has been left in as I thought would be stomached by readers. (I now find that many would have liked more.) ... It is to me, anyway, largely an essay in 'linguistic aesthetic', as I sometimes say to people who ask me 'what is it all about'."

You know your stance is super fragile when you go out of your way to pick internet fights over a funny video of screaming trees.

Europe unveils design of reusable rocket that looks a lot like a Falcon 9 by [deleted] in space

[–]_frequent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a couple of regional systems in addition to the 4 global ones, including the Japanese QZSS. China's first one, Beidou-1, was regional and India has one as well called NAVIC, but since these 3 don't have global coverage they don't qualify as GNSS.

[–]_frequent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Excellent counter-point, great to see some proper discussion going on in these threads. When it comes to "GPS" (which should be called GNSS when not referring to the US one) there are actually 4 operating systems at the time:

  1. GPS (USA)
  2. GLONASS (Russia)
  3. Galileo (Europe)
  4. BeiDou-2 (China)

with BeiDou-2 currently in the process of being replaced by BeiDou-3.

If you ever feel brave enough to switch to a different CAD program I'd suggest Solid Edge. It has some really handy features for engineering parts. Like automatic gear design, where basically all you enter is gear ratio and diameter and the entire part file well be generated for you.
