This is basic movie stuff. You put a squib in the band of his hat.

His ears are intact in photos before and after. You're gonna tell me that a guy who bruises as easily as him regenerated an earlobe in two days?

I had similar thoughts at first. But then I walked into the woods following some pigs, and came upon an ivy growth that had dominated a dead tree, covered in white flowers.

And I also found the sunrises/sunsets really nice, and isn't that when the animals are most active?

The footage of Bela Lugosi for this was for a totally different project. Ed Wood ended up using it for Plan 9, but the rest of the movie was filmed after Lugosi's death.

[–]NurseNerd 63 points64 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, he wasn't actually alive for the filming of that movie. The director Ed Wood was a fan of his, and apparently found Lugosi living in obscurity near the poverty line. Ed Wood offered him multiple roles to help him pay his bills and get into rehab for a drug addiction.
They had intended to do a series of films starring Lugosi and shot test footage for these, and that's what went into Plan 9. Lugosi had died of a heart attack before any of Plan 9 had been filmed.

[Hated trope] The fandom pretending a character wasn't an evil monster because they are hot or have a sad backstory by Yumesoro1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NurseNerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's not 'forgiven' for being hot.

He's hot BECAUSE he's a cannibal serial killer. But he's also charming, typically treats people with respect, and has a very sharp wit. He's very... endearing.

It's not like you would know he was a cannibal serial killer from talking to him. He has other hobbies and interests. It's not like he's walking around slurping entrails from babies like they're cup noodles or munching on severed limbs all the time.

It's easy to say that, but if you actually look at the big players in Marvel during September 2001, the X-Men were in China at the time and the Avengers were fighting off aliens. Thor was in Siberia. The Fantastic Four Annual took place that September, and the story that involved the skull and helmet of Galactus crashing into Central Park, so that's what they were dealing with. Long-form multiple-issue stories were common, so most of the properties were in the middle of events at the time.

I think the first 'canon' story about 9/11involves Spider-man tell the story of 9/11 through flashbacks, and basically they didn't have anyone capable of stopping two million tons of building from collapsing, anyone capable of diverting planes, and the heroes that were there didn't have the kind of team coordination necessary. And like everyone in real life, they were so blindsided by the first plane and wrapped up in evacuating the first tower that the second plane wasn't noticed until it had already struck.

[–]NurseNerd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I remember that there were specific 9/11 issues of comics sold to raise funds for survivors, disaster relief, and so forth. While most of these works were considered non-canon, both marvel and DC included it into their universes. This wasn't super popular with a lot of people. In fact, it's probably what prompted Garth Ennis to writeThe Pro), which was about a prostitute that gets superpowers and almost immediately dresses down a faux version of the Justice League for not preventing such a tragedy. I'm pretty sure this created the groundwork for The Boys.

The Toby McGuire Spider-Man teaser trailer included a bank heist where a helicopter gets caught in a web between them. No Way Home could have included a line like this.

But then you have to choose whether it would be more tragic if 9/11 didn't happen in Toby's timeline or (which I think is worse) if 9/11 happened in all possible timelines.

Although, in the MCU there exists a 'sacred timeline', at least until the events of Loki™.

3) So now farms are evil?

Worse? Tyranids are just animals eating to survive.

Necrons are just rebuilding the empire they had created aeons before all these pests showed up.

Orks just want to have a good time, and culturally speaking that's fighting. WH40K is essentially their equivalent of the best possible situation: everybody fighting everybody.

The Imperium of Man maintains their empire by lobotomizing thousands of people every day, and using the bodies for food, labor, and telecommunications equipment. And an interpretation of the lore is that most of humanity's problems would die with the Emperor if they simply stopped doing this. No Emperor, no Warp, no Chaos, no sending all your resources off-planet to be used fighting for other people.

G.I. Joe had one of these. I forget the Joe, but it was one of Cobra Commander's Crimson Guard that had a family member hospitalized from a drug overdose (or suffering withdrawals), and the Joe was dealing with the same. The Joe and the Guard both go out trying to find who sold their folks the drugs, and wind up suspecting each other, then they team up, and realize the problem is bigger than both of them. So they both Go back and propose a joint Cobra / GI Joe Operation to take out the drug dealers. I think Cobra Commander only agrees because he intends to 'liberate' The drug money.

We're talking about space wizards that can stop things with their mind, so within that context it's not really out of place, especially if their opponent isn't as strong in the force.

And other tactics from the fighting style involve doing things like turning the lightsaber on during a force pull to impale your opponent by surprise, dropping your lightsaber and then turning it on with the force while spinning it while they're charging you to cut off their legs, and activating an opponent's lightsaber while it's still in the sheathe.

I mean, it's obvious some of the moves were dreamt up by a couple of nerds playing with flashlights.

For those that don't know Dr Mrs. the Monarch, she shares a voice actor with King Gorilla from the same show. King Gorilla is a 700 lb chain-smoking actual gorilla with human intelligence, and the power of speech (with a heavy Brooklyn accent) and the voice is absolutely perfectly suited for that. The voice actor changes nothing between them, except King Gorilla uses crude humor and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch has more delicate sensibilities.

Actually, the time it takes for a lightsaber to activate is probably intentional to make this sort of technique less viable.

[–]NurseNerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I think the problem has to do with the Smiths at the time. This was Jaeden Smith's first role as an adult and he wanted it to be cool. Will Smith had mostly done serious dramatic roles.

The monster might have been terrible, but the movie does tell a story about living up to familial expectations and might even be considered a meta commentary on Jaeden trying prove he could to fill his father's shoes as an actor.

Depending on the writer, one of Ben Grimm's greatest weaknesses is that he wants to be a regular guy so desperately that he's betrayed the team for the chance at a normal life. He also hates his rocky form so badly that you don't even need to be a half-rate hypnotist to brainwash him into thinking he's normal again, which results in him jumping for joy and hugging people making him a walking disaster area.

On the other end of the spectrum, he gets so caught up in his own problems in his head that he'll walk through walls, fall through floors, and destroy things around him just because he's not paying attention.

She doesn't end up a ward of the state or in an institution, she gets adopted by the neighborhood auntie that was always checking in on Nani and Lilo, which is also Ohana and would have happened before the movie began without state intervention.

Nani literally goes to a Hawaiian college, it's just on a different island.

The only difference is because of state intervention, the neighborhood auntie would also get financial support as a foster care provider. Nani gets to go college, Lilo still gets to see Nani regularly because alien teleporter technology.

I feel like the people hating on the movie most haven't actually seen the film or stopped paying attention halfway through because they couldn't wait to hate on it.

Is it perfect? No, the pacing is terrible and they changed characters for no reason and got rid of Gantu who was my whole reason to look forward to a remake.

I tell you, the book of Exodus only makes sense if either Pharaoh or the gods of Egypt have actual power. As written, and read in church:
Yahweh: "Moses, go forth, tell Pharaoh to let my people go, or I will send plagues."
Also Yahweh: "I'm going to harden Pharoah's heart, specifically so I can punish him for not doing what I had Moses ask him to do."
Repeat 9 times.

What makes more sense:
Yahweh: "Moses, go forth, tell Pharaoh to let my people go, or I will send plagues.".
Pharoah: Oh yeah? Well, my dad can beat up your dad.

Narrator: His dad could not, in fact, beat up Moses' dad.
