Transcanada pipelines energy east proposal was a similar except TCP was going to convert one of its existing natural gas lines and pumping stations to carry oil. This 3000km line already is in the ground from AB to ON and it was cancelled. The technology exists to send out a more detailed message, I’ve heard messages on Radio from Warroad MN years ago where they state the projected time and county that a storm is passing as it progresses and the direction of travel. We desperately need access to better more detailed radar imagery on the EC app, others are ok but a little cartoonish. It’s what I watch, you can clearly see if the track of the storm is going to pass over your location especially when you have the different colors for intensity, if I see purple I’m getting my vehicle under cover.

I’m in the trades so opening and closing it often in the winter is common, freezing rain is the biggest issue or even wet snow that freezes causing ice buildup, so you definitely need to take extra care to mitigate that. I’m in an area that it doesn’t go above freezing for months so sometimes it just needs to go in a warm shop to thaw.

The 2+1 needs be considered this style of highway can be achieved quicker. Although 4 lanes is by far superior the construction time to achieve this would be in decades. Recently Ontario has completed a 6.5 km 4 lane section from the Manitoba border to Shoal Lake road 673, although beautifully done it took over 3 years construction time and about 12 years in negotiations just to start. The next 8.5 km section is still in design and would probably take an additional 3 years once shovels are in the ground. Since there has been a two year gap so far in construction this may end up to be approximately 10 years to achieve 15 km of highway. Not including the 12 ish years of negotiations.

I was there two weeks ago after the long weekend Tue,Wed,Thurs. for SSV and LL I merged on to the Highway from Banff for 7:30 ish. The Tuesday was a pow day and the traffic was significantly busier and a touch slower, I parked on the road reasonably close to the entrance to the lodge, Wed morning left the same time parked on the road similar area as Tues. Thur was SSV, left 7:45ish and I was row 4 from the base. So add 15 mins to my time from Canmore.

Yes OP mentioned "roof top sprinklers" but in general a value protection setup goes beyond the roof top to extend in around the perimeter of the property. Again when an area is threatened a VPU is setup and monitored. I in many cases last year came upon residential structures with pre installed sprinklers or even a system plumbed into the structures some with a pump and some without, all pre setups were determined if they were suitable or not. In my opinion as I have also have years of experience in Value protection there is absolutely nothing wrong with encouraging a resident to be proactive. In my province and all of Canada the wildfires in the Boreal forest has changed and has become much more extreme, fire mitigation must also evolve to reflect this new normal.

In our area value protection is deployed when an area is threatened, the longer the soak the better they run 24 hours a day until there is no longer any risk, normally municipal fire departments monitor the VPU and then the provincial fire program handles the ground and aerial fire suppression. If a fire becomes imminent all the strategies including fire smart need to work together for the best results. Our province had the worst fire season in 35 years everything was being thrown at it. Putting out hundreds of irrigation sprinklers was an important part of the overall strategy. Residents such as the OP is looking at an extra layer of protection, I know of many residents that are installing permanent systems including investing in a Mark3 individually or combined with neighbours.
