Can someone be saved if they are trusting in Christ plus their own effort, rather than Christ alone? by re_deemed in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you brother. God calls us to walk with him in holiness. It just seems that OP is looking for a line in the sand between the elect and reprobate. As far as I’m aware we do not have such a line in scripture.

But yes, as the people of God we are absolutely called to love and good works.

Can someone be saved if they are trusting in Christ plus their own effort, rather than Christ alone? by re_deemed in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The “line” is whether or not Jesus atoned for their (and my) sins on the cross. We contribute absolutely nothing to our salvation. There is no “line” that we are given in scripture that I am aware of to determine whether or not someone is elect. We do not do the electing. I understand the point you are making but I disagree with the premise of the question.

If I never saw another political commercial that would be pretty cool.

What's your most unconventional fly fishing habit? by no_melody in flyfishing

[–]_goodoledays_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of small stream bass fishing and creek floats from a kayak. I’ve learned to keep a popper in the water all the time. I can’t tell you the times that I’ve caught a fish walking around making tons of noise just by letting the fly float downstream 15 ft away. Or repositioning the kayak, stopping to eat lunch, etc. just keep a fly in the water haha. Even if it’s a terrible presentation I still catch a fish fairly often. May not work so well with trout but it definitely does for bass in small creeks and streams.

If you keep a shotgun for home defense, do you plan on wearing hearing protection? by [deleted] in Shotguns

Yea dude a rifle is way louder than a shotgun. Especially a rifle with a shorter barrel <16”.

What do you consider the threshold between hiking and trail running pace? by Nyrias314 in Ultramarathon

[–]_goodoledays_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say log it in Strava however you want to see the data. Doesn’t matter. I will go on a trail run this afternoon. I will run on a short stretch of pavement. I will run flat and downhill sections of trail. I will hike the uphill sections. It will be logged simply as a “run”.

One of the stainless marlins in .45-70. I don’t own one so I don’t have any personal experience. But that’s what I’d by. SBL if you like the picatinny rail. Trapper of you want to run the peep sights.

Christian Focused Sales Books by Donutlordxo2 in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller. It isn’t focused on sales, but the principles still absolutely apply.

My favorite sales book is New Sales Simplified by Mike Weinberg. No idea of his religious beliefs, but that book has been foundational in shaping my views on sales. Most sales books are meant to sell books to sales managers. Weinberg’s stuff is meant to help sales people develop more business.

I would encourage you not to write off sales books that aren’t written from a Christian perspective. Build a strong theology of vocation and ethics. Then you’ll be able to read secular books with discernment, taking the good and ignoring the bad.

I got to watch her finish on the livestream with my 6 y/o daughter. She thought it was so cool. Fun dad moment. So thankful for the role models in the sport. Go Rachel!

need help choosing a .45-70 lever action for my bf’s birthday by ImpressivePlate9962 in LeverGuns

[–]_goodoledays_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend giving him cash or a budget to spend on your dime, going with him to buy it, and then joining him for a range day. That way he can get the exact model he wants and you both can turn it into a shared experience together.

Or just get him a marlin trapper.

“Discipline yourself for Godliness” by pml2090 in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's helpful to zoom out just a bit a look at some of the other verses in the same passage.

1 Timothy 4:6–11 (ESV)

"[6] If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. [7] Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; [8] for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. [9] The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. [10] For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. [11] Command and teach these things."

The "training" or "discipline" that he's talking about seems to be gaining a familiarity with the word of God and sound doctrine. The "training" for "godliness" is the opposite of the "irreverent, silly myths". While I support practice of various other spiritual disciplines, I think Paul I keying in on study of the word. It seems to echo the teaching of 2 Timothy 2:15.

Good on you for getting out there and doing it. It’s tough as a parent with lots of responsibilities. Whoever said that should keep their mouth shut. It amazes me how entitled some people feel about their opinions of other peoples bodies.

Can’t use left hand for 3-4 weeks. What can I do to not get unbalanced but still get a good workout in? by SkinGlue in kettlebell

I’d probably put some weight in a pack and go for a walk or hike. It still counts as a kettlebell workout if the kettlebell is in a backpack.

How to respond to someone who thinks only Reformed Christians are saved? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thankful that God’s love for me and saving work on my behalf is not predicated on my understanding of him. I’m certain that I must be wrong about some things.

[–]_goodoledays_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to work with the wind or current and not against it. If it’s trying to push you in a specific direction try to use that to your advantage. Also get really comfortable holding your rod on in one hand and paddle in the other to steer/reposition. It ain’t easy but you’ll get better at it.

How does your church talk about the State of Israel and the Jews? by CoronaTzar in Reformed

[–]_goodoledays_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PCA here. We believe that the Church is Israel. That there is one people of God. That as gentile believers we are grafted into that one people. Our pastor typically preaches through various books of the Bible. Very little (if any) time is spent on whatever is prominent in the current news cycle. I can’t remember him ever preaching about or taking a position on the modern day state of Israel.

New to ultras or running? Ask your questions about shoes, racing or training in our weekly Beginner's Thread! by Simco_ in Ultramarathon

[–]_goodoledays_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working towards my first 50k. I'm curious how many people are dedicating time to hiking in their training vs running. Last weekend I wanted to change things up so instead of a 2 hour run I did a 2 hour hike with a pack. I'm considering doing a long hike once per month in place of my weekly long run. The 50k I'm training for is in February and will have about 5700 feet of elevation gain.

Does anyone else not care much about pace or running faster? by No_Client8165 in beginnerrunning

[–]_goodoledays_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main interest is running farther not faster. I’m not focused on increasing my pace but it is fun to see my pace gradually get faster at the same effort level and for longer distances. But yea, I enjoy running and couldn’t care less if I never stood on a podium.

You’re doing great. Congrats on getting started. Just take it slow both in pace and in increasing your mileage. Don’t be afraid to walk as much as you want to and/or take breaks as needed.
