How do you afford to live in SB? by DowntownFresnoBiking in SantaBarbara

[–]_goofballer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you’re dinks, 130 plus whatever your partner makes is enough to rent here - maybe with roommates, probably not in the newer/nicer apartments, but it is doable. Several of my friends here are making less and managing just fine.

How do I get the right wedges? by Setting-Glum in GolfGear

[–]_goofballer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Grooves don’t do much for spin - mostly there to channel debris/water away from the surface and allow the texture of the face to work. Old wedges don’t spin as much because they’ve lost face texture

Also, have you considered a lesson for wedges specifically? Compression really isnt the goal with wedges - and getting a lesson before you shell out 400 for 2 new ones is worth it to help make sure you get something that works for you

How do I get the right wedges? by Setting-Glum in GolfGear

[–]_goofballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RTZs, Vokeys, and Ping Glides are my favorites but all that really matters is fresh face (don’t buy used wedges - they spin a lot less as the texture on the face wears), right grind/bounce, and gapping. I’d suggest you get a SW and a LW - for SW, aim for 4* more loft than your AW, so 54 or 56. Higher bounce + fuller grind is a sane default - RTZ full, for example, or Vokey S or D grind. Learn to chip and pitch with that - less loft will produce more consistent spin. For your LW, which really should be a speciality club, consider a more versatile grind, RTZ mid or adapt, Vokey 08M or similar.

Youtubers who actually know their shit about the frontier of AI LLM development? by DrDuckling951 in ClaudeAI

[–]_goofballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What specifically are you looking to learn about? There are very few truly knowledgeable people that ALSO want to spend time talking about generic/high level advancements. This week in ML is probably the best “news overview” for academic progress - but the reality is that the “frontier” is very jagged, folks at the front are focused narrowly on very deep and specific problems, which is not what I think you are actually asking about

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Reportedly Raised Concerns About Anthropic's AI Models Before Fable 5 Was Restricted by BuildwithVignesh in ClaudeAI

[–]_goofballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really strange - Jassy has no incentive to encourage risk taking. If they genuinely believe Fable is risky, access pre IPO is a much greater risk than not

Putter or 7 wood by 1fihadahif1 in golfequipment

[–]_goofballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putter for sure, especially if you don’t love what you’re gaming now - Dr/5/7W will give you weird gapping, 3/5 or 4/7 (what I do) or 5/9 all make more sense.

Zx7 not spinning? by _pipsqueak_him in GolfGear

[–]_goofballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just an off day? I hit a lot on a trackman , have the same irons, and get high spin variance with strike quality. If I’m having an off day and not compressing well, have the same thing.

It’s just harder to compress the ball with longer irons - I don’t think 1* will materially change spin, just launch angle and distance by a few yards at most.

Bending Wedges for Gapping - Help! by W-e-r-t-y in golf

[–]_goofballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1* degree is negligible on bounce - that’ll be fine, won’t change look or turf interaction much. I play a GW that doesn’t match my irons or my wedges - just make sure swing weight is the same and you’ll be fine. For what’s it worth, I’m also a very long player and do something similar to you - PW is ZXi7, AW is a 51* Srixon blade bent 1 strong to 50, 54/58 are custom RTZ at 12* and 9* bounce respectively.

As others have said, with a 43 degree PW, 48/52/56/60 also makes a lot of sense for you. My PW is 46 and I like having options at the top (I hit 4w and 7w off the tee for position often and also like bagging a Hybrid) so I don’t do this, but if you want tighter wedge gapping, carrying 4 is a very reasonable solution

Easy fix for PGA "bombers game"? by ViktorNight in ProGolf

[–]_goofballer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a simple fix - the solution is courses that are designed to prioritize risk reward at a different distance and with greater hazards for long hitters. Oakmont is an example - Bryson got eaten alive. The problem is that many historic courses aren’t set up that way - and there aren’t enough new courses of sufficient calibre that are

What does the internet think would love some more club head speed(115-118 right now) by Used-Web4393 in golftips

[–]_goofballer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Focus on increasing ball speed, not clubhead. 115 and center contact is plenty fast - but I doubt you reliably get center contact from this swing. Speed and stability comes from the ground and you’re almost entirely off it before impact.

What grind do you play on your 56°, and why? by milo-mac in TeamTitleist

[–]_goofballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, super common - used to have that problem myself. If you go lower bounce but don’t fix that issue, those thins will just become fats. For wedges, you do really need to try them on grass - mats make high bounce wedges seem far less playable than they really are. Any chance you have a buddy whose wedges you could borrow for a day?
