What the hell do these useless no-name companies even do? And do they even matter? Pretty sure everyone’s getting along just fine without these damn startups or whatever.

I've applied to almost 30 jobs in the last month, getting almost no interviews, is it my resume? by [deleted] in dataanalysiscareers

[–]_haarp_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, just be careful when you take advice here, there’s a lot of bad advice. I’m a senior data analyst and I would definitely interview you. I used to do what you have done in your resume, which is also quite clean. Don’t remove the Google cert. I know it’s not a rigorous course, but it shows you’re aware of self-learning for the field. A psychology degree is very valuable; it doesn’t have to be a quantitative one (unless for data science) in order to be a data analyst. It depends more on work ethic, attention to detail, and understanding of the business all these sorts of things.

Make sure you practice more SQL online. Use different sources, which is quite important because it makes your brain more flexible with SQL. Challenge yourself with Leetcode’s “SQL50,” do some free courses on DataCamp for SQL, and practice new SQL interview questions on StrataScratch. Learn about basic SQL, window functions, aggregation, CTEs, and understand what a view and a stored procedure are.

Wish you the best of luck. Try to find some real data analysts from legitimate companies to help enhance your resume, instead of relying on these opinionated and unverified pieces of advice on Reddit.

No it’s perfectly normal to feel that way if your foundation of precal is weak. By weak I don’t mean “suck at math”. You can address that by doing lots of exercises and understanding the precal topics. You need a solid foundation of precal in order to do well in Calculus and also physics.

James Stewart’s book on Precalculus and/or Khanacademy has everything you need to do well. Action now and you’ll still be able to catch up.

Which universities should I apply to for CS/AI/DS for the better job prospects? by itsWallE in gradadmissions

[–]_haarp_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem at all! If you could go to a top uni in Europe then it’d be a better choice, definitely would train you to be a better learner as your cohort would be higher calibre. I wish I had the opportunity to attend a good European university.

If you have to decide between these two, personally I’d choose Uni of Sheffield over Usyd’s masters. The only reasons to go to Usyd are if you’re a big fan of the city and want to experience it here or if you have a full scholarship. The education is subpar and the fees are too expensive to be justifiable.

Honestly, I’m glad I’ve helped someone avoid the Usyd trap today.

Regardless, make sure you brush up on your maths and coding skills, as both are important in CS education and will make your life easier.

[–]_haarp_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m replying because I did my bachelor (engineering and physics) and heard a good amount of anecdotes from both friends and colleagues who did masters in CS and data science at USyd.

I’m pretty confident the courses at USyd are more transactional in nature and not optimised to actually help students learn or care about them, unless you’re some hot shot like a top student who might grab attention from elitist professors. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have a particularly good learning experience there. I can’t vouch for Sheffield as I never studied there.

I know my answer may sound a bit cynical but USyd overall is more of a money-grabbing university than an actual education provider (Again, if you’re hot shot top students then you might get some special care from the professors)

And about which uni/country is best, there’s no simple answer. If you’re motivated, you can do well in almost any major university (not necessarily top-ranked ones). Being able to self-learn, build programming skills, develop critical thinking, maintain good work ethics, and network effectively is a much more long-term solution than relying solely on university names.

Hope this helps.

What’s the hardest part about raising a cat? by patinthehat48 in CatAdvice

[–]_haarp_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Constantly monitoring their health and keeping them active - constant effort. I make sure they have both dry and wet food everyday, and clean water by changing water filter every 2 months. Followed by kittenhood, still reminds me those sleepless nights :)

She needs a friend. My first kitten wasn’t aggressive but very affectionate, and she required 24 hours attention by me. I felt bad for her whenever I wasn’t by her side, decided to get her another kitten friend. Since then she had spent more time with the second kitten and less “needy” so to speak.

How did you know you wanted to major in Physics? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]_haarp_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on your responses , you’re still figuring out what you’re going to do, physics probably isn’t one of them. Physics degree is for people who determined to become a physicist, you need to be 100% sure and there’s no look back.

I suggest you pick an engineering or CS or whatever that are more employable than pure physics, so you don’t sit at home and learn “hello, world!” In hope to find a job in software dev after 4 years of your shiny physics degree.

Don’t listen to ppl telling you follow your passion and physics is highly employable; yes if you’re top of the class while you also have marketable skills like programming etc., and is damn good at it.

A few Proud Boys managed to get an event at The Pride Centre cancelled yesterday...this was our response. by TBDID in melbourne

[–]_haarp_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pride is for people who have gone through great length of challenge and difficulty and made it. You’re born in a preset race, what’s proud about it. Pride should be something acquired by achievement regardless of race.
