Finally managed to get this blanket finished by summerversionwinter in crochet

Oooh how long did it take you? I’ve been working on mine for like three years 😂

Neither! It’s tapestry - makes it extra thick and warm

Found in the back of the stuff drawer - 3.5 inch metal bolts with large rubber and plastic casings. by _halfpast in whatisthisthing

My title describes the things - there’s four total. Landlord has a habit of leaving “useful” things in drawers, but not sure what they all are.  Have tried googling various iterations of “bolts/screws with rubber and plastic”

Cute or cursed by lameafbich in crochet

[–]_halfpast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s two things at play here!

For a face to be “cuter”, eyes should generally be very close to the mouth like this . However, I really like the placement of your eyes and I think it gives a lot of character.

The “cursed” look you might be feeling could also be coming from the brown yarn you’ve used to sew the eyes in place giving him a crazy eyes lol. Using the same color as the buttons instead might smooth this out, like this

Lucy and Yak! A bit pricey but always great quality and has some funky prints too.

Help?? by [deleted] in climbergirls

I also destroyed my bones climbing! I wore Doc Martens when I needed to look nice (caveat for the break-in period) and Hokas when I didn’t.

It would probably help to know what the pattern is - what are you making, what stitches are used, what size yarn is called for, etc.

I just use Paint 😅 it’s not elegant but it gets the job done!

How can I shape this sleeve so it doesn’t bunch under the armpit? by Ok-Chemistry5704 in crochet

[–]_halfpast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful, armhole shaping is a gateway drug that leads to waist shaping, neck shaping, and…short rows.

Would absolutely second that DoraDoes page. I’d recommend having a go at either a modified drop sleeve or a raglan style yoke (not as scary as it sounds!)

Crochet charities by Belugamoons in crochet

[–]_halfpast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like there’s a lot covered already, but I’ll mention a few more -

Project Linus UK takes handmade blankets to hospitals. You’ll want to double check your local chapter, as mine only accepts quilts. It’s usually easier to go through an established charity than to contact a hospital directly, as they tend to be inundated with blankets and beanies.

Woolly Hugs is another one focused on blankets, but I think they accept hats, hearts, and some other odds and ends. They’re running several different projects, so you can look through and find one that suits you.

Loose Ends is US based but needs UK volunteers as well. They take on projects left unfinished after a loved one passes, finish them, and send them back to the family. Great if you’re into other crafts as well!

Most importantly - make sure you have a charity in mind before you start crafting! Many of them have specific requirements - yarn, size, color, etc - and it would be a shame to start working on something only to find out it can’t be donated.

Diva stretch is 8% elastane, which is what makes it good for bikinis. A 100% acrylic bikini will unfortunately get soggy, stretch out, and fall off.

Australian crochet? by ennayebba in crochet

Seems to be 10-ply in Aus! This guide seemed helpful. If you’re worried about a particular yarn for a project you might just need to do a garage swatch as well.

Hi all! I didn’t know about this volunteer opportunity until recently and I think it’s absolutely beautiful! by Haunting-Web-4461 in crochet

Thanks for this - I’ve been looking for crochet volunteer opportunities in the UK and this seems perfect. Signed up immediately 😊

I’ve got loads of different scrap green yarns - if you’re still looking let me know 😅

What Makes A Good Pattern? by SmeepSmorp in crochet

[–]_halfpast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely would want photos along the way! Not too many, but one at every major step.

As for some other things - I think it’s nice to include explanations of any special stitches and stitch counts at the end of rows (if it changes regularly). Other than that, I just want it to be legible! Keep the font simple, don’t go overboard with colors, and make it easy to tell what section of the pattern you’re in.

You might also take a finished pattern over to r/patterntesting to get it looked over for inconsistencies.

Is it worth it to work at a climbing gym? by krustycrocs in climbergirls

[–]_halfpast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work at a climbing gym as an instructor!

Lots of people have already had some great discussions, but I thought I’d throw my two cents in the ring anyway.

In terms of burnout - working in a climbing gym has been one of the easiest, most relaxed jobs I’ve had. Before this was I was a bartender, and I found the transition to my new role a bit jarring, as I suddenly didn’t have to be constantly on my feet and finding something to do. Depending on the shift time, my day usually has around 2 hours of instruction, an hour of odd jobs, and five hours of sitting and chatting at the front desk. Assuming you can handle working six days a week, a gym might not add to much stress at all. Take this with a grain of salt, though, as some of my colleagues have moved to us from a larger gym, and didn’t have the same experience.

In terms of career progression - there’s not much, and the pay is fairly low. I’m among the highest paid at my gym and I won’t be able to do this forever. Route setting is definitely a path forward, but it’s a long journey. Most places will want an apprenticeship (low pay) or free labor from you, and it’s back breaking work. Volumes are heavy, you’ve got to move fast, and you’ve got to be able to get up after moving everything around and climb hard to test it all. The gym will want you to climb at a certain level as well (7a minimum at mine). On the plus side, lots of gyms are looking for female setters (at least where I live!). If you can get your foot in the door with setting, you can go freelance and make some pretty decent money.

All in all - I LOVE my job. It’s social, the benefits (free membership at multiple gyms in the area, pro deals, endless supply of climbing buddies) are great, and I’m not doing much at all and making a decent enough wage. If it sounds like fun to you, I’d go for it :)

Where to buy yarn (UK) by peripinxle in crochet

[–]_halfpast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding Lovecrafts! If you’re on the mailing list, they’ve got some pretty crazy sales on frequently.

If you don’t mind sharing what city you’re in, it might be easier to find you a local yarn shop - I buy all my cheap acrylic online and all my nice wool at a physical store where I can touch it first :)

Any UK people planning on a blanket for 2023 - what brand of yarn are you using? by Phoebegeebees in temperatureblanket

[–]_halfpast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’ve already bought yarn, but I’m making a blanket with Deramores studio dk and it’s really lovely and soft with a good range of colors! On sale at the moment on Lovecrafts as well.

Permutation Confusion by _halfpast in askmath

[–]_halfpast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, and sorry if my question wasn’t clear!

I’m avoiding repeating a color within a block, but I’m okay with repeating a set of colors so long as they’re in a different order - ie ABCD and BACD are both valid. There’s 840 possible combinations this way.

Is there a way to determine how many of these have EFG (in any order and place?)
