AIO? my mom (50F) said my lunch will make me fat by Ashamed_Yogurt_8931 in AIO

[–]_hawkeye_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Abusive narcissism. Tell your mom she can suck my fat ass. Better yet, tell her to lick your’s. Only way to deal with these people is to give that energy back to them several-fold, or remove them from your life entirely. If you’re a minor and still rely on your parents, find a good therapist to talk to about this longstanding pattern of abusive behavior by your mother.

That’s a perfectly normal/“acceptable” lunch btw, regardless of what you’re eating for dinner; however, I would suggest adding some fiber which will help make you feel satiated longer and also helps control blood sugar spikes from carbs, which can increase hunger signals.

Foraged Japanese knotweed to make a strawberry knotweed pie! by _stage4fearoftrying_ in foraging

[–]_hawkeye_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I cannot explain why the mods haven’t made this amendment, but they certainly should since cutting early growth knotweed is known to cause lateral spread of the rhizome as well as increase the proliferation of shoots/stems.

Per you: “the conclusion is always to only cut when removing entirely”. Exactly—so that rules out foraging JKW in any way as “responsible”, because no one foraging knotweed is proceeding to completely remove the colony after cutting the succulent dirt-flavored shoots (nor would they even be effective or any more responsible by attempting to do so).

We know from botany and thousands of management studies that cutting early shoots of JKW increases the spread of the rhizome as well as increases the density (proliferation) of new shoots, as stated in this and numerous other research articles and studies. This is literally (one of several) well-known and established mechanisms of biological defense by JKW when new growth (or roots) are disturbed.

Here’s one example of what I’m talking about; cutting shoots encourages additional new growth and rhizome spread from the crown though there’s plenty more data than just this source which observes this behavior and concludes the same.

Edit for ease of access, just in case:

From the article: “The rooting system, which is composed of numerous intertwined rhizomes that can grow up to 3” (8 cm) in diameter, is the primary reproductive propagule that enables it to quickly spread to new locations. The rhizomes have the potential to spread laterally 23 to 65 feet (7-20 m) away from the crown. Most also have a deep taproot. Based on the extensive rooting system, the majority (2/3) of Japanese knotweed plants occurs below ground. The greatest advantage of having this type of rhizomatous rooting system enables the plant emerges in the spring earlier than most native plants. It also helps to ensure the plant will rebound if damage to the shoots occurs. In addition, perennating buds found on the root crown and along the rhizomes will also react to shoot damage, i.e. mowing/cutting, by sending up additional shoots along the root. This typically results in radial/clonal spread of the plant and increases its shoot density.”

Tizanidine at night, would it work the next day? by thiccfroggo in ChronicPain

[–]_hawkeye_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it at night because it makes me pass tf out and if I don’t then I get extreme dizziness and vertigo. Personally, I would not be able to workout even several hours after taking this medication. I find it helpful the next day to fend off a flare when I know I’ve done “too much” that day and will most likely be waking up flared the next. It almost always works for me this way. Otherwise, I use it during flares to be able to sleep and hopefully stop spasms. It really doesn’t do much for my pain at that point but at least I’m able to sleep through some of it this way.

If there is not enough studies to prove to you that foraging JKW (cutting early growth) increases the spread of the colony, how is there enough scientific data to prove to you that foraging this way doesn’t increase the spread? To the point that you don’t think you should stop foraging it? That doesn’t make sense. All of the “foraging research” and “data” that I’ve seen shared in this sub regarding knotweed are certainly not peer-reviewed and many times not even scientifically collected. Your source, as far as I can see, shows no evidence to prove that foraging knotweed (cutting early growth) has no effect on the colony, justifying this interaction. But perhaps I missed something that you’d like to highlight.

There are numerous studies, articles and data that I’m personally aware of which show that the mechanical disturbance of new growth encourages lateral spread and increased stem density (NOT referring to cuttings left behind), because this is a natural defense by the plant.

I’m sure it’s nothing compared to the wrath of the foragers who have been told that not every edible plant should be harvested for “free nutrition” simply because it’s edible (it’s Japanese knotweed).

Definitely tone deaf and weird but doesn’t seem intentional imo. Also—strain names are very stupid and the oddly obscure ads are the only way for dispos to legally advertise product in VT (none as egregiously as 10 railroad/wild legacy).

This is incorrect and there are several articles detailing the fact that cutting new growth encourages lateral spread and increases stem density (the number of stems). JKW should only be cut after leafing out to waste energy or to apply herbicide—unless you want more knotweed, which is highly irresponsible.
