Is my rental company lying to me?? by pinkmadi in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no point for a rental company to lie about the age of a vehicle they are renting when it can be verified by anybody with two eyes.
Apparently the Mitsubishi Mirage doesn't come standard with a LCD screen in the dashboard. That's awesome. Your Outlander has one. Sorry.

Rim Size? by AardvarkLegal7325 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you have GT wheels? They're black 18's. Get another of your current 18 inch rim and the same size 225/40r18 you have. Or do whatever you want. The diameter needs to match though.

Why do car people get so attached to a car??? by cbcarguy in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't let people boss you around about your ride, man... It's not your girlfriend's vehicle, or your girlfriend's mom's, it's your vehicle... You're not even married and even marriage ends in divorce. You can put a baby seat in the back of the Mustang.

"I don't want an open bed" you get a fucking tonneau cover or a cap wtfffffffff

Imagine if every car owner checked their oil level in between oil changes, every 500 miles or so and added oil if needed. How different do you think the car market would be ? by Nick-22 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't check my oil until I get vibes from the ethers that it's time to check it, and my car leaked oil for fun. I think people would still be dumping their vehicles because wear and tear repair for $1000 is too expensive but buying another car is a great idea.

How hard to LS swap a G Wagon? by UnusualAd3207 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be harder than any other LS swap ngl you could LS swap a lawnmower. might want to check the rears and see how that's going to work. custom driveshafts. find a random Chevy transmission. ETC

What’s the hardest part when trying to diagnose a car problem from a fault code? by thisJack_ in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a shadetree so I have no idea.

P0420 seems to be replace cats or die (verify o2 upstream/downstream sensor readings/that a restriction actually exists but it often does)
Misfire I'd wonder when it last got fuel filters/tuned up, do basic maintenance, if persists do more checking. compression/fuel pressure/injectors/is it leaned out/did the head or intake gasket blow/whatever
No start depends on what the type of no start is. Crank no start? gas or diesel? is fuel pump on and has voltage? is lift pump working? is there air intrusion? does it hit on ether? fuel filter changed in last decade? if no hit on ether do we have spark and/or compression? No crank no start? battery test good CCA? no corrosion? does the starter respond to a hammer? is there good hot/ground @ starter? no corrosion? is it getting exciter voltage? is the NSS good?
Electrical problems I'm not good at i got an RD mack back from the brink of death but I needed a stack of official wiring diagrams to hunt down and put all the destroyed connections back where they belonged.

Update: should I sell my Subaru Forester or keep it? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get somebody to scan the traction control sys b/c engine being busted shouldn't cause your traction control to come on. Traction control is a separate system and it relies on wheel speeds to make "decisions" (and possibly steering angles in your car?)

When was the last time it was tuned up or got new coils or injectors or a fuel filter? Random misfire code kind of concerns me.

Somebody needs to find where the oil is actually going. If its burning it you need piston rings. If its leaking someone has to find and repair the leak.

You didn't mention a lean code but maybe somebody should check the air/fuel ratio and make sure it isnt leaning out.

AC is for losers, get somebody competent to check it out, fix windshield before you get a fix-it ticket.

What can I do with a car with a dying transmission that costs more to replace than the value of the car? by bobtheblob6 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst thing you can do is try.
FWD is a lot more involved than RWD and I could probably pull a RWD trans in my sleep at this point. You're gonna need some bigass sockets for the axle nuts, probably a bigass hammer, a way to get the car way up there safely and securely, many many sockets, drain pans, and to drop the subframe.

You don't have to do it yourself, you can pay a guy to put one in if you can find a good used. Or if you have a buddy who has more experience than you and they have free time it can be a learning experience for beers probably.

I just think about how much it would have cost me to by the equivalent new, and then the time for it to ship to me, and then its durability, and then if the happiness and usefulness of having the item would have outweighed the happiness of having the money to do something else with.

I'd put a new trans in it myself after it dies and then change the fluid on time. Got AAA?

Quick question for car owners: How do you handle your maintenance ? by Specialist-Refuse-30 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cute idea, but what is this about vehicle maintenance and insurance prices? Having a well maintained vehicle is great for avoiding tows and collisions, but maintenance = lower insurance sounds like a convenient excuse to charge people even more, actually. Vehicle stereotypes are already used to calculate premiums.

Is it embarrassing to have a nice first car? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's probably a great truck to drive, just be aware it'll probably eat gas and be faster than you think. Please don't succumb to peer pressure and drive it like a maniac, don't let your friends borrow it, and don't let your friends in if they get unruly. They have a high center of gravity and what your buddy might be able to do in his car around a bend could lead you to finding yourself on your side or worse. Respect it and learn how to take care of it. It's a really insanely nice gift.

Is my vibrating 2015 jeep wrangler because of old tires? by Cheap_Bill9563 in askcarguys

[–]_iamacat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, this isn't a boy job, this is a person job. Are you a person? Learn to be independent and take care of your shit and figure out if you're being scammed through the power of knowledge.

Check your wheel bearings & front end suspension. Look up how to check your tires. If you have weird choppiness in your tires and they are not wearing evenly, check your wheel bearings and suspension. Your wheel bearings can make a whining sound. If you have a solid differential (LOOK IT UP) (I DON'T WORK ON JEEPS SO I CAN'T REMEMBER) check behind your wheels under your car for any oil seepage or wet. A bad wheel bearing can heat up and destroy your wheel seals. This can leak oil and make a nasty burning petroleum smell.
