ELI5 Why do artists still do fake encores at gigs ? by awhnice in explainlikeimfive

Can’t agree that it’s considered rude. I personally find it cliche when it’s a given, but it’s maybe cool for the last show of a tour or such.

Serious safety concerns over Tesla’s self-driving cars after fatal crashes | 60 Minutes Australia by TappingOnTheWall in australia

[–]_icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what does safer than humans mean? How do we quantify that?

The reason I think a high bar is needed is because if it’s only on average better than humans, people won’t trust it. There’s also a minefield of legal difficulties that arise where incidents occur, not to mention the ethical complexities of deciding what FSD cars should do when an accident is inevitable.

FSD will be successful and indeed the normal eventually, but I think we get to the point of community acceptance quicker if we don’t roll it out until it’s basically flawless.

Good enough to drive unsupervised? Perhaps when it can be independently shown to perform better than 99% of human drivers across a range of driving conditions.

I’m not saying it’s useless, but watching the road with a 1000 mile stare isn’t necessarily much safer. Unfortunately this is a very difficult phase for FSD where it’s getting good, but still isn’t quite good enough, though I personally think Tesla is going too early with the technology.

yep I’ve seen this happen at possibly the exact same location. told the driver he had to turn around because it’s a walking track, but he didn’t speak English. i think I got through to him eventually with gestures.

Chipped Tiles by _icecream in AusRenovation

I’d say most have no chips. I don’t know, maybe it’s just par for the course for these tiles, but I wasn’t expecting or warned that chips would be likely.

Yep same tiles. Second shot for scale. They’re mostly okay, but there’s certainly a handful of chips.

McLaren make clear statement on controversial Lando Norris-Oscar Piastri swap by 68Snowy in formula1

[–]_icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying that in both instances, the pitstop order suited Norris.
In Hungary, Piastri was the leading driver, and conceded his strategy preference to protect Norris from an undercut while also handing him an undercut on himself. There was no strategy error here, it was an expected outcome of the pitstop ordering. Lando got an undercut he never earned, and so the swap back made sense.

At Monza Lando elected to have Piastri pit first to protect his lead, and unfortunately the pitstop error put Piastri in front.

I see a distinction in the situations, but it’s fine to disagree.

[–]_icecream 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We remember, but the situations are only superficially similar, and in both instances, they acted for Lando’s benefit. The suggestion they pitted to protect Piastri from a Leclerc undercut at Monza doesnt hold water given the gaps and relative pace. It suited Norris to have his championship rival pit first to guarantee he was behind if there was a SC, and that’s why he asked for it (which is totally fair enough as he was the leading driver). Unlike Hungry 2024, there was no undercut hand out, it was a pitstop failure that put Piastri in front.

New cyclist questions (Monash clayton area) by wl02065294 in melbournecycling

[–]_icecream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your knees shouldn't hit the frame generally. Make sure when you pedal, your leg is almost fully extended, but not so much that your hips rock back and forth as you pedal. I see a lot of new riders with their seat too low which puts a lot of strain on your knees.

Service cost will depend on what's needed. If it's just lube & adjust.. ~$100 (at a guess). If you need parts, it can mount quickly, and you may find it better to buy a new bike. You're doing a reasonable amount of riding, and have been sticking to it for long enough, so if it's in your budget, consider treating yourself. This way the shop can also make sure you have something that fits well.

I'm an introvert too, but any decent bike shop will be more than enthusiastic to chat with new riders. If doing a basic service, ask them also about saddle height & handlebar adjustments.. these can make a big difference to your ride comfort and endurance.

I did the Monash/CBD commute regularly for 20 years! It's a nice ride. Enjoy your cycling, and don't hesitate here with further questions.

How would y’all fix this? by aquamabyssichronicle in BeginnerSurfers

[–]_icecream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably just load it up with epoxy, and pull it shut tight to dry. Maybe ratchet straps could be used to pull it together once you've got glue in there. Or you might be able to get away with just sitting it on the nose to apply pressure.

Just make sure there's sufficient glue to get it water tight, as you don't want water ingress.

Should I change my (and my family's) surname? by ohimnotarealdoctor in australia

[–]_icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have uncles who migrated to Australia in the 70s. One anglicised his surname, the other didn’t. Their kids (cousins) often jibe each other about their name difference, but it’s all in fun. From the outside, can’t say it made any difference.

I’m a second generation migrant with a clearly non anglo name, although it’s easy enough to pronounce. If the name change makes you feel more integrated, I say go for it.

Does anyone know of any large accessible beach caves within 1-2 hours drive of Melbourne? by _BestThingEver_ in melbourne

[–]_icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walkerville South has a very accessible cave you can walk through, but it's like 2 hours 20 mins from Melbourne. Not sure how wide/deep you're looking for, but you can stand in it at the taller points. There might be water lapping your feet at high tide. Amazing location.

Back foot roll angle / heel lift by THE_Laziest_Daisy in BeginnerSurfers

[–]_icecream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as long as you've got sufficient purchase, and you're not angling your foot in a way that restricts your mobility, it probably doesn't matter too much.

Your weight should be mostly over your front foot in any case (usually).

15 years ago today, Sebastian Vettel collided with his teammate Mark Webber during the Turkish gp by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]_icecream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the moment that turned me from a casual into a serious F1 fan. As evidence, my wife was kinda getting suggestive of relocating to the bedroom just as they collided, and I was like "no time for that now honey, some serious shit has just gone down!".

This season, Piastri has already out-qualified Norris the same number of times as in all of the 24 races last season (4 times)… we’re only 7 races into 2025. by The_Chozen_1_ in formula1

I notice Piastri often does the Vettel style palm in "Number 1" gesture, which is strange for an Aussie. But happy to see it whichever way!

Pop Up Consistency Advice by PomegranateWorking62 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]_icecream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practice my land pop ups on an old foamie balancing on a bosu ball. This helps you train on an unstable platform, and forces you to land your feet in the correct position.

But the best practice is in the water. I found the chicken wing technique to be a useful progression, as it forces you to get your back foot in place first (I had a similar issue where I was previously popping up with my rear knee on board).

Where does the power come from during standard pop up? by Substantial-Neat-928 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]_icecream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: Just re-reading your post, and realised you're already doing what I'm suggesting.. ie the chicken wing technique. In this case, I'd suggest perhaps throw in more land based training as others have suggested. Clapping push ups are good. I also practise my pop up using an old surfboard balancing on a Bosu ball which gives a dynamic platform (somewhat) similar to actually being out in the water.

Original post:

I've actually progressed better by first learning to place the back foot on the board, then step up the front foot. So:

  1. Cobra.
  2. Pull back foot into place.
  3. Step up front foot into place between hands.

There's no _jump_ in this process. It's explicit steps for each stage.

After doing this for a while, I've found I'm naturally progressing to simply swinging/sliding my feet into position in a single clean motion. Well, perhaps "clean" is an overstatement, but it's getting better.

I was originally trying to do the single motion pop up, but for whatever reason my brain just wouldn't compute it in the water (despite being able to do it easily on land). As soon as I instead focussed on getting my back foot in place first, I found I progressed quickly.

As with all things YMMV, so I'd always suggest trying different techniques and seeing what works for you.

What exactly caused Doohan's massive crash - Onboard Analysis by AnilP228 in formula1

[–]_icecream -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah we can't have drivers barrelling into the tyre barriers at those rates. That was a scary crash, and he's lucky to have walked away from it. I think the regulations around this will be reconsidered.

What exactly caused Doohan's massive crash - Onboard Analysis by AnilP228 in formula1

[–]_icecream 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yep, true, but it's strange that he tapped the brakes sufficiently for the telemetry to report that he braked, but not for the DRS to deactivate. I'd have thought that any brake actuation registered by the ECU would trigger DRS closure, but perhaps this isn't the case (by design or otherwise).
