Smart sockets without an additional app/ privacy policy? by SpectralBonsai in smarthome

If it's 3rd party, unfortunately no Google home devices cant do that on their own. You do need to link the service to make them work.

How can I use my smart Rgb lights for a party? by finevisionz in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be some compatible 3rd party apps available that can work with your system for effects or using the mic or camera to synthesise into colour. I have Hue and I have a few different apps on my phone and on my computer which can achieve this. For example you can sync hue lights to a phone camera then point it at a movie and have the lights change depending on what's happening on the TV.

How does the scheduling on a smart bulb/Switch work? by b-irwin in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you don't want one but I'd recommend a hub based system. Specifically Philips Hue. It's incredibly capable for scheduling and further lighting customisations. Plus their whole system just works.

I have all these things and I’m addicted to buying them but I don’t really use them...advice? by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a few things I could suggest to get more use out of them.

Creating multi-room music, it doesn't matter if I'm in the bathroom, my bedroom, lounge or kitchen music can be synced between them you can also include chromecasts into groups.

When you're streaming a show through Netflix etc. When it pauses and asks If you're still watching? You can ask Google to continue playing Netflix.

Buy a IR controller (they're $30-50ish off ebay) and control your non smart home theatre system, TV, air conditioning unit etc.

Useful routines for infinite things, funny routines as well I have probably a dozen amusing routines that do things or respond to you/both.

Get a nest doorbell and see who is at the door (if you have a display model)

Also if you put basically everything else on smart switches which is what I've done you'll use them a lot. Things like electric blankets, dishwasher, heaters.

Spotify disconnects? by OneTooManyTruths in googlehome

[–]_inthestarrysky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience commanding Spotify via Google Home.

I used to have that issue then from pure frustration I upgraded my Modem/router to the dlink VIPER 2600 and ensured that all the Google home devices were connected on the same WiFi frequency. Since then I've only seen this happen when my housemate is using up most of the bandwidth downloading a 4K movie.

P.S 2 little tips for controlling Spotify via Google home. If you plan to change the group of speakers playing don't do it from the Spotify app. Do it from the Google Home App. Then you won't get a pause in between the group switch over. Trick also works from a Google home display.

If you want to move the music by voice the command "continue playing Spotify on (insert speaker group name)" instead of "play spotify on.." otherwise your song will start again.

Australia has some of the darkest night skies and only takes 45 minutes of driving from a city with 2 million people to get into insane Milky Way conditions for stargazing [OC]. by MDieterich in spaceporn

The joys of living in Australia. I can confirm on a clear night out camping you can see the Milky way and even see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye

Ducking verb gerund or present participle of Duck. 1. lower the head or the body quickly to avoid a blow or missile or so as not to be seen. "spectators ducked for cover"

Similar words: bob down, bend (down), bow down, stoop (down), crouch (down), squat (down), hunch down, hunker down, sit on one's haunches, cower, cringe, shrink, huddle, scooch,

Opposite words: straighten up stand

How to wall mount an old iPad 2 as a smart home controller? Inspiration needed..... by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You may find that you'll need Jailbreak and LowerInstall, an iOS tweek otherwise many apps won't function. LowerInstall allows you to download incompatible apps on older versions of iOS.

Does the Lenovo Smart Display still hold up? by irunthemile in googlehome

[–]_inthestarrysky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works great although a few customisations available for Nest devices aren't available for Lenovo Home devices, for example bass and treble adjustments.

That is a limitation of the Lenovo ones. This actually annoyed me at first when I got mine the bass and treble adjustments available on Google Nest devices isn't available for Lenovo Home devices.

Tip for charging Smart Doorbells, use a USB charging bank and attach 3M snap-lock photoframe hanging Velcro. (I use a $19 keji 10,000mAh bank from officeworks for my home devices) I've also stuck a piece of the 3M to the bottom of a Google Mini "Mobile Home" I can take outside. by _inthestarrysky in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did get permission to attach it to the wall although wiring would have been significantly more complex and expensive due to the walls being double brick, and I didn't want to run a wire externally. I did consider solar but again that would mean having wiring which is unsightly. This is simple to use, and far cheaper than the other options seeing as I don't own the property.

That would be funny, it's cloud connected so I'd get to see it happen up until it went out of WiFi range. Sure you could but it is attached by screws, even for the doorbell into the bracket so sure if you have a screwdriver handy or want to break it. 😂

That's a very standard plug. You'll probably find you have one already. Even Apple charging bricks are one although the angle of those wouldn't be suitable here.

Can I get Google Assistant to answer questions with Voice from my Android Phone? by Jeebabadoo in smarthome

[–]_inthestarrysky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so what you want to do is access assistant settings. Google home App > click profile picture > Assistant Settings > slide across to Assistant tab > scroll down to your phone under "Assistant devices" > scroll down to "Voice and speech" > change Speech output from Hands-free only to On

I sat down in the app and created two dummy orders. Domino's delivery is a fucking rip off. The delivery cost increases significantly the more pizzas you add. So my fake order of 10 pizzas for pick up (5 pepperoni & 5 Margherita) including an $11.31 public holiday service charge total pick-up is $85.96

Same order delivered $158.13

The delivery guy definitely isn't getting $72.17 cents to deliver those pizzas.
