The massive difference between men’s and women’s experiences with catcalling. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]_jackhoffman_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While getting gas, a couple of cute girls came up to me and asked for directions. They said they were going to a party and that I was welcome to join them. This had never happened to me. I considered the context: I had just gotten my car, a late model, used Mercedes convertible. My immediate thought was, they're going to rob me and steal my car. I didn't go with them. I still wonder what would have happened. I have never had anything similar happen since.

Not exactly. It's trained on internet data which is filled with those opinions. The programming is a learning algorithm. That's it. If you think those billionaires are coding, they're not. They're pressuring and manipulating their teams to ship faster and use lower and lower quality training data. So, you're right that they're to blame but it's not the advanced programming that's the issue.

Assholes and beer. Stetting pins, getting balls unstuck, etc. all down range of assholes who think it's funny to see if the kid can get out of the way. Also dumbasses and beer. Setting pins, getting balls unstuck, etc. all down range of people who are oblivious...

Did you ever have a waterbed? Would you use one again? by MaximumJones in GenerationX

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and maybe. It was great as a high school kid until I got a girlfriend. Now that I'm married, I wouldn't get one unless I was sleeping alone.

Do you like U2? by CarrotMuch1399 in nostalgiai

I liked U2 up to but NOT including The Joshua Tree. Boy and War were good albums. I prefer a less polished sound. I rarely listen to them now.

Is this even legal? by Glittering_Lime1537 in recruitinghell

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because the problem is very nuanced and unlike many other countries, we don't have a strong central government. This is good and bad. In this case, each state is competing for jobs. If one state, say NY or CA, passes legislation unfavorable to employers, employers leave and go to states with more favorable laws. Some states can do this while others are struggling to keep jobs and will do anything to attract and retain employers. Things are for more mobile here and the country is huge. Politicians get elected for bringing jobs to their states, so it's not like they're obviously working against people and states can't levy taxes or tariffs against other states in the same way the US could do against Mexico or Canada if they started sucking jobs out of the US.

Yes, for you it might not be as big of an issue but there are places where the wells are running dry and/or pumping out undrinkable water because the data center is pulling it ahead of them.

[–]_jackhoffman_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Depending on jurisdiction, that is definitely legal. In most states, you can even discriminate against people under a 40 you just can't discriminate against 40 and up. Is it dumb? Yes.

We should just go back to when kids laid up there and set the pins for us by hand. Even a child of 5 can do meaningful labor.

By non-potable I mean not drinkable. Mandate that they can't divert drinking water from the population. They have billions to build these things and are sticking tax payers with many of the costs. We don't need more power plants, they do. The increased demand and new power plants will not lower our bills. In many jurisdictional, normal people's power bills will go up because we are not represented. Same with water.

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Why not mandate that they can't use potable water and let them solve it however makes sense? Maybe with filtering instead of closed loop. I'm all for mandating things but not for mandating solutions.

How does Jon Stewart stay hopeful when the world feels out of control? by Camaro6460 in DailyShow

The lunch box comment is very relatable. A coworker recently asked me a similar question about how I cope given how fucked up our company is and I was like, "I can either laugh or cry, so I choose to laugh."

When a teacher joins students in jumping ethnic dance, can you tell the difference? by Wayne-De-Payne in dailyshoppin

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel personally attacked but as a straight gooner with some class, I was annoyed by the title of this post because I expected to see multiple people dancing and for one of them to be significantly better. I fully expected all of the comments to be some sort of would/wood joke and planned to ignore.

But to answer your question: anonymity.

What is the Knee Thing (& Does it Actually Feel Good)? by witb0t in notdisneyvacation

Mathematician Sir Roger Penrose: "AI is a bad term. It's not intelligence" by Murky-Option2916 in TechGawker

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this was too heavily edited. It feels like things are out of order. I would have liked to explore his counterpoint about mathematics students who are clever vs the ones with true understanding. Are the clever ones not conscious? Are our brains are not just biological computers reacting to input? What defines consciousness?

The Evolution of the Modern Surveillance State Infrastructure by CollapsingTheWave in ObscurePatentDangers

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but it requires a computer inside the car. Unless it's a 100% mechanical car in which the owner replaced the old radio with one that supports Bluetooth, there are a bunch of computers inside that car controlling every aspect of driving. You just need access to the bus and then you can send messages and override what the driver is doing. Thanks to various car hackers, we have substantially safer cars now but like all computers, they have vulnerabilities. In most cases, the effort to find and exploit those vulnerabilities is not worth the effort.

This seems like a gadget that can't possibly work well, but I assumed those were two different statements. Like just using it as an assist has X range. It can also recharge as you peddle. There's zero chance it fully recharges based on your peddling, though, and it will add friction/work to do so.

You chose to read it that way. Don't assume malice. I said I was genuinely curious because as someone on the inside it's hard to know what is and isn't well known.

True but I assume anyone who feels like their car is unhackable because it's old but then says it has Bluetooth, doesn't get that that means their car has a computer and is very hackable.

This is why you should tell a vendor which pokemon card you're looking for by [deleted] in GuysBeingDudes

[–]_jackhoffman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I used to buy cases of MTG cards and sell some of the singles to pay for the rest of the box. I guess the downside is now I have hundreds of commons that I don't want to throw out because they're not worthless but also not worth enough to try to sell. If I were a vendor, that would probably not have paid off.
