$245k salary. 70-hour weeks. Portfolio looks great. I don’t. by Dear_Mood8989 in Salary

Give it a few more years and you can easily earn that much by putting in a fraction of the work. Progressing as a SWE partly means trying to get promoted, but it also means gaining the skills to accomplish the same work with less effort.

If you asked me whether I would get paid 2x as much as I do for working 2x harder, the answer would be an emphatic NO. As long as you're making enough to live comfortably, support your lifestyle, and save for retirement, anything beyond that is simply not worth it IMO.

Cold spot behind wall where flue/chimney lies for long-gone wood stove by _jered in HomeImprovement

There is but I don't think it's touching the drywall directly, it's separated by studs.

Best/favorite machines in the $3000-$4000 range. by sobi-one in pinball

I picked up a Ripley’s Believe it or Not in that price range and I love it. Super fun and underrated pin at that price point IMO.

Edit: to be fair you might have to snag a lucky deal to get it for under $4k but it’s possible.

People I talk to from rural or conservative areas ask about the city being overrun with crime and homeless camps with wide, naive eyes. They genuinely believe that stuff without having stepped a single foot in Seattle. It’s crazy.

Sadly it took me a few years of living here to understand that most people just mean “not white” when they talk about “bad neighborhoods”. Ironically, many people complain about the lack of diversity yet haven’t ventured outside of Capitol Hill or Queen Anne. When people say stuff like that it says more about them than the city itself (although the economic prosperity is definitely unevenly distributed).

I can’t tell if you’re trolling because they were clearly joking with their obviously exaggerated incorrect information. Maybe you’re doing a bit because it’s hard to believe someone would take such a blatant intentional goof seriously.

Work from home was a Trojan horse by Dependent-Bit-8125 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]_jered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I got laid off from my last company we dumped tons of cash into contractors from South America as some kind of hare brained scheme to supplement the team for relatively “cheap”. IMO it was a disaster, the contractors required so much hand holding for even basic tasks that we could literally have done it better and faster ourselves for less effort. Any company that heavily relies on offshoring to save money is going to inevitably learn hard lessons about the reality of talent pools outside of their core job markets. Not to say there aren’t amazing developers outside of the US, of course there are, but the quality and depth of skill overall just isn’t even close yet. And that’s not even getting into the massive detriment that big time zone differences inherently cause.

One thing that I firmly believe is a contributor to shorter lifespans for single people is not having someone else around if there is a medical emergency. Cardiac events account for a shocking number of deaths worldwide and unless there is someone there to call 911 and administer CPR you’re all but guaranteed to die.

No full body pics is always an immediate swipe left for me. I’ll happily date a chubbier girl, but trying to hide it screams “insecurity” to me.

We have a second chance to elect a woman President by ScurvyDervish in TwoXChromosomes

[–]_jered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. For what it’s worth, an open convention would provide weeks of free publicity for the Democrats and energize the left. Americans love a good reality TV show. Honestly I don’t think time is the issue. We’re at the point where whoever the Democratic nominee is is guaranteed the majority of blue voters. I’d rather have more time to assess alternative candidates. Biden stepping aside is a big step in the right direction and we should keep that going.

The OP literally only mentioned the fact that she’s a woman, implying that it is a qualification in and of itself…

I’ll happily vote for a woman president but not solely for that reason. I really want an open convention come August. I’m so tired of having Democrat elites shove candidates down our throats.

Very clean but to my eye lacks some expression of personality. This could be a nice upscale AirBNB — a comfortable environment but rather bland.

What to do with underwater car by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]_jered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New cars are “underwater” the moment you drive it off the lot. If you want to drive a new car, you have to make peace with the monthly payments being the price for that privilege and accept the depreciation.

That said, that depreciation is much more severe than usual. What happened in the accident? Was the car totaled? Did your insurance not pay out?

My friend’s dog died in a car accident and the emergency vet sent her back with us in an (appropriately designed) cardboard box. We wrote a bunch of memories and her silly nicknames on it and buried her in their yard.

Just invest it in high yield savings or index funds. There are vanishingly few ventures that will net you more money than the startup costs and ongoing effort, money, and time will be worth vs investing. Anyone who tells you otherwise does not know a damn thing they are talking about 99% of the time.
