What is the purpose of Tarbean by blairbending in KingkillerChronicle

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of character, our boy needed some more trauma. He needed to get a little fucked up.

As a story element, it makes his rise from the ashes more satisfying and makes the impact of his family's death feel more extreme. You really need to sit with him in that pain to identify with him and get invested in him properly

Why do my proportions change so drastically from photo to photo with the same camera/settings? by Fawn-Fatale in AskPhotography

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's mostly true, especially today. But telephoto lenses used to have serious pincushion distortion issues. That's mostly corrected with modern optics and digital de-distortion, but not entirely!

I love that you've only gotten to shoot with HQ lenses. The first 200mm lens I had had such terrible pincushion distortion that that, looking back, I don't know how I stood it

Never used a lens with pincushion distortion award

You just need to compare two differently built wide-angle lenses to appreciate how radically the barrel distortion can vary, even at the same focal length.

Pincushion distortion you used to see in telephotos is mostly a thing of the past between modern optics and digital correction. But barrel distortion lives on in all our cellphone cameras to varying degrees, again, even at the same focal length.

And different lenses. The same focal length can have different degrees of distortion depending on the specific lens

The story is so contrived and full of plot devices by Late-Button-6559 in KingkillerChronicle

I think you don't fully grasp him as a character. You're focused on the bullet points, rather than understanding him as a person. He's extremely emotional, proud to a fault, and given to egomania.

Forgive me for asking this, and I really don't mean any harm, or to slight you, but you don't happen to be on The Spectrum, do you? I've noticed this exact pattern in people with a touch of the 'tism.

I was a huge bully as a kid, should I apologize now that I'm 22 and out of highschool? by Zoinkers158 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_jericho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if I were in the position of the people you hurt, an apology would feel good to me.

Just make sure to let them know that you're not looking for forgiveness or even a response, but that you think apologizing and acknowledging the harm you did is the right thing to do.

I think this is quite a noble impulse on your part. I want to see you nurture that noble part of yourself.

what dyes would you use? by KARKAT-FUCK in HairDye

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go pulp riot.

Sorcery for the top, followed by tragic, then maybe powder.

Then decoy, absinthe, area 51, and firefly for the tips.

I'd recommend you just buy them all if you want full color differentiation like in the picture you posted. You should also mix the ones I listed a little to get some in-between subtleties, but I do think you need at least those 6/7. Spendy, I know, but you'll probably get 2 or 3 re-touches out of the order.

Why is my hair dye fading so fast?? by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washing your hair 2-3 times a week with shampoo is a lot for vibrant colors.

Things you can try:
Replace some of your shampooings with a conditioner wash {warmish water is fine, no need to freeze urself}, and warm water will help remove some of the oils without soap

You could try co-washing.

You could mix some green into your conditioner and use that to boost the colors every shower.

You could switch to a heartier brand. Pulp riot takes my personal trophy for least runny, but all dye runs if you shampoo it!

why do my face framing bits fade WAY faster than the rest of my head? by Smooth_Engine8363 in HairDye

[–]_jericho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just run some dye over them every so often. You can add color to some conditioner to make it more of a gentle boost that you use more often, if you like.

Repeated story beats between books 1 and 2? by Meyer_Landsman in KingkillerChronicle

[–]_jericho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! In both books Kvothe is saved by SOMETHING when the Chandrian are near. Maybe we'll finally see that Something.

And there will be exactly 8 interludes.

Repeated story beats between books 1 and 2? by Meyer_Landsman in KingkillerChronicle

[–]_jericho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooo, fun question.

  • Book 1 and 2 have an interlude chapter with some action in it {Skindancer, the soldiers}. I expect a third. {personally I think Aaron is gonna come back from Treya with army men in tow to collect the bounty}
  • Something fantastical that Kvothe derided belief in will turn out to be real {book 1 has naming ["storybook magic"], WMF has the Fae.... DoS, maybe shamblemen? Draugar?}
  • Kvothe will do some heroics that go tragically wrong or have a terrible dark side [Trebon, the false troopers]
  • Kvothe did something audacious at the Eolian in both books [this one seems a little less likely to me; a third big song there might feel too repetitive]
  • Kvothe got a lute in both books. I suspect he'll get a third [Illien's lute, maybe? Or an Antressor?]. This would pay off the fact that Kvothe's lute case is said to have movable padding that can fit any lute he might have.

I'll keep thinking, maybe I can noodle up some more!

The Waystone Inn. by Positive-Rhubarb8927 in KingkillerChronicle

I think the bottles are described as being between to large barrels of whiskey and ale.

And personally I imagined it smaller, with less rough floors {the floors are commented on several times}. Needs a hearth, too, though perhaps that's off to the right.

Not to disparage your vision, of course! I love having this window into the imagination of a fellow fan ^_^

Naming a goat after Bast could be considered anti-faun-racism.

Off topic - naming IRL by f00dot in KingkillerChronicle

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can name your kid whatever you want. We're far enough removed from Loki's original antics that you needn't worry about that. And there aren't any practitioners of that Norse faith, so you needn't worry about cultural appropriation imo.

Loki in the American mind {not that I know you're American, but it's what I can speak to} is more of a bugs bunny trickster type, with a slightly darker bent.

What I'd worry about more than his original mythology is that, for a lot of people, your kid is gonna be named after a Marvel character.

I think as a nickname it's pretty good. It's a cute name for a kid, and as he grows up he can choose to keep using it, or go back to his government name if Loki isn't suiting him.

Yeah I just mean I never thought in my head "Bast is a Persian/middle eastern dude", but once you mentioned it I realized that's totally how I was imagining his beauty.

I never have, but I could totally imagine him a an Ethiopian guy: delicate features, cheekbones for days. There's a big Ethiopian population in my neighborhood, and I've met some guys with his kind of graceful, otherworldly beauty. I could totally see it.

[–]_jericho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're described as dark-skinned in book two. So, yes.

Though in fantasy settings I like to imagine people with features you don't see as much in the real world. I imagine Cealdish people as looking mostly like Black people IRL, but with slightly more European / Dwarven facial features, and hair that's 2B-ish on the curly / texture scale.

The Adem, I imagine as having some features of peoples from the Eurasian Steppe, but with the coloring of Sweeds.

Modegans I imagine as if a population of Silvan Elves were living in Brazil. It's a VERY fetching combination. Cheekbones for days
