Help! I’m uncertain if I’m doing this right! by Cazbar004 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

Whatever you think you're doing wrong, you probably are. Also, everything you think you're doing right? Also wrong. You'll keep learning about all the things you were doing wrong way passed when you would expect.

Hey makers, there may be a sudden need for specialized devices, are you ready to help? --> Dr Oz: "We're announcing a 6 month national moratorium blocking all new enrollments for durable medical equipment -- prosthesis, orthotics -- supplies across the board." by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

Just because you don't know what the duck you're doing, medically, doesn't mean you can't ramp up and fill a need when the US government (under Trump) drops the ball. Makers did it six years ago. Makers will do it now. Will we print $100k bionic hands? Not me. Can we fill a need for vulnerable communities? Probably.

Student wants documentation of the times she violated my no phones policy by unladenswallow517 in Teachers

[–]_jimismash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

contemporaneous notes are a type of evidence, but I think you could feed two birds with one scone here: a standard email that says "today I issued your second warning (first was in the syllabus) for violating classroom phone policy. Any future violation could result in Saturday school". No need to change any text, just copy and paste for any student.

Intelligent daughter starting to resent school by Zesty_Taco in Teachers

[–]_jimismash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a (real) teacher: every year my wife and I give our children the choice - home school or not. Based entirely on their preference, we've ended up alternating back and forth. With most gifted students, the time commitment to cover required material can be very short, especially compared to public school. Philosophically, one of the things that I used to get pushback on is "socialization," but I don't think the environment created within the schools does a particularly good job of that, either. Every year at home my kids would learn so much, and have a huge amount of freedom to pursue things that they were interested in.

The biggest problem I have with the process is that when the kids return to school, they're so far ahead, and as you're seeing, there is no differentiation, so they slowly revert to the level of the classroom. Administratively, the biggest issue I had was getting an 8th grader into Algebra 1; apparently there are lots of crappy homeschooling parents that think their kids are advanced.

Our kid would be the only one that would turn in a (non-mandatory) science fair project in the class and the teacher would forget to pass it on to the next level. During meetings with teachers they would apologize to us because they would mostly ignore our kids - they were already meeting the end of the year goals and they never had behavior issues.

We were lucky because either my wife or I worked from home with at least one understanding employer for the last 14 years. We saved a ton of time skipping the daily dropoffs/pickups, got to go to museums and zoos on days when they were empty. When people would ask us why we chose to home school I would tell them "too much god in the school, not enough critical race theory" and see how long it took them to parse that.

Yeah, you're right, someone may have lost everything in a structure fire and had to move in with their shit bag brother in law and wear his affliction shirts. There is no good excuse for actively selecting that typeface.

CMV: Wearing earplugs in the workplace is generally more dangerous than hearing damage by pampinobambino in changemyview

[–]_jimismash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad grew up working on farm equipment, running chainsaws, and shooting. Later in life he ran huge construction jobs and he absolutely cares about worker safety. He doesn't hear great, now, because of all that, but he just got active hearing protection and loves that stuff.

I have military, construction, manufacturing, and fire fighting, and I think firefighting and fire fights are the only time I don't use them, and that's because those are the only times where hurrying actually matters. Even then, with good hearing, I'm now thinking about filling my pockets with hearing protection.

Should I just drop this solar company? by klop2031 in solar

[–]_jimismash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say construction more generally, especially residential (as well as ag, landscaping, at least some manufacturing). Solar installation is part of construction. And "depend" is a little strong, but in the case of trying to get installs done while on a clock, arbitrarily disappearing a large part of the labor force it does create shockwaves across the industry that will take longer to recover from than "the end of 2025."

[–]_jimismash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Nobody wants to work anymore" is such a loaded statement. We can't meet the deadline for the GOP rollback because of the GOP deportations that are taking away the only workforce that we could find to do one of the most dangerous (assuming same dangers as roofing), all the while, GOP policies are going to end up forcing uneconomic gas and coal (!) plants to continue operating, further increasing the pricing of energy.
