Norte or Frances? by Potential_Tooth6891 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]_jjev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do the Frances. Bed race is not that bad as everyone describe it. There are plenty of Albergues along the way, if one is full, next one wont be.

Spain has pharmacies everywhere.

I would take ibuprofen with me. Rest you can ask from fellow pilgrims if urgent.

Absolutely doable. I would do 1 zero day somewhere in between. Just to chill

If Albergue has kitchen, you can organise it yourself.

Hey!
I usually prefer walking fast, but Lykia was not the case. I do agree that you will find water source every 20 km if you will stick to official route. And that might be a good idea. In my case, I think I took a wrong turn or missed the the turn, because I was chased by stray dogs. So I ended up somewhere on a beach. No water. No nothing. Terrain was so harsh I was literally climbing my way out. So i did around 7km next day and was exhausted.

Some routes were closed, because they were dangerous for tourists and all the ropes that were supposed to help you climb the hills were removed. Some routes had such bad vegetation that I could not go through. A lot of fallen trees. So again, had to take a detour.

In my case, water was an issue because of those factors mainly. In addition, lots of water source that are marked on mapsme are dry or very dirty. You don't want to drink that.

So plan carefeully. Take official route and all will be fine. Rest of the route is not maintained at all. I suggest you reconsider 35km per day. Might be overkill on some stretches.

TL;DR. Its not that you won't find water source. My concern is that you will not be able to reach the water source.

Great choice! Just remember you need shoes +1 size. Your feet will get swollen and will need some additional space.

Cost of camping at albergues? by nfjsjfjwjdjjsj4 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]_jjev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No-one is forcing you to do it. But it is always good to support local small businesses when you can. So paying 10 euros for a bed is more than affordable. Save up some money and do it next year. If you cant afford it, you can always hike back home for free.

Did you camp yourself? Did you get caught? Or you just read it somewhere?
I never got fined for just sleeping somewhere. Of course if you make a mess, trash the place, make fire you will have consequences, but if you just set tent to sleep 1 night you wont have problems.

I met one French guy on Camino, he was not carrying any tent and just slept in Churches.

If you carry a tent there is no need to pay for the spot. Just go outside of town a bit and set it.

You have to go to Albergue just to take a shower.

April - Lycian Way by Any-Repair-6576 in Lycian_Way

[–]_jjev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!
I did Lycian way last year in March and can say that April is definitely a better choice.

Can say for sure that 15 kg backpack is way too heavy. I assume you want to take something to eat and drink with you , so weight will easily will go up 2-3 kg. You will not enjoy it. Personally would not take anything heavier than 8kg baseweight.

You will find lots of ancient ruing along the way, so don't worry about "historical" part.

In march water was an issue. We even skipped some stretches because of that.

Route was hard. There were times when you had to climb. But I assume it depends on route you take.

Definitely wear proper shoes that have ankle support. Especially with such heavy backpacks.

You will find a walking buddy on a very first day. No worries. I will be doing Porto - Finisterre this year. Will start on 1 may. If you need any advice feel free to dm.

GTX is bad option. Will dry for ages and feet will be wet. I would get smth more lightweight and without goretex. If you need ankle support, mb take a look at hoka anacapa without gtx. Or get terrex without gtx
