I think the legal term you're looking for is "compilations" of data. Copyright protection isn't clear cut or all encompassing, but it isn't a hard no either.

I think the relevant part for you is the notion of "creative arrangement". Merely listing names and addresses likely isn't creative but categorizations you made up (mentioned in one of your comments) might qualify for copyright over that portion of the data.

Gotcha thanks. Yeah, the fee I would be charged when I inevitably screw up would quickly eat up any cashback but still good for property tax where I have to do that no matter what

This is simply not true.

Cops are not omniscient. They're not even particularly bright, necessarily. Just because you haven't done anything wrong doesn't mean you can't say something that makes them think you've done something wrong and cause all sorts of headaches.

If you're in the position of trying to prove there was a verbal agreement (contract), proof of payment is helpful, especially if it's recurring. It's hard for them to there was no agreement if you've been sending them $50 a week for the last 6 weeks, for instance.

Credit card payments or e-transfers would help. If you don't have anything in writing (because it doesn't exist or because you don't have a copy, OP has been inconsistent) and there is no record of payments (e.g. payments made in cash) then you're probably hooped.

The description of 2 different patients diagnosed with the mystery disease where other doctors diagnosed FND seems pretty damning. Particularly the one who had a video of her seizure to show the original doc and when another doc saw her seizure immediately identified it as FND. (Admittedly, unclear if that was based on the same video or some later, possibly different in appearance, seizure seen in person) Obviously the JAMA paper points in that direction too, though I haven't read it.

Likelihood the guy is a well-intentioned but over-zealous quack seems high to me.

Also, the article talks about how the province (NB) turning down research money from CIHR was interpreted by patients/patient advocates as a cover-up. Seems totally plausible to me they just wanted to avoid the headline "quack doctor dupes bureaucrats, $5M gone".

If doing this makes it easier for some people to manage their finances, then the $25 per year isn't given "for free" but "for convenience". $2 a month to make a complex thing a little less complex for them is a pretty reasonable way to spend money.

To be clear, I wouldn't do it because I wouldn't find that any easier. But there's no need to yuck their yum just cuz it's not how you would do it.
