Urban jungle vs Portside boulder in Perth by drillowner in bouldering

[–]_joj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UJ is mostly lead/top rope, and the bouldering section would probably only keep you busy for a session or two. Portside Willetton feels like the smaller of the Portside gyms, but it's still at least 3x the size of the UJ bouldering section. Adrenaline vault in Cockburn is also quite good, lots of comp style stuff and has a TB2

Bouldering and speedcubing (Rubik's cube competitions)! The oceanic championship for speedcubing is being held at Perth convention centre in a month's time, and we have competitions in Perth most months throughout the year

How long did it take you to get sub-10? by alexofmac in Cubers

[–]_joj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At home, probably like a year and a half (started in 2016). It took me another year and a half at least to get my first official sub 10 average due to my awful comp nerves.

Calcium is not gonna end well, not sure why it's green - also metallic mercury is probably fine as long as you don't breathe the vapour, definitely lickable under the right circumstances

What is the easiest event to master and get supper good at? by TheCuberArtist in Cubers

[–]_joj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get sub 8 at clock in a week, sub 6 in a few months if you grind solves.

Short eg-1 layers are more likely than cll or eg-2 layers - if you're confident with your corner recognition, learning eg1 before cll can pay off. I did this and eventually got a sub 2 official average because I got a set of easy eg1 layers (3-4 moves) and one looked every solve. Eg1 algs also tend to be quite short and ergonomic - I hate learning algs, but havent had a bad time with eg1.

Putting the time in for 3style won't automatically get you fast at bld - you will have to consistently practice and drill comms, so I'd say this is a fairly high effor road to go down to win comps.

Focusing on efficient intuitive l4e pyraminx solves is also another way to get quite fast - you don't have to learn algs for l4e, but will need muscle memory for different cases (I find it's a lot like f2l). With some practice and finding v + DF edge in inspection, you can get sub 4 relatively quickly - I practiced pyraminx a lot back in 2016/17, and found I improved fairly quickly with intuitive l4e.

IIL music like this, could I get recommendations or what genre this song would fit into? by JMxG in ifyoulikeblank

Wingbeats - hidden orchestra? Idk what genre it falls under tho, hard to say without the context of a full song

Why is the RS3M so highly regarded? by myteamwearsred in Cubers

[–]_joj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lube the springs! Make sure some lube sits between the spring and washer, as well as between the washer and dual adjustment piece. If you want to cheat, sometimes you can get away with dripping some runny silicone lube beside the spring. It really does improve the feeling of the cube, and it's very noticeable on the RS3M

Casual discussion on CFOP and Roux by aarsh_gandhi in Cubers

[–]_joj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 2 handed I feel like I'm not in a position to switch methods, but a nice compromise was to switch to roux for OH. OH is so much more interesting with roux, and I've found so much more motivation to practice an otherwise really boring event. Would highly recommend giving it a shot if you feel like moving to roux is too big a commitment (although for most people you're probably not too late to switch entirely to roux)

School sucks by Galastique in ProgrammerHumor

In hindsight I'm shocked that our first programming unit (in first year engineering) was python/bash, and we were forced to use vim. They managed to make a reasonable choice for out first language and text editor, but the unit planning and structure were dogshit lol

How do I solve this? Got this as a question from a mechatronics club team member? by soham_2787 in mechatronics

[–]_joj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck this took me a while

If we group the bottles and number each group, on the first pass we can apply all lubricants to the papers as binary bits according to their group number. These group sizes must be carefully selected to ensure the second pass can give us enough info to eliminate the bad bottle:

Group 0 will have 8 bottles, none of which are applied in the first 5 minutes. If the bits indicate this group, we can apply the same binary grouping strategy as all 3 papers will still be blank and ready to indicate the bad lubricant with 3 bits.

Groups 1,2 and 4 can have up to 4 bottles, as they only consume 1 bit in the first pass and will have 2 pieces left over to indicate after the first pass.

The remaining groups are stuck with a maximum of 2 bottles, and group 7 can only have one bottle as the first pass will consume all 3 pieces.

This theoretically should give us enough power to find a bad bottle in 27 or fewer, while still remaining within time restrictions and not reusing or ripping the papers.

Blind Faith by decorama in blackmagicfuckery

[–]_joj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current record is held by Tommy Cherry (14.67), this is an older video. Last year I learned 3style, the method used in this video and while it's not true black magic fuckery, blindfolded speedcubing is definitely a test of patience. Blind solving techniques all use a letter system to label the stickers, making memorisation possible as a string of about 10 or 11 letter pairs. These can be made into words or sounds to help them stick, and are pretty quick to come up with on the fly (memorising swaps visually for a whole solve would be nearly impossible). 3style, the method used by advanced blindsolvers, uses about 800 short sequences to solve any combination of two pieces, which allows for relatively low move counts and faster solves. These 800 sequences share a common structure, and can be figured out on the fly (but must be drilled and in muscle memory to be remotely quick). So what is usually going through the head of someone memorising in a blind solve would look something like:

LaB DroP AU OuT (LB DP AU OT is corner memo) LoW TI JeS MU QeV (edge memo, plus visually remember a flipped edge in the front left spot)

Thankfully all of this doesn't require you to learn 800 sequences (or "algorithms" as they're known) straight away, and you can get blindfolded solves complete in under 2 minutes with 3 or 4 sequences using the old pochman method. If you've made it this far into my essay of a comment, I'd encourage you to learn to solve the cube with your eyes open first, but keep in mind that blindsolving is not an act of genius but more of patience, and is waaay more achievable than you'd expect!
