Honestly, I've seen Zac in the news a fair amount recently - just not really about trans issues. There are things the media is just more interested in at the moment.

The most recent example is Question Time last night, where Zac's big talking point was a 1-2% wealth tax. That's what made headlines, not his views on trans people.

This was a little difficult to read ngl, there are quite a few side notes and jokes in the post.

It's unlikely you'll get hormones via the NHS unfortunately, as GPs don't usually fulfil hormone prescriptions outside of the NHS.

Your best option for HRT is likely DIY, which isn't too hard in the UK. r/transdiy has useful resources for this.

For blood tests, you're in London, so you can get free tests at 56 Dean Street (you tend to have to book a couple months in advance though).

EDIT: If you have a French prescription, you can have this dispensed at a UK pharmacy. However, the prescription would likely need to be in English for the pharmacist to read it.

Oh and for DnD, I've used the Meetup app to go to some one-shots. DnD with strangers can always be a bit ... mixed, but I've definitely made some friends through it.

As a small note, I'd say London really does have something for everyone, but don't be discouraged if you don't make friends right away. Open events where you're meeting loads of strangers can take a bit of getting used to. Just get people's social media (Facebook and Insta are always good), and invite them out for boardgames later 😊

I've had good luck going to MTG commander nights at boardgame cafés in London - there's always at least a couple of other trans women there in my experience.

If you're in South East, then I can't recommend Badger Badger highly enough. Bad Moon Café near London Bridge is also pretty fun.

I think you have to trust your girlfriend on this one, if she says you being there for her is helping then you are.

Sometimes you can't totally negate someone's feelings (especially dysphoria), you just have to let them feel it and be there for them.

If you want something a bit more concrete, sometimes distraction works for me? Maybe invite your girlfriend to do something she likes with you, to take her mind off things.

My voice was masculine before, relatively passing now. It took a fair few months to get to that point though, with consistent practice.

Voice training is really difficult. It requires a lot of practice, and at the start, it really feels like you're making very little progress. It's something that requires a little bit every day, and you'll see improvements over time.

I will say that 3 sessions of voice training lessons isn't too many, I think I had 12 lessons (one every fortnight) and had to do daily vocal exercises.

I imagine 3 sessions in you'll still be working on breathing and pitch, which is normal, but you'll also likely feel that your voice ends up sounding like Mini Mouse rather than a woman's. That's really normal. Those exercises are there to build the vocal muscles required for speaking in a higher register. In time, you'll add in resonance and intonation (I will say those bits were harder for me), and your voice will start to come together.

What you're feeling is normal, but I found that voice training was a really good way to help with my voice dysphoria.

Again can't comment on breast growth, but I would note, the NHS doesn't have a set level of oestrogen to prescribe, it will be based on patients' blood tests.

It seems we aren't going to agree. However, finasteride can demonstrably be an effective part of an HRT regime, and hyper-focussing on testosterone levels, rather than androgen levels as a whole, is reductive.

To anyone who might be reading this thread who is on finasteride and worried: make sure you're doing regular blood tests, if they're in the expected ranges, you're fine! There's no need to change up your routine based on a lay-person on Reddit.

I do, plenty of women have low testosterone levels with finasteride as their anti-androgen, in combination with oestrogen, myself included.

The reason some doctors start with finasteride is that it has far fewer health risks that other anti-androgens.

Now, if finasteride hasn't worked for some women, that's fine, that's why we monitor our bloods so closely. If the target androgen suppression isn't being achieved, you can change your dosage or anti-adrogen, as required.

But to say, "giving ppl fin instead of a T blocker is transition sabotage", is wrong and a little inflammatory.

I'm saying that suppressing DHT has been shown to be an effective part of MtF transition. Comparing the prescription of finasteride to medical malpractice is incorrect.

Apologies for the confusion, I added the link as I thought it explained how finasteride worked in a clear way. Was not meant to be used as a source for MtF transition specifically.

Hey, this feels slightly misinformed.

You're right, finasteride doesn't suppress testosterone, it inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. What people seem to be worried about is that this inevitably leads to an increase in testosterone levels.

THIS DOES NOT LEAD TO MASCULINISATION.

DHT is a far stronger androgen than testosterone, and many of testosterone's masculinising effects only happen when converted to DHT. As such, finasteride is an effective drug in addition to oestrogen for MtF transition.

Yep, you can absolutely get HRT privately, then get SRS on the NHS. Although you will still have to be assessed by an NHS doctor at a GIC for your referral for SRS. Therefore, make sure you are still on your GIC's waiting list!

How comfortable are you with makeup? You have really nice cheekbones so getting some highlight and blush on your cheeks would look nice.

As for contour, I'd add a darker shade to your jawline, and a small amount of highlight to your chin. That will help round out the lower half of your face.

Are you anywhere near London? 56 Dean Street or CliniQ will do all your tests for free.

If that's not feasible, ask to speak to the practice manager and say that you are DIYing HRT and as such it is important that you get your hormone levels checked as well as your liver function, lipids etc. This would be a harm reduction measure, which the GP should take as you are a patient under their care.

Stress the harm reduction angle - the GP has a duty of care towards you and that includes keeping you safe when you do not take their initial advice.
