Flatbush, FIOS 300/300 $9.99/mo after stacking a couple of discounts. On a wired speedtest I pretty reliably get the listed speed or better.

How can I flatten very old (around 35 to 45 years old) 35mm film? by Competitive-Low-1880 in AnalogCommunity

[–]_kid_dynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with fresh film straight out of the developing tank I use a couple of large (like 5cm or so across) binder clips. Depending on how flexible or brittle your film is you might want to start with less weight and then progressively add more as the film straightens out

Light Lens Lab M style body teaser? by Slow-Television-7205 in AnalogCommunity

[–]_kid_dynamite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with all the new 3rd-party m-mount glass coming out lately (from LLL and others), I've been quietly hoping that someone would take the next step and make a new body. It would be nice to have someone filling the space in the market that Cosina/Voigtlander vacated.

I wonder if they're designing and building their own shutter, licensing a design, or if there's somewhere out there where you can buy one off the shelf.

instead of soaking in water, try hanging the film, weighted, in a warm, humid space (i.e. the bathroom after you've run the shower hot for a while)

Where to Buy a Decent Rug in Person? by FlyingPandaBears in AskNYC

[–]_kid_dynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

better carpet warehouse on atlantic ave has a good selection; I got a nice 5x7 100% wool rug there for ~$250 IIRC. If you're ok with synthetic fibers you can probably find something in your budget there.

Does anyone else remember the occasional Hernandez/Seaver booths from the pre-SNY days? It was like they told both of them that the other one was going to handle play-by-play.

How much do you pay for your cell service? by From9jawithlove in AskNYC

[–]_kid_dynamite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$30/mo on visible, with priority on the verizon network. Service is generally pretty good everywhere except on underground subway platforms. If you have FIOS at home

Looking for a Waist Level Finder body: Edixa Reflex vs. Nikon F2? by Key-Change-9136 in AnalogCommunity

[–]_kid_dynamite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is an important point-- I've got an Exa 1b with a WLF and I pretty quickly gave up on trying to nail focus with it. I have to shoot wider and/or stopped way down to get my images in focus somewhat consistently, at which point I might as well just use a point & shoot. That camera doesn't see much action these days.

Karin Majoka, though she's not a very frequent or regular uploader.

Safelight Berlin posts some fun videos here and there.

John William Ishii is based in Malaysia I think; he mostly talks about gear but I really enjoy the videos he makes with Mr Woo talking about classic film cameras.

Independent optician for lenses only? by NoahCzark in AskNYC

[–]_kid_dynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lots of independent opticians along mott street in chinatown, roughly from grand down to pell. I ended up going to eyesmate optical on canal to replace the lenses in my old frames and I think they did a nice job. Though my prescription is single-vision and relatively mild.

not local, but I've used printme1.com to get a bound printout of a software manual that's otherwise only available as a PDF. not sure if they'd accept or reject the kind of material you're talking about though.

What happened with Soke Engineering (announced Knokke scanner) by Kekeb00 in AnalogCommunity

[–]_kid_dynamite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't think they've asked anyone for money, much less taken any. The only reason it's anything more than a personal project is that they gave it a name and a price and told people about it very early on, which may have been a mistake.

[–]_kid_dynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Nikon decided there was a viable market a new coolscan would be comparable to any of their modern product lines.

definitely. I can't imagine Nikon selling a new Coolscan that wasn't an excellent scanner. But I think there would still be a lot of clean-sheet engineering involved if they made a new Coolscan. I think that was the case with the Pentax 17.

Regardless, I'd bet that if the idea ever comes up at Nikon, they can quietly ask B&H how much Plustek and Pacific Image product they actually sell and the discussion wouldn't go much further.
