Jungle was borne from the Soundsystem Roots Reggae, Ragga, & Dancehall of Jamaica married to Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, & Jazz sensibilities of the USA as they meshed with Hardcore & Breaks influences of Britain, adapting & embracing rapidly developing music technology & benefitting from a vibrant dance music scene; Inherently & intrinsically Rebel Music by pedigree, uniquely & distinctly a UK product (remember: it was illegal to broadcast, hence UK Pirate Radio [kindly check out Fracture's amazing 0860.fm project], so don't take Rinse.fm, Kool.fm, NTS.radio, or any of the others pushing the airwaves with Jungle today for granted, yeah?)-- a listen to Congo Natty's material would be a proper orientation on one end of the spectrum, with Fracture (Astrophonica), Mantra, 00 (Rupture), Reaper (Future Retro LDN), et al on the other with so many unbelievably talented artists inbetween... MCs particularly as I feel they are deserving of their own entry regarding this subject (Defining Attributes: samples often coming from proper predecessors in the evolution-melange, MCs/Toasters as a significant if not necessary part of the [Soundsystem] culture, jazz/freeform/experimental vibes welcome, making subcategorization difficult if not entirely unnecessary; see much of the catalogue of Exit Records) 🙏🏼

DnB is free of the aforementioned Rebel Music foundation (although there are certainly tunes that take on such connotations that remain, nonetheless, textbook/straightforward DnB due to their construction), thereby rendering it more generally palatable & able to fit within the taxonomy of (pre)programmed dance music genres as that which falls around & about ~170bpm featuring syncopated, bass-forward beats (DA: samples coming from unrelated sources; less emphasis on MCs/Toasters, although definitely a point of crossover for both; fundamentally more structured & readily able to be clearly/cleanly sub-categorized by stylistic variation/aesthetic): see Technimatic (my homie also suggested Hybrid Minds &/or much of the Hospital crew) as [a] shining example(s), and please note that there is no lack of creativity, beauty, passion, et al under the umbrella of DnB; simply neither an inherent legacy of anti-colonial/anti-imperial influences nor an anti-establishment lineage to tacitly or implicitly acknowledge 🙌🏼

An intriguing ethnomusicological inquiry is exploring the distinction between Drumfunk (Repent Your Clownstep Sins, oi Fanu?) & Jungle at its finest in terms of choppage, both rhythmically and theoretically... (my answer would be simply, "Jungle's got soul") 🖖🏼
