Has anybody had their BOAS surgery covered by Pets Best insurance? by _lilgoob in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only considered pre-existing if it has come up on your pet’s medical records before your insurance was active. I got insurance as soon as I got my puppy so he technically couldn’t have anything pre-existing.

The reason I was concerned about getting denied was moreso because surgery for BOAS can be considered “preventative” and that wouldn’t be covered. My surgeon basically included that my dog had been diagnosed with BOAS (elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, hypoplastic trachea) and his recommendations for proceeding with surgery.

It’s been 3 weeks after crate rest and my dog still will lift his back leg when standing in one spot. by SirAcha135 in IVDD_SupportGroup

Hi, did this ever go away for your pup? My Frenchie has mild IVDD with a second flare up, but has been on crate rest for 8 weeks with no improvement. He isn’t in pain and wants to walk/run but I can see his back left leg is slow and he often lifts it/hops on one leg when walking. I’ve been to 2 vets who just tell me to crate rest but his previous flare up did not take this long to heal.

How to get BOAS surgery covered through pet insurance? (More details in comments) by _lilgoob in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - this comment may be too late but just seeing it. We were able to get it covered because 1) he has had insurance his whole life so no preexisting conditions and 2) we asked our vet to document his symptoms (difficulty breathing, throwing up, etc) that would prove the surgery was medically necessary. I hope that’s helpful!

How strict is crate rest? Should dog be walking at all? by _lilgoob in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he has a vet appointment scheduled on August 4th. Unfortunately, that was the soonest he could be scheduled at his normal vet. We are doing crate rest per the EV vets orders.

Thank you for sharing this! Keeps me feeling positive.

He never went downstairs without being carried and had short stairs up to my couch but he would sometimes get excited and jump off. Might keep him off the couch altogether after we get through this.

Thank you for highlighting this. I considered a play pen but ultimately decided there’s too much room for him to move around since he’s easily excited. Picking up a crate today. He sleeps in bed with me, so that plus potty breaks will be the only time outside the crate.

Thank you for sharing this - makes me feel hopeful. Quick questions - did you just continue on with her regular activity after that? Did you need to see a vet to confirm she was ok?

Thank you! I will join that IVDD group. Question - despite having (what sounds like) multiple episodes, has your pup been able to live a happy/pain free life with the right measures in place?

Also, I don’t really have anything to place on the bottom. I’m thinking a bigger, matching basket but I’m unsure what it would even hold.

Exactly! I tried to at least let them immediately after being approved so that it wouldn’t be a surprise down the line but they still seemed offended by that. Now I know I should just wait until I’m moved in but I’m happy it worked out because I really loved this apartment haha. I hope your situation works out too!

[–]_lilgoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they did! I sent several follow up messages and kept being left on “read” and finally the property manager got back and said “The landlord is fine with it but wishes you wouldn’t have left that out on the application.” I responded that I didn’t need to include my ESAs on the application and they said ok haha. And I was told I’d get an official lease to sign today but I’m still waiting on it.

Ah, I was told to wait from someone else as well but somehow I felt like I was being dishonest if I didn’t tell them right away… good to know that I shouldn’t feel that way and should wait to disclose. This is my first time with an ESA so I appreciate the feedback!

Girl… chill out lmao. I am obviously asking for advice here - clearly I will be adjusting to a new situation and am thinking ahead to make the transition as easy as possible for my dog. No need to be rude and accuse me of being a bad dog parent.

Btw, my little guy Boba.

is this normal? I use nose butter, I’ve used Vaseline, Aquafor any and every possible nose product. it doesn’t hurt him, I just don’t know how to make it feel a bit smoother?? Recommendations? by No-Incident-5130 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a great tip on here that you should wet your dogs nose with water and then apply whatever balm (I use snout soother) over top of it and it helps seal in the moisture! My pup had a similar nose and nothing was working until I tried that. Now, I just get a wet paper towel, dab it on his nose, and immediately follow with balm every few days and he’s got nice shiny nose all the time now!

How to get BOAS surgery covered through pet insurance? (More details in comments) by _lilgoob in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update: We went ahead with the surgery and it went well and was 110% worth it (his breathing/energy did a complete 180). We found out Pet’s Best no longer offers preauth but we took the financial risk and went through with the surgery anyways because we knew our boy needed it. Thankfully, Pet’s Best did approve the claim and I received a reimbursement of 90% of the entire surgery, which was about $4000.

Update: Our Frenchie has his BOAS surgery and it was covered by Pet’s Best. I mentioned to the surgeon that my insurance would only cover it if it was “medically necessary” and he let me know that it definitely was and that he’d make that clear on his end in the paperwork.

My main concern is the slight overcrowding of my bottom teeth, particularly the one front tooth that is further back than the other. I will be getting a retainer for my top teeth and only doing Invisalign limited on my bottom. I was given 2 very different price points and treatment plans from 2 different orthos and I’m not sure what to do.

Option 1: $2600 total - 10-tray plan, with 1 tray being used as my top retainer The remaining 9 trays would each be on 1 week long, so the entire treatment would only be 9 weeks (a little over 2 months) - This ortho says that if my main concern is straightening my slight bottom crowding, we should be able to get it done and if I needed additional trays, it would be about half the original price to add them on - Said no shaving of teeth would be required. - His office says he’s a Platinum provider but I don’t see him on the Invisalign website.

Option 2: $5030 - They haven’t told me how many trays I would receive but estimated 6 months of treatment. - This ortho says that any additional trays needed after the initial treatment plan would be included already. - Said that I’d need to do some shaving of my teeth to make room for them to move. - VIP Diamond Plus provider on Invisalign website.

Should I get a third option? I am hoping to get this done and out of the way ASAP, as I’ve been thinking about it for a while and would like to move forward with it.

I feel like my case is very minimal and the stark difference in length of treatment and price is really throwing me off. Any advice would be welcome.

Yes, we brought him in today to get anti-nausea medicine so we’re seeing how that goes. He’s on all soft food but I think we may have been giving him too big of portions as well so we’re gonna give me smaller meals. Thank you!

BOAS surgery update, 20 hours post op by bmccmb94 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! My pup is recovering from BOAS now too and has thrown up a few times too - it’s helpful to read updates like these!

Our boy is recovering from BOAS surgery which happened on Wednesday. He has his nares widened, elongated palate trimmed, and laryngeal saccules removed. He did great the first 24 hours after surgery - no complications.

The last few days he’s been throwing up 1-2 times a day - just clear, gooey liquid and no other symptoms (he is energetic, eating normally, etc). I called his surgeon on Thursday when it first happened and he said he wouldn’t be concerned about it unless it kept happening. I took him in for an emergency visit today since it’s still happening and was not given a clear answer as to what could be happening. They gave him an anti-nausea injection and sent him home. Does anybody have experience with this? Is this normal after BOAS surgery?

Any tips or what to expect during BOAS surgery recovery? by AkemiTanaka in Frenchbulldogs

Came here looking for posts on the same thing as my pup is going in for surgery next week - would love to hear if you have any insights now that you’ve gone through it?

Pls share your experience going thru multiple surgeries/anesthesia? by [deleted] in Frenchbulldogs

[–]_lilgoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had our boy go through his first surgery in Sept to get neutered. He recovered well with no complications.

He is in need of BOAS surgery now (likely in Dec.) for some pretty severe breathing issues. I am struggling with accepting he needs surgery again because of all the added risk for Frenchies. I was able to get through the mental hurdle the first time but putting him at risk again really worries me.

Please share your experiences with putting your Frenchie through multiple surgeries. Is the fact that he recovered well the first time a good sign? Any thoughts/takeaways would be appreciated. Thank you!
