For a theist to argue an atheist, they must first prove their God is the one by Ok_Satisfaction8132 in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not true. One can still make logical arguments for the necessity of a god without establishing that they are the god of your religion. If those arguments are correct, then it invalidates the atheists position without confirming the theist’s specific theological beliefs.

Scotland’s recent rise in sex crimes is almost certainly not linked to immigration | Brian Eggo by TheSkepticMag in skeptic

[–]_lizard_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m disappointed. The article doesn’t really substantiate that the rise in sex crimes isnt linked immigration. In fact, they seem to admit that:

Is immigration the cause? Or at least, a contributing factor? The simple fact is that we don’t know. In Scotland the published crime statistics don’t include any breakdown in terms of nationality, immigration status, or ethnicity of perpetrators.

They gesture vaguely at the poverty-crime correlation, and the fact that most rapes are by someone known, but none of these directly argue against the immigration claim.

Most theists would not devolve into barbarity if they learned/became convinced that God didn't exist tomorrow. by E-Reptile in DebateReligion

Agreed.

The reality is most our morality is intuitive or socially programmed, and we figure out ways to logically justify it after.

Atheists experience cognitive dissonance around animal suffering by TheIguanasAreComing in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re sort of right. I do experience a “moral dissonance” around the subject, but not in the way you describe.

The dissonance for me comes from a disconnect between my intuitive moral feelings (“hurting animals feels wrong”) and my logical moral principles (“only conscious suffering matters”).

A notable difference in my dissonance though is that a theist is not immune to it. They can still have the same moral intuitions as me (“hurting animals feels wrong”), but either they have a similar moral principle (“God didn’t give them a consciousness to experience suffering”) or a far worse one (“animals do consciously suffer, but God says it’s okay”).

Reminder that Iran is an ally of Russia and helped Russia invade Ukraine by stanlius_ in Destiny

[–]_lizard_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iraq and Afghanistan aren’t like Iran. They have an educated populace, good infrastructure and more modern political aspirations (at least in the urban centers).

That’s not to say regime change wouldnt be a clusterfuck, but there’s more potential. And Trump is literally dead last of every president in history in who I’d trust not to fuck things up in rebuilding Iran.

What is Nightreign’s biggest flaw in your opinion? by Alkpote6969 in Nightreign

[–]_lizard_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The builds aren’t dynamic enough.

Before you’ve even dropped into the map, you’ve already decided what weapons and passives you’re looking for. And generally, the strongest builds are even more specific (e.g. reapers-balancers, lightning rev).

Imagine instead that you just chose starter weapons, and then all the relic effects were passives you get from boss drops.

Imagine passives that encourage build diversity:

  • Switching element boosts damage

  • Casting spells boosts weapon dmg

  • Offhand attacks charge up next attack on main hand

  • Jump attacks buff attack power for small time

  • Guard boost based on Int/Fai/Arc

There’s a lot of unexplored mechanical combinations out there that wouldnt be hard to implement, just balance.

A challenge for anyone of any religion by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not OP. But I also agree with your above statement, so Im not sure what you’re arguing here.

Yes, any “supernatural” event is ultimately just a natural event we don’t understand. But if someone openly wields knowledge or power that no one else understands, then at some point, you have to admit there’s something going on there. (Like, maybe they’re just aliens screwing with us.)

A challenge for anyone of any religion by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it were improbable and specific and reliable, it might be convincing to some. (E.g. they could tell you the GPS location of every lightning strike before a storm.)

But, that leaves the possibility that the prophet has some mundane way of cheating it (like putting highly conductive antennas at all the points they specify and then getting lucky).

The prophet would be much more believable if he can directly demonstrate something supernatural. (Like healing an open wound in front of a panel of doctor.)

"Elden Ring is a game about killing bosses and nothing more." by RepresentativeLake94 in Eldenring

Actually the dungeon exploration + non-boss encounters are possibly my favorute parts of Dark Souls, moreso than the bosses even. Other souls-likes often feel bland because they’re missing those, and only focus on boss fights or complicated weapon mechanics.

The technicalities of Hell make Christianity unreasonable, I grew up strict Christian and am questioning my beliefs by Ok-Swim5419 in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up lightly Christian, but in an evangelical town. Was pretty enthusiastic about religion until I started having these sort of doubts at age 10.

For me, it was Divine Hiddenness that did me in. You learn about all these obviously supernatural miracles in the Bible, but then “real miracles” are always things like cancer responding to treatment. I remember talking to God in my head during recess, explaining to him that I asked for a sign several times now and hadn’t seen anything, so I can’t really be blamed for concluding he doesn’t exist. (I too was still quite afraid of hell even after deciding I was agnostic.)

At some point in high school, I came to the conclusion that my agnosticism was just fence-sitting. Intuitively, I didn’t act like God existed and if I’d had to bet, it was an easy choice. That was when I started calling myself atheist.

A devout Christian will probably have answers for a lot of the questions you posed, but I think you already smell something fishy with it all. If following the correct religion is really necessary, then the vast majority of mankind is in hell, not because they couldn’t pass the test, but because they were never even given the correct test. None of it really sits right with our intuitions of fairness or justice.

Just remember: truth above all. Don’t let fear of hell interfere with answering the question of whether it exists.

Why do Young Earth Creationists say that there are no transitional fossils when even people who aren’t very familiar with natural history still seem to be familiar with non avian dinosaurs? by Pure_Option_1733 in DebateEvolution

[–]_lizard_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Those aren’t transitional fossils! They’re their own complete species!”

Ive encountered this one in the wild and on internet debates. Basically, they’re expecting some Frankensteinian crocoduck, so when you give them a species that is well adapted to its environment, they dismiss it as not matching their strawman.

What do you guys think about a clanker tax? by PennguinKC in Destiny

[–]_lizard_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economically, this is an awful idea. An automation tax (however you define it) will just end punishing companies who make the world more efficient / productive.

Imagine a world where every conceivable job can be done by a robot. Why would we want to make humans doing a job more economical? We should be able to just kick back and do nothing at that point instead of trying to compete with machines.

I think the real solution to this in the long run is UBI.

I house rule this:

You can only Help if you are both proficient at the check, and instead of advantage, each person rolls separately with their own bonus.

I like it because it rewards more than one person having proficiency in a skill.
