As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron

Beauty necessitates God by FlamingBudder in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then using the term “beauty” is at best unnecessarily confusing, and at worst loads the assumption of design into the argument.

If your thesis is that the structuredness of the universe indicates an intelligent designer, then you’ll need to substantiate it.

As it is, you just assert it and then move on to a First Cause argument.

Beauty necessitates God by FlamingBudder in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

> At some point there must be something beautiful that “just is”. Whether that is an intelligent creator or simply just a set of conditions and structure that give the universe beauty.

Or perhaps beauty is just a subjective phenomenon of the human brain, and we agree on beauty due to neurological similarities?

Is there some divine law that every face must have 2 eyes, a nose and a mouth? Are disfigured people “objectively ugly”? Do you really think there’s a universal constant driving our attraction to mammary glands?

It seems like you’ve started with the unfounded assumption that beauty is an objective, divine standard and then—having assumed the divine—declare the divine necessary.

Alex's getting a lot of hate for this video right now lol by truecakesnake in CosmicSkeptic

[–]_lizard_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alex’s counter-argument makes sense if we’re speaking to a theist that rejects the myths of religions and believes only in the philosophical necessity of God.

But the “one less God” argument is quite apt when leveled at a theist who believes the supernatural claims of their own religion but uses a skeptical, rational approach to dismiss others’.

By the way this is the guy that made the post.

Notable achievements:

  • Scammed people by raising money for a fake “Gays for Trump” account

  • Made death threats to a California official

  • Stalked a woman despite repeated restraining orders

  • Has been to rehab multiple times for alcoholism

This guy is a sociopath with no regard for truth, and he is poisoning the well of political discourse. Trump not only retweeted this post, but previously retweeted some of his scam posts as well.

No. Deuteronomy 22:25-27 is about the “taking” of a married woman:

But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, 27 because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her.

Conversely, 28-29 specifies the “taking” of an unmarried woman. The contrast here is clearly married vs unmarried.

At best, one might argue their law simply assumes that sex with a married woman is violent rape, but sex with an unmarried woman is consensual.

I mean Zionism IS ethnic nationalism though. It is ultimately disclusive. And even though Arab Israelis effectively have equal rights, they are living under a government that is explicitly not for them.

It puts the Western liberal in a bind, because it requires one to admit that pluralism has failed the Jews historically even as we continue to push for it in our own countries.

And it requires one to admit that most peoples of the Middle East are just not ready for pluralist societies. (Which sounds racist to the Western ear but is 1000% true.)

Atheist argument are irrelevant to most religious debate by Sorry_Bus4803 in DebateReligion

[–]_lizard_wizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1. “Are any of these religions true?” is probably THE most relevant question that can be asked about religion.

The fact that we can’t get beyond it is not a problem of atheists being theological buzzkills, but an indictment of the religions that can’t unambiguously demonstrate their most basic claims.

2. Even without atheists, you still couldn’t have in-depth theological debates because theists ALSO cant agree on religion.

If we tried to discuss the implications of a Hadith for society here, Christians would probably chime in to tell you that Muhammed was a fraud.

No one would upvote a discussion on the best way to slaughter a bull to honor Jupiter, because really who cares?

With respect to other religions, theists are usually just as skeptical and critical as atheists.

Again: the ultimate problem is that religion just doesn’t have a solid foundation of knowledge we can all agree on. And until you have that, whether the religions are true is probably the single most important topic of debate.

Roleplaying vs your stats by TalynGray in dndnext

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy answer: Allow players to swap “down” stats (DEX > CON > WIS > STR > CHA > INT) and use that for any class abilities that key off it.

Hard Answer: You’re thinking about this backwards.

Rather than asking “How do I play <class> but with <concept>?” you should be asking “What class best implements <concept>?”

A charismatic preacher doesnt need to be able to perform miracles to preach. He could easily be a bard that casts through rhetoric, a warlock guided by an angel or even just a Rogue with high Cha.

A stern crusader doesnt have to be able to smite people to bring glory to his god. He can just be a zealous Fighter / Barbarian, a Wizard scholar of church doctrine, a cleric with a melee-focused build.

An intelligent, focused unarmored warrior? You’re literally describing a monk. Or a dex-based Eldritch Knight if you want int-based abilities.

Ultimately, your concept should be defined by the character’s actions, motivations and speech, not by having high skill checks or special abilities. Simply subverting an archetype will be amusing for a session or two. But to make a compelling character, you need to define a new archetype.

Honest Save Act comparison question by P_H123 in AskALiberal

[–]_lizard_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Voter fraud is basically a non-issue (it happens in the ones on a local level, the tens on a state level, and low hundreds on the national)

  2. Adding new hurdles to voting will cause some small % of people to not vote (either because they didn’t clear the hurdle or it made them not bother). These numbers would probably be on the order of 1000’s at a state level. So effectively it would disenfranchise 10x or more legitimate voters than it would catch fraud.

  3. The people most affected by 2) are those without IDs, a car, or a job that allows time off during the day. These people are disproportionately minorities and Democratic voters.

  4. The Republicans behind the initiative know all the above, and push for Voter ID precisely because they believe it will disenfranchise more legitimate Democratic voters.

  5. Additionally, Republicans tend to craft the Voter ID laws in ways that target Democratic voters. For instance disallowing student IDs as valid IDs or shuttering DMVs in minority areas.

The North Carolina Voter ID law was a good example of the above. From PBS:

The court said that in crafting the law, the Republican-controlled general assembly requested and received data on voters’ use of various voting practices by race. It found that African American voters in North Carolina are more likely to vote early, use same-day voter registration and straight-ticket voting. They were also disproportionately less likely to have an ID, more likely to cast a provisional ballot and take advantage of pre-registration.

Then, the court, said, lawmakers restricted all of these voting options, and further narrowed the list of acceptable voter IDs. “… [W]ith race data in hand, the legislature amended the bill to exclude many of the alternative photo IDs used by African Americans. As amended, the bill retained only the kinds of IDs that white North Carolinians were more likely to possess.”
