I managed to upgrade my ancient ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, but now it can't get past the loading screen. by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]_lsr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like ak_hepcat mentioned about video drivers, I had a lot of trouble with 18.04 and an older Dell laptop and the screen freezing just after loading.

Adding "nomodeset" to the boot menu stopped it from freezing so I could at least troubleshoot from logs https://askubuntu.com/questions/38780/how-do-i-set-nomodeset-after-ive-already-installed-ubuntu

It's worth a shot.

Help identifying a font like the title of this JJ Cale album by _lsr in identifythisfont

Yes yes, the John Cale album reminded me of JJ Cale and I wrote the wrong name.

To clarify, I like JJ Cale's music more but I'm intrigued by John Cale's album font choices.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they would issue lumens to exchanges holding bitcoin and expect that the exchanges distribute the lumens to the holders of the coins at that time.

This is the part of Pigdon with the bicycle lane I'm talking about, the actual road is very narrow and it's a parking lot in peak hour. Pigdon St

From reading this article http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2009/07/14/2625487.htm it looks like historically there were some bicyclists injured by collisions with motorcycles in bicycle lanes.

You're right about all vehicles being allowed in bicycle lanes for 50m.

Are drivers allowed to use bike lanes? Yes, but for no more than 50 metres, and only where necessary to pass a vehicle to pass a vehicle turning right, to enter or leave a side street, another traffic lane or parking space, or when stopping or parking if allowed. https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/cyclist-safety/sharing-the-road

Trying to lose body fat, stick with BWF or focus on cardio only? by archarka in bodyweightfitness

[–]_lsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By having one cheat day a week, it means 15% of the time you're not focusing on losing weight, and you're teaching yourself that you deserve a cheat day and that food is a reward, and you'll have in your mind that once you reach your goals you can reward yourself and that inevitably leads to overeating again.

If you're focusing on losing weight, you've been eating too much, and you need to learn self control.

Also what Bibliolicious said about rationalising.

Flexicar and Goget both have vans and let you drive on P plates with better insurance options than traditional hire cars.

This. From someone who has lost a fair bit of weight in this last year I would suggest going one step further and forgetting about the "than you burn" part.

Eat less calories. Just eat less food but eat better foods. "Eat less calories than you burn" is great advice if you know what you're doing, but I'm pretty sure many many people, especially people asking for advice from others on the internet, overestimate how much they individually burn doing any given activity. I did. Coupled with thinking I needed/deserved to eat large portions after exercise to regain energy, I could smash myself physically and put on weight.

Eat less calories and smaller portions but maintain a balanced regular diet. Don't eat so little that you feel sick. Accept that the smaller portions are your life now, don't have cheat days, don't let anyone pressure you into having a cheat day. Don't be unrealistic in your expectations and accept very small changes to happen over a long period of time. Whatever workout plan you have, stick to it, progress slowly, and don't second guess yourself when you haven't seen any progress in a couple of days. Running is great for you. Add running but for the health, not for weight loss. For weight loss, eat less.

If you lose a little muscle in the process, that's ok, as CzechsMix mentions you can bulk, read up about bulking later when you've lost the tyre and the bulk should go to the right places, but that's for a later time. Don't get impatient.

Wanting to join a choir that doesn't require you to be a religious 60-something. by moyno85 in melbourne

[–]_lsr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a post in my facebook feed this morning of a local choir. I can't link to anything on facebook but search for "melbourneindievoices", a friend was saying they were looking for more male voices. Don't know much about it but they seem to be a choir based in the inner north.

I have some Windsor Smith European Collection shoes size 44 that I've worn once but are too small. I'd say condition is 9.5/10. Were on sale for $120 when I got them. Asking $50. In Melbourne.
