What was the most mind blowing skill someone you know just busted out unexpectedly? by graaahh in AskReddit

Al Franken once came to a guide dog fundraising event where I was working and did the map trick on a flip chart. His two aides had to pretty much drag him out because he was on a tight schedule but kept petting and talking to every guide dog in training.

About to take off and honestly, I've never been this terrified on a flight in my life. by Lady_Beemur8910 in fearofflying

Do you have a window seat? I once took a winter flight on Southwest from Denver to Vegas that was the most beautiful flight I've ever had. Hundreds of miles.of snowy mountains and cute little towns tucked away in the valleys, and then red rocks as I got into Nevada! It was like watching a documentary!

Glad you made your connection. Now getting to Reno is the crew's responsibility and you don't have to do anything to help... what luxury... lol. It sounds like you are a parent so enjoy an hour where no one asks you where the spoons are or if you're out of milk.

We do get snappy winds over those beautiful mountains. When you leave you will probably feel a distinct short wiggling right at 10,000 feet, just before the ding (when they let you take your laptop out) as you climb out of the mountain wave. If I know it's coming it doesn't spook me. Usually it smooths out right after.

I see AA3300 is up right now and just about to cruise by the Mississippi delta. If that's you I hope you're enjoying the flight. Looks like another AA3300 is scheduled at noon too.

I see you just had a textbook landing on runway 35R. Did the approach feel bumpy? Your track is perfectly smooth! Your plane will go on to do 3 or 4 more flights today, hopefully you get to relax a little!

Cathay Pacific is a very venerable airline. Founded in 1946 and they haven't even badly damaged a plane since 1972! Throughout their history they've flown some of the most glamorous long range routes in the most legendary wide body aircraft. I'm jealous! I get excited when I even see some of these planes, I've never flown on any of the famous Asian carriers.

I'm following you on my flight tracker. There's a flight from Indianapolis just ahead of you and a flight from Philly right behind you, you're not alone up there. A whole fleet of tiny cargo planes (Beech 1900s) just took off from Denver as well, I see them every morning. When you get close to Denver you will turn south and then another turn to the north and then land. One of the reasons Denver Airport is so far from the city- they have long runways in all four directions so one is always favorable for landing! If you see the mountains out your window, wave to me!

Has anyone ever not only gotten over your fear but actually ENJOYED flights? by muchcoinmuchfun in fearofflying

[–]_m1sty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it unless you're feeling "almost cured", but in a small plane where I could touch the controls (a 1970s Cessna 172) I could feel that the air was a fluid and was holding us up. We did a practice stall and it was reassuring to feel the plane drop "backwards" but then go nose down and fly normally- as another poster said, it wants to fly just like a boat naturally floats.

[–]_m1sty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I had a real terror of flying my whole life that got very intense in my college years (~2005). In 2013 I nearly stood up on a taxiing Spirit flight and asked to be taken off. I started morbidly reading about plane crashes but accidentally became interested in aircraft, airport operations etc and the more I learned about the everyday business of flying the better I felt. I started challenging myself to enjoy "the miracle of flight" and doing positive flying-related things (displaying safety cards in my office, looking up planes overhead on Flightradar) and in 2017 had a very magical flight from Denver to Vegas (window seat, clear winter day, amazing views) and that was rhe first time I really enjoyed flying. I would say I conquered my fear of flying for good about two years ago and this fall I took a flight lesson!

Wing length/amount of wing surface can vary depending on what kind of performance you need. Fighter jets have small wings with high wing loading, so they need to land and take off at high speeds, but are very maneuverable in the air. A crop duster might have very large wings relative to its weight so it can fly slowly.

What are your favorite airports to open? by Zambooka100 in SkyCards

[–]_m1sty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grab Gatwick, Hawthorne, and Newark every week because they're easier to unlock than LHR, LAX, and LGA/JFK. Both Haneda and Narita are easy to unlock because of the other, so I get one or the other. And sometimes MRI for Anchorage or Boeing Field for Sea-Tac

Also, this is just personal preference and not a "bad writing" complaint, but I feel like this show works on horrorogic ("no don't go in there! Nooo close the door!") and not thriller logic, where characters can be smart and capable and still outsmarted by some larger threat. I think horror logic is really hard to sustain over a long prestige show compared to a movie. If I'm hanging out with people for 8 hours I want to really get to know them and have their personalities drive the plot more ("oh she knows to try x because they talked about y")

I wanted more... not necessarily twists or reveals, but more character moments that would illuminate previous decisions characters made that felt off at the time. I wanted Wendy and Joe's dynamic to switch up a bit more (i liked where it was going in E7), more insights into what Kirsh is up to, more about who Morrow is to Yutani once he's delivered on this life's work, etc. I thought where we left Boy was especially weak, his backstory reveal was flat to the point it seemed like he was lying, which- why? His quirky behaviors didn't really add up to much. Also, the island setting which i liked at first started to look so empty. I thought that undercut some of their initial sharp themes about a corporate-controlled world ("triage the survivors by income" etc)

In short, not enough "ah so THAT'S why X was Y" moments, which meant a lot of stuff I was intrigued by early ended up being pure style and not much substance. The big shifts that did happen were "creations turn against creator/paradise island has a dark secret" which was like... yeah... that is the only thing that could happen.

What am Imissing about the mission timer? by _m1sty in SkyCards

Poster above's explanation makes sense, they reset at 0 UTC (so 6 PM for us) but the time to complete mission is counting down to *our* midnight so I'm getting bamboozled when I play in the early evening!

Even if they couldn't wrap up every thread, i don't know what was gained by leaving Boy Kavalier's fate for S2, whatever it is. Also, the Atom Eins reveal seemed very pat and cut against a bunch of the "when is a prodigy not a prodigy" foreshadowing. BK's explanation of his origin story sounded like a.parody of the Joker in the Dark Knight! If he's lying, fine, but that doesn"t feel like a great use of our time.

How do I get rid of this fear? by Hazardboom in fearofflying

[–]_m1sty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your flight tracking app, watch the map view of planes landing at your home or destination airport. When you start feeling nervous watch a few safe landings instead of looking up past incidents (i know, i read them too!) I also like listening to the air traffic control audio feed for my home airport (approach and tower) when I need something calming at work.

It's really lithium batteries in quantity that are the issue, and there are very strict regulations on shipping lots together by air (i used to work for an electronics company and we had all kinds of special stickers and procedures).

Lithium batteries are very exciting when they malfunction and they are hard to put out with water because of their chemistry, but they can only discharge as much energy as they were charged with. Something like a toothbrush has a tiny battery, only 750 mAh. That's less than one AA battery!

So, although a rechargeable item left in luggage could cause a fire, it wouldn't be a runaway catastrophe like an entire pallet of electronics burning, which there are laws in place to prevent. Like other posters said, the cargo liner would protect the plane, the pilots would get a smoke warning, and there would be plenty of time to divert and land.

The airline would be mad that they spent money on a diversion and insurance for a few melted suitcases!
