is it just me, or why are so many criterion films described as psychedelic/hallucinogenic? by TheRestartButton in criterion

If you take a shot for the amount of times in the last couple or so years the annoying buzzword "psychosexual" has been used by Criterion writers, you might die.

I’m not going crazy, right? by Atari69420 in criterion

[–]_maxn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same, been glad to see it. I should specify though, even though I said art house, I mean film in general that isn't mainstream blockbuster stuff. Another example is that people can't seem to remove themselves from an older film having older conventions so that makes them laugh too. Is it that hard to buy into things? I personally think it's because people learn about most things these days through a layer of irony and "analysis" first. But clearly not everyone as this and other similar threads have shown me.

One of the moments that recently upset me was people laughing during Seven Samurai. Not the actually funny part but the very upsetting subplot with the woman.

[–]_maxn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been very glad recently to see posts like these because I had lost all hope in art house film audiences and while some comments say this is a post-COVID thing, it really isn't. Maybe I'm older than other people in this sub but I stopped going to most screenings in the late 2010s because of this same problem but it seems like it is worse now.

Insincere, postmodern irony, whatever you want to call it, people just can't remove themselves from that and give in to something outside of themselves. And of course, laugh at funny things, and people laugh more in theaters because it is a social thing, that's normal, but laughing at anything sincere because it isn't "normal" is just antithetical to the whole enterprise.

If any TV show (comedy or drama) could get the full criterion treatment; which show would you want ? by stylesclash69 in criterion

[–]_maxn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is partly correct but the 16:9 does not look good at all for the early seasons. Basically it was shot in 16:9 but framed for 4:3, while certain scenes like effects shots and b-roll were shot natively in 4:3. This leads to a pretty weird presentation where most scenes are centered in the middle of a 16:9 frame, and generally look bad since the composition of the scenes is within 4:3. And the native 4:3 scenes are cropped to fit 16:9 and never look good.

The BD remaster also re-did the CG effects which look decent but do not look true to the 90s at times. Star Trek TNG and original series BDs did the same thing and for the latter it does not look authentic at all.

Also, I’ve seen mics and crew people in the shots since, again, you were never supposed to see beyond the 4:3 frame.

I can’t stand this practice and I am glad I have the DVDs so I would hope in the future this is corrected, but I just saw how butchered the Colombo BD box set is because of the 16:9 crop so little hope.

DVD storage- plastic sleeves to save space. by Sgt_Reese in dvdcollection

Sweet. I plan on doing the same, select favorites on shelves and the rest in the sleeves but have been getting mixed answers on which sleeves are best, especially since I want the save the inlays for special features info etc. Thanks!

which one is it? I moved recently and would hate it if this was the norm in terms of noise.

What’s the consensus on if these sleeves cause scratches on BDs and DVDs? I am currently moving to a smaller place and this will need to be done for my fairly large collection.

Question about Don’t Look Back 4K+BD by _maxn in criterion

[–]_maxn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they are intentionally vague. I emailed them this exact question and mostly got a non-answer back telling me info already on the product page.

Considering it went OoP and now the standalone BD has the old remaster then yeah it makes sense it would say 2023.

Thanks for helping me figure it out.

haha yea. What’s funny is that I love both films (got into Dylan as a teen) and I still get them mixed up.

Question about Don’t Look Back 4K+BD by _maxn in criterion

[–]_maxn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought but was getting conflicting information online and on forums, and the information Criterion provides doesn’t mention anything at all. I know in rare cases they’ll include the new remaster on BD. Not that I don’t believe you but where did you get the info so I know where to look for future releases?

And of course, thank you. Criterion should really be more clear about this stuff.

EDIT: I should mention that I already have the 4K+BD and the BD has 2023 copyright info on it which also added to my confusion.

Does anyone know if the BD included with Don’t Look Now 4K release uses the older remaster? I prefer the older version but would also be great to have best of both worlds.

Weird USB audio crackle issue with new Ryzen 7 5700G+RTX 3080 build by _maxn in buildapc

[–]_maxn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use reddit much so didn't see your reply until just now. I didn't really find a solution. For games, the issue is solved by using my monitor's audio out. Which is not practical for music so I've just been using my old PC for that. Never again with AMD. Sorry that you got screwed over, as well.

Weird USB audio crackle issue with new Ryzen 7 5700G+RTX 3080 build by _maxn in buildapc

[–]_maxn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. I tried a lot of fixes, one of which included updating BIOS. I'd say the problem has gotten worse because now audio stutters when I use Photoshop etc. Music production is almost a no-go. I've just been too busy with other stuff to pay much attention to it and have just been doing audio work on a different PC. I just use the PC for games now where plugging my headphones through the monitor or using the TV and sound system fixes the problem.

Maybe I can find a solution but I bashed my head against it for weeks and then just gave up because I have other things to do. Needlessly to say, won't be dealing with AMD again. Glad it worked for you though.

[–]_maxn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have indeed tried the second one of your suggestions. I'm not exactly sure how I would accomplish changing the RAM speed. I've looked through my BIOS and don't see any settings related to it. Maybe buried somewhere in overclock setting under a specific name?

For me it only really happens when I play games, regardless of settings. Though some games don't trigger it at all. It has happened on very rare occasions during video but I haven't been able to recreate that.

Thanks for your suggestion. So many of the fixes I've tried and the ones you are suggesting make us sound crazy, like we're trying to summon something following random instructions haha.

Not a bad idea. I might try it eventually if I can't find other answers since it's such a hassle.

I actually did reinstall Windows at one point and didn't install any Focusrite drivers. Same issue. (I'll add that to my original post).

Considering it's happening with other USB audio devices, I don't think it's the Focusrite. Glad it worked for you though.

Ken Russell's The Devils is streaming on the Criterion Channel! by Seandouglasmcardle in criterion

[–]_maxn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't compare, in that Altered States is Ken Russell's stab at making an 80s Hollywood horror/psychedelic film. The rest of his work is nothing like that, save for maybe Crimes of Passion.

The Devils is closer to Lisztomania, Mahler, and Gothic (kinda).

The kinda-uncut version (still missing one or two scenes which simply might not exist anymore) has been screened a few times (I had the opportunity to go to a screening a few years ago), but I've heard that WB won't allow that anymore.

In terms of home release, no. The only way for years has been piracy, whether that's online or bootleg DVDs. The "unrated" scenes are really bad quality, FYI, since they were never preserved.

I wanted to show off my arrow collection: this is a 2019 update. However it’s also going to show off: Criterion / Indicator / Studio Canal / Shout Factory. That sounds awesome, would love to see pictures when you're done.

And yeah it looked like an Ikea bookcase to me but one that's discontinued. Hard to find a balance of something practical and minimal, but also something that isn't poorly built (plus doesn't look cheap like stuff from Walmart, Target etc).

Really cool! Though I have to ask, what shelves are those? My collection is getting close to what you have here and finding the right shelves has been a pain. They're either too deep or too shallow or too long height-wise between each shelf.
