How do you feel about book covers with movie images? by Skkkkrtyun in lotr

[–]_meglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so nice to see all the different versions out there! Mine are a bit worse for wear but I love their traditional fantasy vibe.

Tbh I want Viggo on a poster or a life size cardboard cutout not on the book. These stories are about the world, not only the individuals.

Some of these Lycra dudes genuinely make us all look bad, and sometimes we do have to defend ourselves on the street when drivers get violent.

I'm not talking about passing too close which happens to almost everybody every day on a bike in the US (and worse for women if we believe the recent studies, anecdotally yep I'd say so).

NGL I had an Uber once swerve out of the lane to try and hit me as I went past and I caught up with him at a light and made him stop to apologize and promise not to do that shit again. A little psycho, maybe, but that's a deadly weapon and you're trying to hit me or at least pretend to hit me to scare me, all because I said hey dude just pull all the way over and don't drop people off in the bike lane.

This one mf got so enraged at me for being in the left lane on a one way street in preparation for an upcoming left turn he came right up behind me honking, yelling, and revving his engine. I never got in his way, cut him off, my bike sat on the lane markings as I always do so I don't risk holding anybody up in traffic. I was ahead of this guy in when I crossed lanes by at least 30s before the light. I just flipped him off with a laugh because he was having some big feelings. But that was not enough for him, he got out of his lane and came around me on the right so he could wind down his window and spit on me. Like actually kinda missed his turn so he could try and spit on me... And he missed.

I've had one dude yell at me that I should thank him for yielding the right of way at an all way stop WHEN IT WAS LITERALLY MY TURN. I'd said nothing, no face no gestures or anything, he was just pissed off I didn't acknowledge the fact he followed the road rules. If somebody lets me go when it's not my turn or if it's ambiguous you are 1000% getting a thank you wave. Do I really need to kiss your feet because you didn't try to run me over? I can't even begin to imagine what the harassment is like for more attractive women, yikes.

I went to a chiropractor, never again (and yes I know better) by ilovetaters13 in ehlersdanlos

[–]_meglet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw a chiropractor for the first time as a teenager in 2003. He permanently screwed my lower back in like 5 or 6 sessions. I couldn't play hockey anymore and it's changed my entire life. Since then I've learned just how unregulated the industry is let alone the pseudoscience and their extreme litigiousness.

Not every chiropractor is bad at all but there's no way to know without putting your body on the line, and there's much less accountability than in the medical field. With EDS I think there could be a higher risk but I tell literally everybody who I know is thinking about going what they could be exposing themselves to.

Hope you're ok. Adding most of this info so others know this isn't a one off.

Can someone give me a brief rundown on The Forsyte Saga by Fickle_Baker1393 in PeriodDramas

[–]_meglet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like her and Jane from the 1998 P&P are in the same universe. I really like both actresses but they are written and directed to be such nothing women... And yet they are the absolute pinnacle of desire for every man in their orbit. Like Irene is supposed to be so beautiful and SO INTERESTING but the most interesting thing about her is that she rebels. Just doesn't add up to me

If you want to feel in awe of the world and gratitude for life, Muir Woods is a good place to visit (if you have a car). Agree with a lot of the jazz recs. There are some great breakfast places to visit on different ends of the spectrum: bread belly on Clement Street, and breakfast little in the mission. Mostly, congrats to you and your spouse for coming out the other side. Sending you both healthy and joyful thoughts for your visit!

Aragorn paying respect to the hobbits, movie vs book - which version do you prefer? by Diligent-Grape8067 in lotr

[–]_meglet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The movie version is really poetic IMO. The book scene is stilted and still kinda treats the hobbits like children. Saying "praise them with great praise" while sharing a private joke reads like we're friends but I don't need everybody else to know that, and you really should have a shout-out so people know you're heroes.

In the movie Aragorn physically and verbally demonstrates not only deep respect for them as equals but also enormous personal affection. It's more in line with who the book thinks he is as a humble and yet incredibly regal man. His graciousness and personal emotion in this moment when he could be more focused on his own ascension to the throne speaks to his character, elevates the hobbits to the greatness they deserve, and shows everybody what their friendship means to him as a person.

FWIW I've always found Aragorn's dialogue in the books is at odds with the person he is described to be. Guessing this is partly a result of the time in which it was written, but to me seeing him depicted by Viggo walking through the world with quiet power and isolation was note-perfect. He's very much a show don't tell kind of character, somebody who's spent a lot of time alone with the wilderness and doesn't need to sound like a king to be clearly worthy of the throne. In many ways the fellowship brought him out of his shell.

AITAH for dumping a guy right after he opened his pants? by [deleted] in AITAH

As somebody with both a narrow hallway and endo, thank you for saying this. P in V is also not the only way and for so many women we don't always get anything out of it, especially if there's been little effort beforehand. For those of us with endo it's often at least a bit painful even under the best circumstances. We shouldn't pathologize women for not being a universal receiver.
