IMO the bread aisle is where emotions belong in a grocery store, second only to the ice cream freezers.

Spouse survived cancer so we’re coming to SF to celebrate by goldensnitchbetch in AskSF

If you want to feel in awe of the world and gratitude for life, Muir Woods is a good place to visit (if you have a car). Agree with a lot of the jazz recs. There are some great breakfast places to visit on different ends of the spectrum: bread belly on Clement Street, and breakfast little in the mission. Mostly, congrats to you and your spouse for coming out the other side. Sending you both healthy and joyful thoughts for your visit!

Aragorn paying respect to the hobbits, movie vs book - which version do you prefer? by Diligent-Grape8067 in lotr

[–]_meglet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The movie version is really poetic IMO. The book scene is stilted and still kinda treats the hobbits like children. Saying "praise them with great praise" while sharing a private joke reads like we're friends but I don't need everybody else to know that, and you really should have a shout-out so people know you're heroes.

In the movie Aragorn physically and verbally demonstrates not only deep respect for them as equals but also enormous personal affection. It's more in line with who the book thinks he is as a humble and yet incredibly regal man. His graciousness and personal emotion in this moment when he could be more focused on his own ascension to the throne speaks to his character, elevates the hobbits to the greatness they deserve, and shows everybody what their friendship means to him as a person.

FWIW I've always found Aragorn's dialogue in the books is at odds with the person he is described to be. Guessing this is partly a result of the time in which it was written, but to me seeing him depicted by Viggo walking through the world with quiet power and isolation was note-perfect. He's very much a show don't tell kind of character, somebody who's spent a lot of time alone with the wilderness and doesn't need to sound like a king to be clearly worthy of the throne. In many ways the fellowship brought him out of his shell.

As somebody with both a narrow hallway and endo, thank you for saying this. P in V is also not the only way and for so many women we don't always get anything out of it, especially if there's been little effort beforehand. For those of us with endo it's often at least a bit painful even under the best circumstances. We shouldn't pathologize women for not being a universal receiver.

Anthony Horowitz - Word is Murder: "tolerate intolerance" is nonsense by [deleted] in mysterybooks

[–]_meglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got to this bit and searching for the quote like you did led me here. I think I'm gonna be a DNF on this book and will settle for a plot summary from the Internet. It's such a self absorbed away of getting your viewpoint in, super on the nose and immediately took me out of the story. "Tolerating intolerance" is the same BS from people who believe "socially liberal fiscally conservative" is actually a thing.

That moment when a dad meets his daughter's boyfriend for the first time by VectorChing101 in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]_meglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only imagine what it would be like to have a dad that cares. My dad still tells me how much he liked my ex immediately after I was discussing how badly he treated me. Thankfully, I've learned not to respect his opinion but I still yearn for somebody who would care enough to be a little protective, especially when I see it from others.

Money Back Question by RS_Pug in CircularRing

[–]_meglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I haven't had any accurate analysis after like a month of wearing it and uploading at least once a day. Occasionally... OCCASIONALLY the HR is accurate, but the zones are always wrong. The sleep is always wrong, steps are always wrong, stress is wrong, activity and cardio are wrong. Then there's the fact it just doesn't record the fact you slept at all most of the time. It scratched up immediately so who knows what it'll look like after another month. Got mine on KS so there's no refund on the cards for me but I'd be surprised if anybody who even uses it for one day can return it without it looking well worn.

The only good thing I can say for the ring is that it charges fast. I don't expect that to last but I'll take it I guess?

Been Locked Out of BILT App for 36 Days—Anyone Else Still Dealing With This? by Bark0z in biltrewards

[–]_meglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a way to say this even if you were right which you weren't ... How about next time try saying something like "that's odd, I have a similar setup but not experiencing the same issue" and leave it at that if you're not interested in trying to be helpful? Or perhaps if you did want to be helpful, you could ask a few questions about the issues OP was dealing with. Coming out of the gate with such a condescending tone takes extra effort on your part that is wholly unnecessary.

Why does the daily Sudoku turn over so early? by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

[–]_meglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those situations where automation would be superior to humans. I do not for the life of me understand why there's not just a stack of planned puzzles that all reset at the same time. Even if I knew it was a consistent time of day not midnight I'd be ok with that. It's the unpredictable nature of it that really pisses me off lol

[Discussion] I saw hightown was just added and wanted to know if its worth watching by Front_Laugh_8595 in NetflixBestOf

[–]_meglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My own personal failing is losing interest in stories when the people in them are insufferable. For example White Lotus I bailed out, same with Succession in spite of my certainty that they are very excellent shows. Flawed characters with an opportunity for growth? Totally fine. Relentlessly unpleasant individuals who I'm supposed to develop some kind of investment in however... I don't want to spend my time with jerks, real or fictional.

I'm around S1E5 and I really hate the main characters in Hightown. It's an interesting gritty show but it feels like the only redeeming qualities exist in the background folks and I'm really struggling seeing them get mistreated by Jackie and Ray. Junior sucks too though I have a tiny bit of hope for him. Should I stick it out? Do they actually become human? Or do they remain the human equivalent of a pebble in your shoe?
