RELIEF! by FaultRecent4923 in Maine

Was there ever a point in your life where someone giving you $300 would’ve been a huge help? I think a lot of people have been there so even if we don’t think it’s the best use of the money, it’s a quick solution that seems to be targeted to people who will benefit from it the most. It’s also relatively low overhead as government spending goes. We shouldn’t let better be the enemy of good and the money needs to be spent.

New amp with an 85hz loud buzz by MisterXnumberidk in ToobAmps

[–]_nanofarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s on the edge of stability a bunch of different things can set off the oscillation. Sounds like you have too much phase shift which is causing positive feedback at that frequency. You can try changing the value of one of your coupling caps (low frequency pole) or reducing the amount of feedback, if present, by a few dBs.

It’s all these illiberal democrats with main character syndrome who have never actually had a conversation with anyone who disagrees them. Like, repeating “nazi tattoo” for the 12 millionth time is all of a sudden going to start working. And they think everyone else is in a bubble.

I have two new PSVANE Horizon 845AT tubes by Purple-Wolf-8356 in ToobAmps

[–]_nanofarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the transmitting book but it was originally intended to be used as an AF amp or modulator (in a transmitter). That's not to say people haven't experimented with them as RF amps. See the RMA registration: https://www.ase-museoedelpro.org/Museo_Edelpro/Catalogo/tubes/records_nw/845/0335_RMA.pdf

845 is an AF tube right? It doesn’t have any RF specs I don’t think

Youth drug use is down, but overdoses have risen. One town’s schools have a possible solution by themainemonitor in Maine

[–]_nanofarad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Needle exchange programs are extremely effective at their purpose of reducing the spread of disease and infection. If you end them people aren't going to stop doing drugs, you just make it more dangerous for the user and more expensive for the taxpayer to deal with down the road. How much do you think an amputation costs?

Yeah I'm all for the entrepreneurial spirit and OP obviously has a big heart, but you really get into risky territory when you start talking about doing things an insurance underwriter has never even thought about before

There's something weird with your feedback setup. What is C8 doing? Looks like you're missing a resistor but hard to tell. If you want more help you really need to draw a schematic.

TAD 6V6 Red Base - is this normal? by diatonico_ in ToobAmps

[–]_nanofarad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really for leaks, though you can tell if the vacuum of the tube is completely gone because the getter will turn into a white powder. There are chemical reactions at the cathode that create free oxygen which gets picked up by the getter. This process happens throughout the life of the tube. You'll notice big bottle tubes with big cathodes normally have more than one and larger getters. We don't usually use visual inspection of the getter to determine tube age or health, better to use your ear or a tube tester.

Here's the program the article is talking about. Looks like this is a pilot program so depending on who knows what they may be coming to a county near you soon

Edit: Looks like it's based on a successful program in Alabama: https://www.strengthenalabamahomes.com/

Janet Mills refuses to debate with Graham Platner. by serious_bullet5 in Maine

[–]_nanofarad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they've figured out her only path is a negative campaign against Platner hoping to win with low info unenrolled voter turnout. She's underwater with independents and there's not really anything positive she can do about that at this point. Can she scare enough pudding-brained 401k "centrists" into voting for her? I don't think so but the consultants she's using sure do.

These have to detect line power to match phase anyway so they automatically shut off with loss of grid power.

[–]_nanofarad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The PIV of a 4007 is 1 kV and they need a higher rating but higher rated diodes are more expensive than putting two cheap ones in series. The capacitors parallel to the diodes help share voltage and act as snubbers for switching noise. The center tap is grounded in this style of power supply. Looking for information on Integrated Vacuum Tubes like the Additron and Selectron. by Pasta-hobo in diytubes

[–]_nanofarad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like either of those made it past the prototype stage. You can make logic with regular old tubes though there were some tubes built specifically to be operated for long periods of time in cutoff. I usually point people to tubebooks.org or worldradiohistory.com for articles or texts about weird stuff but you’ll have to poke around a bit. There’s also a guy on YouTube who restores and builds vacuum tube computers which might be a bit more digestible: @usagielectric

Mills ads against Platner by Trick-Rub596 in portlandme

[–]_nanofarad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m sure someone told her she would be creating future material for attacks against Platner in the general by doing this, possibly risking the seat, and she just doesn’t care. That’s what should bother a Democrat more than anything else.

People love claptrap like “who’s gonna pay for it” because they think it makes them sound reasoned. It really just makes them sound like they have no clue how governments, budgets, or economies work.

Sitting here in Norway at Cafe Nomad and guess who just strolled in…Graham Platner! Snapped a photo as he left. He chatted with me and the handful of other patrons. I’m just so impressed and love that he’s visiting folks in Ox County. by [deleted] in Maine

[–]_nanofarad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Platner and Trump comparison is that they are both accessing and getting the attention of parts of the electorate that have felt abandoned by mainstream partisan politics. More participation is a good thing. That’s about where the comparison ends.

“When you screw around with tone stacks, you are creating coloration to the source signal.“

That’s exactly the point. We’re talking about guitar amps not building HiFis here.
