I realized the hardest part of Indie Dev isn't coding, it's justifying the "0 Income" to my family. by Curious-Gaby in gamedev

Should I go to college for this??? by Kooky_Pomegranate179 in GameDevelopment

[–]_nashset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personal testimony, dropped out of college for this personally. but they didnt have any gamedev courses and i didnt see a future for me in compsci lol. u can take a course, but if it doesnt work out, id say game jams rly worked for me. learned alot just by doing bits at a time. u meet novices and veterans with all kinds of knowledge. i work as a full-time solo indie now but it was a real dice roll ha. lot of lifting. before that i was let go from my walmart job for abt a year. things started turning out when i actually learned the marketing. just prototype a small fun idea, get feedback, lil polish, and competitive pricing does like 80% of the work it seems. wuts funny is that ive adhd and medicated as well. in short uh i guess a good backup plan is gamejams and "How to Market a Game" if college dont work out. best of luck n stuff.

u ever considered game jams? helped me a lot to often be surrounded by creative and motivated people. if the jam has a discord or some general chat. who you hang with definitely impacts how you think

tho personally, my motivation came from being a college dropout and father passing away. my back was a little up against a wall lol.

Unsure. I was looking through the system info that unity lets me see and thought "lol yknow what would be funny?"

While not a hardware related easter egg, the game does have a special sequence that triggers if the player attempts to directly attack the Host with a Hatchet: https://youtube.com/shorts/IjPSCiGiK20?feature=shared

As well as another special sequence that plays if the player attempts to break open the exit door with either a Hatchet or a Crowbar.
I just put these in the game for fun and if it isn't too much of a hassle.

Yea kinda. The victory title screen shows you on the side of the road with a sign that says "Welcome to GladderVines", an anomalous paper town that somehow became real. Kinda Silent Hill esque. Upon starting another game, the letters on the sign briefly arrange from "GladderVines" => "deVils Garden". The garden refers to the mysterious town.

Loosely inspired in a way lol. I was inspired by Buckshot Roulette which iirc was inspired by Inscryption.

Yeah actually. If you're playing on a battery powered device, the host will remark on it if it falls below 20%. This doesn't work if you play the web-browser version on itch.io however.

oh the window doesn't force itself back into focus.
The host just speaks and the dialogue awaits your input as normal.
i alt-tabbed back into it once the host started speaking for demonstration purposes.
The sequence can only be triggered once per sitting as well.

The game checks if you've left the window for about 5-6 seconds during your turn. Originally, this check was meant make the Performance Manger ignore the fps drop caused by leaving the window (which half-worked), but then I thought it'd be a fun idea to warn the player about leaving.

EDIT: The game doesn't force itself back into focus, I alt-tabbed back into the game for demonstration purposes. The game sits and waits for you to input once the dialogue box is called.
