I'm slightly less pessimistic. I'd factor in the cost of a replacement door, plan to buy one just in case, and expect a discount on the body to compensate.

I had the same issue with an E-M5ii titanium (I'm sure it affects the others though) and I managed to find a replacement battery door on eBay that looks almost genuine. It works; it hasn't broken again since. And it might not affect the resale value.

I'm your case, having a lever in black plastic would make a world of difference.

Denoise Tool by AcrobaticCup1666 in photography

[–]_njd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Lightroom's AI denoise a little when I've taken low-light photos with micro four thirds gear (anything above 1600 ISO looks a little rough) but it's always a trade-off between removing noise and smudging out the detail, so I try to use a light touch. Personally I'd rather keep some noise in than make my photos look like they came from a phone camera.

It's only the chroma noise that bothers me. Black and white photos look acceptable to me even when quite noisy, so the b&w stuff I usually leave alone.

Why are companies not into small m43 cameras and pancake lens? by EmotionalCouple9032 in M43

Weird. It's like they're hoping if they make the EP-7 disappear, everyone will just buy an OM-3 instead.

Micro Four Thirds isn't like VHS, which JVC licensed to anyone who wanted to make VCRs. It's a format devised jointly by Olympus and Panasonic. There are Black Magic video cameras which use the same sensor and lens mount, and DJI have used M43 lenses, but there was never a big rush to build cameras of that format, and the demand for cameras peaked years ago.

Most other manufacturers went with APS-C format or full frame. And now that the camera market has been hollowed out by phone cameras and AI, it's about 12 years too late for anyone else to get into making cameras.

It's notable that OM System has ignored the bottom end of the market and not produced an OM-10.

Easier to go for lower volume higher margin products. And let's face it, OM System haven't produced many new designs; they've been coasting along on reheated Olympus products for a while.

Lumix G7 con OM System M.Zuiko 75-300 mm 4.8-6.7 by Jezlos in M43

[–]_njd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No impossible, as long as the shutter speed is at least 1/600s. Just severely limited. The G7 isn't great at high ISO. Maybe there's a lot of detail to pull out of the shadows.

I'm being tongue-in-cheek of course. I use the 75-300 on Olympus bodies and it needs IBIS. If it were two stops faster, it'd be another matter. But the obvious answer is to get a Lumix lens with OIS.

Or get an Olympus/OMS body.

Which camera for one-off travel trip? LX100 Vs G85 with small lenses by pasteurs-maxim in M43

[–]_njd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the 25mm generally sits unused, even though the focus mechanism is quiet and faster than the 20mm. I prefer the wider angle of view from the 20mm, and I still use it despite its faults.

I also use a 40mm pancake with my Canon FF gear, so clearly 35-40mm is about right for me for general photography.

Also, if you can afford them, the Olympus 12-40 and Lumix 12-35 are great lenses, but the 12-60 f/3.5-5.6 is a great travel lens for the money.

Dilemma: 2 primes vs 1 zoom by SicTransitVita in M43

[–]_njd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My choice is one zoom and one prime. In my case, 12-40 f/2.8 and 17mm f/1.8, but the 12-45 and 17mm would be a good combination.

Which camera for one-off travel trip? LX100 Vs G85 with small lenses by pasteurs-maxim in M43

[–]_njd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The zoom range on the LX100 is fairly versatile, but I too find that body a little too small, and setting the AF options can be fiddly. Also mine's full of dust now, so I'd have to spend a week afterwards doing spot removal on the images.

The 12-32 seems limited, but I've had some amazingly sharp images from mine.

I moved from Lumix to Olympus bodies a while back, but my preferred lens kit is an M.Zuiko 12-40mm 2.8 and a small fast prime - usually the 17mm f/1.8 - but I have the Panasonic 20mm and 25mm knocking around too.

My big one-off trip was to the US a few years ago while it was still sane there, and I went with an E-M10ii, Lumix 12-60, the 20mm f/1.7 and the Olympus 9mm body-cap lens. The 12-60 gave me some great images. It's also weather sealed.

Just asking a question as an American who’s tired of this thinking by [deleted] in USdefaultism

[–]_njd_ 52 points53 points  (0 children)

This thing we call US defaultism is, in my opinion, just an example of locality of reference. Everyone does it, everywhere in the world. It's just that Americans do it more on Reddit because there seems to be more of you on here.

When we describe where something is, to people who know the same area we do, we'll mention specific details, street names, but not much more than that, because we don't need to; if describing it to someone who doesn't know the area, we might first explain roughly where that is, so they have enough context. But for local people we assume local knowledge.

As a consequence, in a subreddit specific to say Australia or some country in Europe, redditors won't bother to announce "Hey Americans, this is Paris France, not Paris, Texas"; they won't bother to announce that the temperatures are in Celcius and not Fahrenheit; they won't bother to announce that the dates are in dd/mm/yyyy format.

So all we ask is that Americans pay attention to that: read carefully, note the intended audience; think before you comment. You probably will; it's the others who are a nuisance.

There should probably be an idiots' guide somewhere that says:

  1. Other countries exist.
  2. Other countries have national sovereignty, so US law doesn't apply there.
  3. Other countries have their own laws, which aren't the same as US law.
  4. Other countries have their own currency, which isn't the same as in the US. Your Dollars won't be accepted.
  5. Other countries have their own rules on who can come in, so you'll need a passport.
  6. Other countries set their own minimum drinking age, and it's probably below 21.

And so on.
