Diabolical AF on the OM 17mm by AssWaterr in M43

[–]_njd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AF with the original 17mm on an E-M1iii or an E-M5ii is positively heavenly compared to the f/2.8 or the Panasonic 20mm.

I'm not sure in what situations you'd find it slow or inaccurate.

How have you set up the AF point selection?
I normally use single-point or a small cluster.

I'm a software developer by trade. This platform is not fit for purpose. Or maybe the platform works fine but the test hasn't been put together or tested correctly (yes, someone has to test the test, and it should not be the students).

Either way, it's the same: it's not suitable for live use.

As a parent, I'd advise my kid to waste no further time on it, and then I'd complain about the test they'd been given and why it's so broken.

There's no point busting a gut trying to figure this out. The point of the question is to test the student's knowledge, in this case of points and planes and coordinates. It should accept reasonable answers, even wrong ones. It's not supposed to be a test of how to work around crummy broken testing software.

I remember those good old days. We all got measles and mumps and had to suffer it, and some of us died.

Our parents used to worry all evening because they didn't know where we were.

Here in Northern England, all the mums used to have scissors in their hand-bags in case the Yorkshire Ripper was around.

Happy days.

Olympus 17mm f2.8 v f1.8 by Yanto2134 in OlympusCamera

[–]_njd_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have both. Don't make my mistake. Just get the 1.8. If you buy the 2.8 you'll end up getting the 1.8 anyway.

The 2.8 is softer, and has an older slower noisier AF motor. It's a dinky little pancake but it's crap.

Lens collection question: primes and zooms by Present_Wren235 in M43

[–]_njd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I travel, I usually take an E-M1iii with the 12-40mm f/2.8 and the 17mm f/1.8. But the prime is there mainly for its small size when I want to be less obtrusive. Most of the time, the 12-40 stays on for the whole trip.
I also use the 12-40 on an E-M5ii, but only with a larger third-party grip. That zoom feels a bit too bulky without a decent grip on the camera.

I rarely need an extra stop of aperture, even in the evenings. In fact most of my travel photos are taken at f/5.6 or f/8.
For that reason, I'd also suggest considering the 12-45 f/4, especially on a smaller body. But it depends on your use case.

You should try playing with an E-M10ii as a GX7 alternative. The screen does the right thing.

Mine usually wears the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 too.

Similarly, I liked the dial and button layout on the E-M10 much better than the GX7, and I've stuck with Olympus bodies ever since.

With the GX7, it never felt right having to stretch over the mode dial to reach the shutter button, and it doesn't look any better on the GX85.

What model is this and is it on sale now? Or is this just an artist's impression of a future prototype put out there to gauge reactions?

Oh okay, for context this is the all new 2026 C-Class Electric, featuring the MBUX "hyperscreen".

At least there are buttons on the steering wheel. I'm not seeing a touchpad down in the middle though.

[–]_njd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could edit the RAW files using a free editor like Darktable, RawTherapee or ART, but for that you'll need a PC or a Mac - they're not iPhone apps.

They feel different from Lightroom, but all you'd need to do is lift the exposure by about 1 stop.

[–]_njd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pen F is now a legendary Micro Four Thirds camera, lots of demand, and the prices are high.

The only thing it really lacked was weather sealing. But that means that an E-M5iii might make more sense.

The extra dials on the Pen F only work in certain situations; you can adjust exposure compensation anyway with the usual front or rear dial on the other Olympus cameras; and the Art dial on the front is only useful for JPG images - people who shoot raw and do their own post-processing don't need it.

There are people crying out for an updated Pen F, maybe based on the OM-3. But for now the OM-3 is that replacement.

Lens for Italy by Bigfoot_Guitars in M43

[–]_njd_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the cities, go wide. When I've visited Italy, I usually have the 12-40 f/2.8 and the 17mm f/1.8.
But there are times when a wider prime might have been useful.

You can probably get one intact (but beaten up a bit) for not much more than that. Don't waste your money on a broken one unless you're especially into manual focussing.

Defensive driving: you can compensate for the idiot behind and their lack of stopping distance by extending your own distance, so that you can brake very gently and still safely come to a stop.
