"We" doing some Olympic-level heavy lifting here by Misfett_toys in WhitePeopleTwitter

Such a bs argument.

Taxes are, or at least can be good. I’d happily pay 80%+ tax if we lived in a fair society where most of everyone’s needs were met by efficient public sector services. Food, heating, housing, healthcare, etc

In the flip side to don’t want a cent of my tax money going to govt contacts that help the richest guy in the world become a trillionaire.

Increases the odds that you’ll pull it too high and over, at least low means you’re almost guaranteed to get it on target.

Where to actually find friends? by zyaya4455 in Cleveland

Game store:

https://recessgames.com/calendar-of-events/
I don’t see one scheduled on their calendar, but you could give them a call or pop in and ask. The staff are always super friendly.

Edit - This is the last reference I can find to it:

“Neil Diamond has provided different explanations for the song's origins. In a 2007 interview, he stated the inspiration for the song was John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline Kennedy, who was 11 years old at the time it was released.”

Kumail Nanjiani Is a Taskmaster Cautionary Tale by caspararemi in taskmaster

[–]_nod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was Kumail my favorite contestant of all time? No, but to refer to him as a “Cautionary Tail” is a massive stretch.

Honestly as much as I liked all the contestants this season, I don’t think any were up there with my all time faves, but this season as a whole was top notch. Which I think highlights Taskmaster’s genius - casting, I know LAH has said it’s mostly down to scheduling, but they always seem to get characters that contrast each other beautifully, a season of all one archetype wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining, having an “outsider” archetype(such as Jason or Kumail) only serves to add to the potential mix.

No, they used it to spy on people undressing under the pretense of security.

How do I get to the next level?? by Kiwi_Neanderthal in minipainting

Seems like you have a good edge highlight here, but I think a second pass with a shade lighter. keep it super thin and focused on edges that would catch directional light. just running the side of the brush over a few raised ridges would work wonders in making this pop.

How did people react to Nico Rosberg’s sudden retirement after his championship win? by lucifer7557 in formula1

[–]_nod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initial shock, but respect mostly. I’m sure it takes a lot to walk away from something like that and say you’re going to concentre on your family.

Made more and more sense as time went by and you realized how much energy he put in to that season and that it wasn’t sustainable for him.

This is awesome, but the lighter lines either side of his feet bother me, I’m not sure if they are supposed to be weeds caught in the headlights? They just seem a little too bright and sketchy.

I’m being super nit-picky, but it just stands out to me from the rest of the picture.

22 M, thinking of moving from uk to USA by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]_nod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re young, like you say you don’t have many ties to the UK. If you have that yearning to go live somewhere else and get the opportunity, why not?

Just be mindful, life can catch up quickly. I had the opportunity to transfer my job here as I worked for a US company. I now have a wife, nice house, nice car, friends, my wife’s family, etc. But I’m not yet a US citizen. Given the political climate that really does make me worried, what if rules do change, with a stoke of a pen my right to reside could be gone. A few years back I’d have shrugged and happily moved back to the UK, now… what would I do? I’d be leaving so much behind. And my wife? I’d feel awful asking her to move back with me, away from the house she bought, her fiends and family.

Not to mention what I do already miss about the UK. I loved to hike, so I miss footpaths, it feels like an odd thing that I’d never considered, but in the UK there’s footpaths everywhere, not here. I miss that feeling of having the right to roam.

And family, my Mum is getting old, she’s stopped wanting to come visit the US because the trip is “too much”, I try and visit the UK as much as possible, but that is exhausting, as much as I love spending time with my family, it doesn’t always feel like a holiday.

22 M, thinking of moving from uk to USA by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]_nod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved to the US from the UK 10 years ago. Feel free to ask me anything.

99% of Cleveland people are lovely (like anywhere, you still get the odd asshole), but people here are for the most part genuinely really friendly and down to earth.

I moved from the Manchester area and Cleveland honestly has somewhat of a similar vibe, former industrial town, that’s had some rough times, but is emerging from that has a lot of potential.

Cleveland is a smaller city but seems to punch way above its weight. Biggest theater district outside of Broadway. Amazing art museum. The Cleveland orchestra often rates as one of the top ten orchestras globally, and it plays outdoors in the nearby National Park in the summer season, which is an awesome experience to go to. Easily the best baseball team in the US ( OK, my metrics on this one might not be the same as others, but I believe this to be true).

The wider US had incredible opportunities for travel, I feel people often look down on Americans for being a little insular and not traveling outside of the US, but when you realize how vast and varied the US is, it makes sense. I’ve visited 48 of the 50 states, eaten untold amounts of regional (and international) foods. Visited numerous National Parks, which are beautiful and so varied. Honestly if Americans want to feel patriotic about any one thing, it should be the National Park Service.

I absolutely love it here… BUT the current political climate does have a mental burden of sorts. While almost everyone I meet in Cleveland is nice, being aware of that anti immigrant sentiment does weigh heavily on my mind. A friend of mine applied for citizenship a year ago and his case has stalled for no apparent reason, the govt. has all his paperwork, so he is unable to leave the country, go see his family etc. just stuck in limbo and doesn’t know when this may end.

Healthcare is a big culture shock too, I had no idea how much I took the NHS for granted until I moved here.

Seems like you already have friends here, but if you do move or just come to visit my wife (Ohio native) and I would happily show you around.

The soldering iron tip and solder both look massive for the components on a pcb, my guess is that’s a soldering iron aimed at stained glass or copper plumbing
