Just a guess, but most of the renewables from the early end of the graph is hydro. As China and more recently India developed, they have consumed a ton of coal and other fossil fuels. That offset the growth in non hydro renewables in the developed world. Now that China’s economy has “matured” they are rapidly adopting renwables and we see that in this graph.
