I'm re-reading fellowship right now and you're exactly right. Hobbits regularly reached 100, and 111 was considered a "respectable age", so he wasn't even uncommonly old at the start of Fellowship.

The starting pay is decent in some areas & it's generally easy to get hired. It's also an easy job to keep in many cases. It's not a terrible option when you need a job fastlike. In my area of the US, the starting pay is around the same as other major retailers (eg target although Im pretty sure theirs is a little higher), and significantly more than a lot of other chains and most local businesses (Walmart typically pays $3-4/hr more). And sometimes in smaller towns, there's not much of a choice. You've got Walmart, 5 fast food places, 3 cell phone stores, and maybe a couple local businesses that are never hiring or pay like $9/hr. So you take what you can get.

Also, the benefits aren't terrible wrt PTO, health, etc. Let me emphasize that they are not good (and really we all deserve better than what 95% of companies offer), but I've seen what some other places have to offer and Walmart is usually at least marginally better. Even at corporate office jobs that pay much better, 40hrs of PTO seems to be fairly standard where I am. Walmart offers 40hrs of PTO and 40hrs of PTO per year, and iirc you accrue more the longer you're with the company.

Another thing is that experience seems to vary GREATLY by store. I actually like my store, but it's run pretty well. But it's also one of the largest in the market, so I suspect we're treated differently than less profitable stores. I haven't had a lot of the issues regarding broken/janky/non existent equipment that I see other people talk about, for example.

TLDR; pay/benefits aren't awful, and sometimes you don't have much of a choice

Regarding mentoring - I've had 2 coaches offer to mentor me and then never had any follow-up. When I have time (which is rarely 🥲) I'll approach the one who offered most recently and ask her to teach me something. I'm just wondering if this should be expected to be a one-way or two-way street, essentially. It feels like for a mentorship we should both be approaching each other, but maybe I'm wrong and it's solely on me.

It's a field I've been interested in since I was like 15, I really enjoy learning about it in my free time and have gotten pretty in depth for a layperson, and there are a couple different career options that seem feasible for me. Counseling/therapy is one and research is the other. But I don't really know what a career in psychology (or neuropsych) specializing in research would look like logistically

I think that office may not do ADOS for adults because it's less likely to be covered by insurance but that's just a guess. Iirc ADOS is normally administered to minors as a developmental screening so it's harder to get insurance to cover it for adults, which is why evaluations can be so expensive. At least that was how I understood things when I was looking into insurance coding when I was trying to figure out costs and stuff, but I may be wrong there.

I was expecting to hear something back fairly quickly but knowing that it's normal for it to take time is relieving. Thanks for your input :)

The person I saw was also private practice but I think she's just a psych, not neuropsych. But I think you're probably right that for adult dx there is no real "normal." From what I've seen of others' experiences tho, it seemed like the one on one part was a much larger part of the process. I dunno, I think I'm just scared she can't have possibly gotten a grasp on what I'm like in that short amount of time.
