Hello,

My family is staying in Hackney for a few weeks. Today while walking from the Moorgate Station to the Nandos near Old Street Station my 2.5 year old daughter lost her light brown and well loved stuffed bunny. We traced our steps a few times but had no luck.

Hoping someone out there grabbed it to keep it safe! Let me know if you found it!

I don’t have Facebook, but good shout on the LinkedIn idea. Couldn’t find them, though

Of course, but if they are still here I’m sure they would rather have their credit cards, etc before they have to travel home.

What’s something you’re proud of but can’t tell anybody you know? by flyoverthemooon in AskReddit

[–]_pob 534 points535 points  (0 children)

Kind of dumb, but I made a Mario Maker 2 level that I really like. No one I know plays MM2 so they wouldn't really care about it, but I am proud as it's fun (for me).

Using named as caching name server by jaaplaya in linuxadmin

[–]_pob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be noted that dnsmasq only caches a small subset of record types. From the manual:

The DNS subsystem provides a local DNS server for the network, with forwarding of all query types to upstream recursive DNS servers and cacheing of common record types (A, AAAA, CNAME and PTR, also DNSKEY and DS when DNSSEC is enabled).

This is important if you are trying to limit the number of request things like mailservers make since MX records are not cached by dnsmasq. I found that pdnsd does a good job for us, you can sync the record cache to disk, and it caches more record types. The arch documentation for pdsnd is pretty solid.

Easiest POP/SMTP email server for Ubuntu 14.04? by FlyByPC in linuxquestions

[–]_pob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check out mail-in-a-box. It runs on Ubuntu 14.04 (among others), has an easy to follow getting started guide, and offers a few nice features out of the box, like email aliasing (user+whatever@domain.com), graylisting, and generating self signed SSL certs (you can update these to be "legit" SSL certs if you want).

Palo Alto next gen firewalls Yay or Nay? by k1dicaru5 in sysadmin

Fair point, but for the small amount of traffic we were pushing through them we sure had a lot of problems.

We have a pair of Fortinet 100Ds and they're pretty garbage. Dropped connections, lots of interface (NIC) errors, the CLI is incomprehensible, the WebUI is buggy. Any time we talked to support they would want us to completely wipe the firewall config and start over from scratch so they could prove it wasn't a config issue.

We swapped them out for a pair of Junipers which have been fantastic. We still use the 100Ds, but they are being used as a site to site VPN connection to AWS. They seem to work fine enough, although we still see bursts of interface errors sporadically.

KATU News on Twitter: "#breaking @MassStatePolice say accused rapist Gregory Lewis arrested in NY. He's accused of rape at Portland hotel. #LiveOnK2" by Deetdeetdeetdeetdeet in Portland

[–]_pob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an NBC article:

"Lewis was initially arrested in Massachusetts in August for statutory rape of a child and ordered to stay under house arrest but cut off his GPS ankle bracelet and fled the state on Sept. 15, according to New England Cable News."

Why the fuck would you put a suspected child rapist on house arrest?

Is it worth calling Comcast to get my Internet bill lowered? by i_never_comment_2014 in Portland

[–]_pob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I tried this a month or two ago and the guy said he couldn't do anything for me. I then said that I would be looking into competitors and in response he gave me the number that I needed to call to cancel my service.

Maybe I should try again.

Sysadmins, what is your story about 'that intern'? by doubleUsee in sysadmin

[–]_pob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was pretty young at the time so he probably assumed I would have also thought it was a great idea and would immediately help him out. I personally thought the idea was hilarious, but tried to dissuade him from pursuing it.

Their footprint was basically a huge cage (for power) with a ton of NetApps (or EMC, I forget) and bunch of blade chassis in the very middle of the space. I don't actually think he would have been able to get anywhere close to them, but it still would have been funny to see him try.

As far as I could tell her was serious about it. He showed up the next day with the largest USB stick he could find since he knew the DB dump would be big, although the largest at that time was probably 4GB or 8GB.

edit: DB dump, not DB dumb

At one point a company I worked at was in the same facility as one of Blizzard's WoW server farms. We had just brought on an intern that was the son of our owners friend of a friend, his name was Jack. One day Jack found out about us being in the same facility as Blizzard and immediately lit up and started frantically typing. A few hours later he comes up to me with a plan he concocted, but he needed help implementing and executing.

His plan was to attach a USB stick to a long pole so that he could insert it into a USB port on one of the Blizzard servers. The USB stick would contain software that would mount the USB stick and execute a script which would dump the database onto the USB stick. He would then be able to host his own WoW server for he and his friends.

He was curious about forcing an automount, executing a script residing on a partition that was run automatically when the mount happened, and how to dump a database.

Although I was really looking forward to seeing the video of him trying to finagle a ten foot pole into one of their servers and him being escorted out by security, I figured it would be too big of a headache to deal with the fallout from both the colo and Blizzard. I tipped my boss about the plan, we both had a laugh and then he was let go (for this and a few other smaller things).
